Robbie Fulks - 4 albums

tracker : piratebay
size : 214,6
files : 61 MP3/country

Robbie Fulks is cleverly twisted, deliciously irreverent, and one of the best of the new country singer/songwriters. Musically, Country Love Songs supplies plenty of hardcore, bottle-tippin', honky tonk country, with a '50s production that sounds like it's supposed to be there. Fulks writes and sings country music that bears little or no resemblance to what dominates the airwaves; rather, his material harks back to an era when humor and dark subject matter shared the same page of a writer's composition book. Paying homage to the classic Bakersfield sound, with former Buckeroo Tom Brumley shining on pedal steel, Fulks delivers "The Buck Starts Here," which just might be the best country song since "He Stopped Loving Her Today." Lyrically, Fulks can travel some pretty spooky highways, as in the descriptive ballad "Barely Human," a drinking song that's as tortured as they get, with the song's character "barely human from twilight till dawn." Other strong tracks include the saga of an aging movie starlet who loses it in "She Took a Lot of Pills (And Died)" -- which first appeared on the second volume of the label's Insurgent Country compilations -- and the swingin' "Every Kind of Music But Country."

Country Love Songs-1996/- 01 - Every Kind of Music But Country 2.13 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 02 - Rock Bottom, Pop. 1 3.06 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 03 - The Buck Starts Here 5.13 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 04 - (I Love) Nickels And Dimes 3.58 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 05 - Barely Human 4.33 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 06 - I'd Be Lonesome 3.19 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 07 - She Took A Lot Of Pills (And Died) 3.52 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 08 - We'll Burn Together 3.28 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 09 - Let's Live Together 3.46 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 10 - The Scrapple Song 3.16 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 11 - Pete Way's Trousers 2.96 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 12 - Tears Only Run One Way 3.24 MiB
Country Love Songs-1996/- 13 - Papa Was A Steel-Headed Man 3.96 MiB

Robbie Fulks seems to have developed something of a love/hate relationship with country music. It's not so much that Fulks doesn't like the stuff anymore (quite the opposite), but his albums Let's Kill Saturday Night and Couples in Trouble have made it clear his interests has been moving into other areas, but while Couples in Trouble was the strongest and most ambitious album of his career to date, it didn't sell very well, and its wide palate of rock and pop sounds puzzled many fans who were hoping for more tunes like, say, "She Took a Lot of Pills (And Died)." Fulks has headed back into country territory with Georgia Hard, his first album for Yep Roc (and his first set not recorded on his own dime since his ill-fated affiliation with Geffen), which is informed by his love of countrypolitan songwriting in the manner of Bill Anderson, Shel Silverstein and Roger Miller. While this album certainly plays to Fulks' strengths, it also suggests that he's chafing a bit at its self-imposed boundaries; there are songs here that have "country hit" written all over them, especially "Where There's a Road," "I Never Did Like Planes," "If They Could Only See Me Now," and the excellent title cut. However, there are a few that edge uncomfortably towards parody in their pursuit of the twang, such as "All You Can Cheat" and "Goodbye, Cruel Girl," while "I'm Gonna Take You Home (And Make You Like Me)" and "Countrier Than Thou" are so snarky they shoot the album's balance square in the foot (the latter seems specifically designed to alienate whatever fans he has who weren't annoyed by "Roots Rock Weirdos"). Georgia Hard leaves no doubt that Robbie Fulks is as good a country songwriter as anyone working today, but bits of it clearly suggest he'd rather be doing other things, and it's a shame he hasn't been able to balance the broader vision of Couples in Trouble with the richer and more human outlook depicted in this disc's high points.

