Invitato a rimanere chiuso in una stanza, Edward intuisce qualcosa di strano finché, spinto dalla curiosità, scopre che il luogo in cui è capitato è un laboratorio di ingegneria genetica diretto dal genetista dottor Moreau e dal suo assistente Montgomery. Al riparo da ogni controllo, i due stanno effettuando esperimenti genetici sugli animali per creare una razza superiore di essere umani. Ma gli esiti sono terribili. I primi uomini-bestia usciti dai laboratori sono intelligenti ma possiedono un forte istinto omicida e la loro sete di sangue è placata solo da sedativi imposti con scosse elettriche. Edward si trova nel mezzo della ribellione che mette gli uomini-bestia contro il dott. Moreau. Ne segue una cruenta resa dei conti, in cui il dottore rimane ucciso, e alcune delle creature costruite rimangono a spadroneggiare sull'isola.
