Volunteers came to fight for a variety of reasons including religious or ethnic loyalties and in some cases for money. As a general rule, Bosnia's Muslims received support from Islamic countries, Serbs from the Eastern Orthodox countries and Croats from the Western Christianity. Arab volunteers came across Croatia into Bosnia to "help the Bosnian Army protect the Bosnian Muslim civilian population". However, the foreign volunteers became unpopular even with many of the Muslim population, because the Bosnian army had thousands of troops and had no need for more soldiers, but for arms. Although Izetbegovi� regarded them as symbolically valuable as a sign of the Muslim world's support for Bosnia, they appear to have made little military difference and became a major political burden. During and after the war, the government of Alija Izetbegovi� nevertheless granted citizenship to at least 700 foreigners who fought in the war. It was only in 2007, after substantial pressure from the United States, that 367 of them were revoked as illegal. These included citizens from Algeria, Egypt, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey.