Georgia Hard-2005/01 - Where There's A Road 5.42 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/02 - It's Always Raining Somewhere 4.58 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/03 - Leave It To A Loser 4.83 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/04 - Georgia Hard 5.89 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/05 - I'm Gonna Take You Home (And Make You Like Me) 4.22 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/06 - Coldwater, Tennessee 7.24 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/07 - All You Can Cheat 3.96 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/08 - Countrier Than Thou 4.75 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/09 - If They Could Only See Me Now 6.15 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/10 - I Never Did Like Planes 4.85 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/11 - Each Night I Try 4.42 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/12 - Doin' Right (For All The Wrong Reasons) 6.11 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/13 - You Don't Want What I Have 7.92 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/14 - Right On Redd 4.87 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/15 - Goodbye, Cruel Girl 4.45 MiB
Georgia Hard-2005/Cover front.jpg 43.44 KiB
Georgia Hard-2005/Folder.jpg 7.49 KiB

Fulks uses a backing musician cavalcade on each track in this exploration of "the dark side of country music." Not strictly downbeat, there is plenty of humor here, too ("I Told Her Lies," etc.). Especially noteworthy are the steel guitar players (Steve Byam and Buck Owens' Tom Brumley) and the solid bass guitar from Lou Whitney of the Skeletons. These arrangements, bolstered by a mob of electric and acoustic guitarists, make for the salient entertainment on this disc. Fulks is no Hank Williams, in that Fulks can't often hold your attention with merely his material, voice, and guitar. However, the variety on this disc, from ballads like "Forgotten but Not Gone" to real insurgency like "F*ck This Town," and the rich instrumentation make it a fine contribution to alternative country music.

South Mouth-1997/01-Goodbye, Good-Lookin' 3.47 MiB
South Mouth-1997/02-I Told Her Lies 3.25 MiB
South Mouth-1997/03-Heart, I Wish You Were Here 2.82 MiB
South Mouth-1997/04-I Push Right Over 2.66 MiB
South Mouth-1997/05-Cold Statesville Ground 5.4 MiB
South Mouth-1997/06-Forgotten But Not Gone 4.37 MiB
South Mouth-1997/07-Busy Not Crying 3.18 MiB
South Mouth-1997/08-I Was Just Leaving 3.82 MiB
South Mouth-1997/09-What The Lord Hat Wrought (Any Fool Can Knock Down) 3.79 MiB
South Mouth-1997/10-Dirty-Mouthed Flo 2.77 MiB
South Mouth-1997/11-You Wouldn't Do That To Me 3.56 MiB
South Mouth-1997/12-F#ck This Town 2.75 MiB
South Mouth-1997/13-South Richmond Girl 4.94 MiB
South Mouth-1997/folder.jpg 27.23 KiB

Indicative of Robbie Fulks' sly sense of humor, The Very Best of Robbie Fulks is nothing of the sort, but a collection of tracks culled from EPs, promos, limited-release 45s, soundtracks, and various obscure compilations. While much of the material is probably meant to be a little more fun than serious, with Fulks adding humorous self-effacing humor in the liner notes, there is some truly first-rate material here. The very strong country ballad "I Just Want to Meet the Man" and the frantic mock rockabilly of "Roots Rock Weirdoes" make for very entertaining listening. "Parallel Bars," a nice duet with Kelly Willis, and the catchy straightforward rock of "Wedding of the Bugs" also should not be missed. "That Bangle Girl," which Fulks mentions as being a personal favorite, is an absolutely essential piece of sharp country-rock bliss that ranks well with anything he's ever written. While everything here may not always be in the best taste (the rather low-brow "White Man's Bourbon" comes to mind), the material is generally consistent enough for it to be possible that a few first-time listeners could mistake this for an actual greatest-hits collection.

The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/2000/01 - Jean Arthur 2.54 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/02 - Sleepin' On the Job of Love 2.02 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/03 - Roots Rock Weirdoes 3.59 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/04 - May the Best Man Win 2.23 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/05 - Hamilton County Breakdown 2.72 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/06 - Gravid and tgense 502.09 KiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/07 - Parallel Bars (with Kelly Will 2.88 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/08 - Love Ain't Nothin' 2.5 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/09 - I Just Want to Meet the Man 4.04 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/10 - Wedding of the Bugs 1.61 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/11 - You Break It - You Pay 2.22 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/12 - White Man's Bourbon 4.7 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/13 - That Bangle Girl 2.78 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/14 - Jello Goodbye 5.06 MiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/folder.jpg 26.71 KiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/Robbie Fulks - Gravid and Tense 593.45 KiB
The Very Best of Robbie Fulks/Robbie Fulks - Jean Arthur 3.14 MiB
