Our American friends are observing Memorial Day in honor of those who gave their lives in service to their country. As far as I know, all nationally syndicated talk shows are playing a "best of" show today. A great many of these sacrifices helped promote peace and liberty throughout the entire world. Sorry but the simplest explanation is usually the right one, not crazies with agendas spouting what they've been fed and with their weak intellects. Yes oil is important but the oil producers need to sell it as much as the buyers want to buy it and do as much or more harm to their societies than the buyers do. Nigeria, Venezuela, Russia, SArabia, Iran are prime examples of this, there is no rule of law in any of these countries and the oil profits go to the top and favored. Contrast that with Western oil producer countries, Canada, US(Alaska, but in reality there is plenty of oil here in the continental US if the pols would let us explore and extract it), the Northern Sea fields of the UK. None of these producers are broken societies, Alaskan civilians get around $1500 per year in direct payment from the oil industry. Canada is a wealthy country and the UK as well with no disorder, so that one is bunk.

So it's really not troops that do that, it's the rule of law and binding contracts that do that to ensure that politicians and military leaders don't just take what they want. One of my neighbors is from Nigeria and we have talked extensively about this and he completely agrees that it's only the rule of law that is important in these matters and that is sorely missing in most broken countries including his own.

My best friend is in the military and we have arguments about this all the time. It's just people like Darth Cheney that dodged the war back in the day and now he wants to be all badass and go after the "terrorists". Of course Iraq was a mistake from a purely strategic POV if you say that ****** was a bitter enemy of Iran's and was a nice check on their power, so the US made the wrong decision on that one in terms of their own interests, where is the free oil that all the conspiracy nuts were saying the IW was all about? Chinese, European and other multinational oil corps. are getting as much or more contracts there at present. Of course another longer term idea about the IW is the Fort America of having large numbers of US troops there for stability in the ME and also the idea of preemption before we got another mess like NKorea or Iran, who will both get the bomb and are now entrenched because of it to the detriment of their people living under the boot of the regimes. The Arabs don't want the Persians to get the bomb as much or more than the US or the Israelis.

Most people don't care if sovereign countries get the bomb, the problem is if those countries are willing to sell the technology or even the weapons themselves to freelancers who come up with the ****. Personally it would be much easier to get a warhead and put it in a truck and take it across porous borders than anything they've tried so far.

Moral equivalence is really just the same as trying to heal a cut with a second cut or poring salt into it, 2 wrongs never make a right. It's the same with the affirmative action reverse revenge thus perpetuating what it is supposed to stop, there is a racism industry which has enriched plenty of people like Sharpton, Jackson and others so why would they want it to end?

Gold huh? Most mined gold is located in large countries, Russia, USA, China, not in the "oppressed" countries so I can't see that. Diamonds are in Africa and Russia, and I agree that everyone in the world should not attach the importance to diamonds that we do. Diamonds, like oil, is largely under the control of huge cartels that fix prices and distort markets. De Beers, a Dutch company, is the worlds largest diamond producer and cartel so go after the Dutch if you are against corporations so much. But again the countries in Africa are fully complicit in the exploitation of their people as much as the foreign corps. so saying that one side of a transaction is all to blame is the domain of the weak minded fools that we seem to have in large quantities.

Sorry but I don't live in China, SArabia or other like places so Gitmo is not a possibility. I support Gitmo, usually it's hypocrits who think it's a bad thing. It's a funny thing that most of the "appalled" people about Gitmo don't live in Pakistan, SArabia, Russia, China or any other like country, they live in the free Western ones.

squeaky2000-I was in Saudi Arabia back in '87 running surveillance on the Iran-Iraq war. We knew what was coming in Iraq and the rest of the middle east. Yes, stabilizing the area for oil was part of it, but even more important was the growing threat of radical governments and the threat of terrorism.(Iran, for example). The main problem with "truthers" IS that they can't discern truth from opinion.

