Recorded by Sandy Pearlman and Murray Krugman, who were used to producing Blue Oyster Cult, 'Manifest Destiny' has some of that band's early promise, but with less subtlety and more spark, not to mention humour. The opening monologue to 'Disease' is brilliant, but the band have a pop sensibility too. 'Heartache' and 'Hey Boys' are catchy but rock hard. The acceleration in 'Steppin' Out' is exhilarating. They don't take their foot off the pedal, though, and the final track, a live cover of Iggy and the Stooges' 'Search and Destroy' is as explosive as the napalm in the song. It's a pretty straight cover, but I always felt that David Bowie didn't quite get the best out of the sound on this and the other songs he produced on 'Raw Power,' so...