Yeah, too many people are severely misinformed about Gitmo or fully propagandized, that's why I limit my intake of Rush and others and don't even bother with NBC/CNN/BBC. News is mostly your choice nowadays, most people watch what they are comfortable with, at least with a paper you can get sources that you can check on, with TV/internet it's shoot from the hip and paraphrase those who back your agenda, infotainment.

Getting back to Gitmo, to equate gitmo with labor camps and such is a severe disservice to many, especially Americans who have done more good for the world than any nation of modern times. Gitmo contains individuals picked up on the field of battle armed, operatives with known intent to harm and top documented leaders of terrorist organizations. No one believes the Mafioso over law enforcement, so why do so many believe and support those people over the armed forces and intelligence services? That's the domain of idiots. See how the people of Southern Italy march and rally against the crime organizations there and how effective the FBI has been with the NY and other American Mafioso's.

Yah that's right, the message is implicitly to take no prisoners on the battlefield for the average GI, although I'm sure it's unsaid at the officer level. And it's too bad really, if we were allowed to use the techniques of the Russians, Chinese, Israelis and probably the French and many other "good" nations, we'd get information out of them that we could then check on and get back to them about. Except that the methods would all be reviewed by layers of independent people and be limited by virtue of that. That information would be much more valuable to the mission than a casualty, it's too bad that political football is being played above security. Of course you can't get the day to day location of anyone on the run but you can get general outlines of plans and regions to look and info on methods used to plan and perpetrate terrorist missions.

Yeah that's a possibility for any sort of justice system, innocents could and sometimes are caught in it. With the Supreme Courts decision last year or the year before to give the detainee the right of Habeus Corpus(challenge detention in a civil court) I don't think we need to worry too much about that. Now torture is completely an opinion, there is no objective definition possible of torture. I have no pity for militants who harm either directly or indirectly. The rights that we are guaranteed by the Constitution are not free, you are making a contract with society to uphold your end, if not you lose those rights. There is no "fairness" in nature, you think the happenings in the universe are "just", silly. These people are loyal to Islamists in Pakistan and elsewhere and we all saw/see what those conditions are like in Taliban/extremist areas.

I suspect the use of any sort of coercion to extract information to save lives will always be a contested subject. Though very effective in some cases, the decentralized enemy we face will adapt in ways that decrease the effectiveness of such techniques (info a person does not have cannot be extracted) and now that the enemy has been given so much free intel, their efficacy is even further compromised. A book I read a while ago made this interesting point on the morality of torture: If we developed a pill that made the recipient lie down for a couple hours and that experience led to them spilling every secret they knew, would we not be tempted to call it a "truth pill". Just something to ponder.

WE ARE AT WAR. They are prisoners of war without the benefit of the Geneva convention. It does not apply to them. Having spent a great deal of time in the military, I am certain that the current detainees vacationing at Gitmo have a good paper trail as to why they are there. Trying to take the moral high ground does not win wars. Just the opposite wins wars. I say again, make no mistake, the military has two purposes to k_i_l_l people and break things. The only people standing in their way are the government bureaucrats who are only interested in getting re-elected.

NTP, I agree with you, you don't do all this sort of thing if someone comes at you with a k****, you do anything to take out your assailant period. More lives have been wasted because pols don't take this view of war, decisive and all methods necessary win wars, not war based on philosophy or political calculation. It's completely lawlessness and uncontrollable mostly so you shouldn't complicate it. Problem is that when you state things clearly like that you elicit indignation and actually hurt the point, as well as make yourself seem like a, well a nuke trigger puller nut, it's too bad but that's the way it is. The left does the same thing but more craftily and is obviously backed by the nuanced partisanship of the largely democratic party member press core.

The truth about the purpose of the military ain't pretty. Neither are bodies torn apart by war. We, as Americans, are insulated by TV censors who do not allow the true horror of war to be seen. The same is true about the written word. Yea, the left would say "nut" without the benefit of experience. So be it. That's the problem with the subject. It is "prettied up" or politicized too often to cover up the truth. I've never been one for discretion.
