Of course, when being such a record collector, I've happened to gather a lot of songs that don't really fit into any of the torrents I've uploaded so far. Here's a pick of various good and rare songs that for various reasons haven't found a place in my torrents. Amulet: Vala (1975) Amulet was a rock band from Lahti, they made two LP's in the 1970's: "Caddy By Amulet" (1976) and "Play It" (1977). "Vala" seems to be a single-only track. Amulet performed both in Finnish and English, their best-known song was "Suomen Chicago" (Finland's Chicago), dedicated to their hometown. They made the comeback album "Monet joet ylitän" in 1988 and have shown further activity in recent years. Ari Vaahtera: Haaveet (1981) Kalevala, Bluesounds, Kauko Röyhkä, five solo LP's, producing jobs, a couple of own bands named Ari Vaahtera Band and Poptones... Vaahtera managed to have a long and prosperous career before a serious illness took his life in 2003, at the age of 49. Vaahtera usually played bass, but he mastered the guitar too. "Haaveet" is from his 1981 solo LP "Pitkät jäähyväiset" a nice AOR tune. Belaboris: Rakkauden jälkeen (1984) An all-too rare attempt at a Finnish girl band, although they only sang. The songs and the playing were mainly handled by menfolk. Belaboris' first lineup made a couple of dark synth-pop singles in 1982, a second attempt in 1984 produced this single. Diesel: Love Machine (1982) Guitarist Ile Kallio (Hurriganes) had a band of his own in 1982, but it fizzled after cutting this one and only 7". Exom: Open Your Eyes (1980) Exom has long been an enigmatic band for me. Exom made two self-released singles in 1980, "Disco Lover / Go Back (to Your Reverie)" and "Open Your Eyes / Upside Down". Songs were written by Tom Nyman and T. Carlson. Someone named Heikki - nickname "Hippi" - was also a member of the band. "Open Your Eyes" is a beautiful acoustic guitar pop ballad. Hassisen Kone: Fraigadi fromba (1982) Hassisen Kone: Koulut kii (1982) Hassisen Kone, one of Finland's foremost punk / new wave bands. This is where Ismo Alanko started his recording career before fronting Sielun Veljet and then turning into a solo act. These songs are among the rarest in the band's catalogue, only released on a best-of in 1982. "Koulut kii" is Alice Cooper's "School's Out". Humppa-Cannon: Mr. Cannon (1974) Aka Olavi Kivikoski aka Vilho Kohvakka. Kohvakka was a veteran in the Finnish schlager field when he won the national William "Cannon" Conrad lookalike contest, and was even allowed a meeting with the TV star. This song about the TV detective is hard to dislike despite Kohvakka's slightly unpolished voice. Jig-Saw: Arki-ihminen (1975) Jig-Saw: Once Bitten, Twice Shy (1977) Jig-Saw: Ujo poika (1975) Jig-Saw is one of the great unknowns in Finnish rock'n'roll. One LP "Ujo poika" for Hi-Hat Records - the label's first LP release! - in 1975, singles "Superkingi" (1975) and "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" (1977) followed. None of these released sold well, and they were met with critical indifference. "Ujo poika" and "Arki-ihminen" are from the album, I grabbed these from radio programs. "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" is a cover of the Ian Hunter tune with Riki Sorsa doing the vocals, this one I taped on cassette in 1994 from the radio. No other songs have I heard. Kaukanapoissa: Yökerho (1982) Ahh, this one's classy. Kumma Heppu ja Lopunajan Voidellut led by Ari Närhi, saxophonists Jukka Mikkola and Esa Sirkkunen, and vocalist Pauli Heikkilä perform this ultra-stylish depiction of a high-class nightclub. A masterpiece! Kurkihirsi: Täytyy takoa kun rauta on kuumaa (1974) Hannu Takala, later in Yellow and Melvin McRae Band, led this rock band who made only one single. A catchy song. Mad Lindell: Grandmaster Klaus (1988) Lindelltronics: Maan tapa (1990) (Unknown): Presidenttipeli (1994) Here are three examples of electronic music, all done in roughly the same style: you sample the speech of other persons and create something humorous out of it. One of the most prominent figures in Finnish electronic music has been Tommi Lindell. He debuted in 1987 with the single "Grandmaster Klaus", which caused something of a stir. The regular long-running TV program Levyraati, the Finnish version of Juke Box Jury, had music pedagogue Klaus Järvinen as one of the regular members. Järvinen was also founder and headmaster for the Pop and Jazz Conservatory in Oulunkylä, and Tommi Lindell was a student in that school. He made this tribute to his former headmaster by sampling his comments taken from recent episodes of Levyraati, and the episode where "Grandmaster Klaus" was played to Järvinen's unsuspecting ears is one of my most cherished TV memories. As my old tape recording of this song had some disturbances throughout, I made an mp3 file out of a YouTube video instead. Thanks to INGVALD34 for uploading the video and letting me relive this great memory! I would have posted a comment, but YouTube didn't let me do it for some reason - I'm thanking you here instead. The next song is also by Tommi Lindell. "Maan tapa" was the b-side of the 1990 single "Rappilan hätävara", and it also caused a stir. Lindell had captured the very same digital signal our national broadcasting company YLE used at the time to shut down the broadcasts for the day (we didn't have 24 hour TV back then), and put the signal at the end of this song. When "Maan tapa" was played on the air, it reportedly shut down TV sets around the country, so the song was banned from the radio. My recording unfortunately suffers from a low, disturbing noise throughout, but since the song is such a rarity I decided to post it anyway. The third song is a bit of a mystery. It was made in 1994 as a sendup of the presidential candidates: Elisabeth Rehn, Martti Ahtisaari (who ultimately was elected president), Raimo Ilaskivi, Paavo Väyrynen, Sulo Aittoniemi and others are all heard sampled in this track. Aittoniemi's harmonica solo is a highlight. The mystery is that I'm not sure who made this track. Neither have I found any data that this song "Presidenttipeli" actually exists as an official release. I heard it twice on the radio, and I managed to capture the song on tape the second time I heard it. I don't expect anyone to be able to shed any light on this matter, but if anyone knows something about it, please tell me. Salomon: Unisatu (1975) Salomon (real name Timo Silvennoinen) was a pop singer who had one hit during his relatively long career. He's well remembered for starring in the rock musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" and a questionable media coup where his clothes were found on the Haukilahti beach, indicating that he had supposedly drowned in the sea. Salomon's "Unisatu" hit was followed by five LP's, last one in 1984. Some might remember his early single "Mentiin seslonkiin" (1974) as well. Vanha Isäntä: 60-luvun kauan soiva blues (1979) Finally I got hold of a song that has been a real nuisance to find. I'm a fan of Al Stewart, so naturally I have his entire recorded output from 1966 to 1976, including the "Past, Present and Future" album where his "Post World War Two Blues" is found. But Vanha Isäntä's cover has eluded me and a certain other person for long, despite still receiving occasional radio airplay. Hector wrote the lyrics, compiling selected events from the 1960's into a fine nostalgia trip. Vanha Isäntä released this on a single backed with "Onnemme napanuora" in 1979, but to this day neither song has made it to a CD. I'm certain there are lots of people who want this track, so dig in! Zape Leppänen: Vieraat kasvot (1983) Drummer Urpo "Zape" Leppänen has played in Orfeus, Kalevala, Limousine, Bluesounds among other bands. He made a solo single "Vieraat kasvot / Punainen polkuauto" (1983) and an LP called "Stereo World" (1984) for Johanna Records. "Vieraat kasvot" covers the song "I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)", made memorable by Grace Jones.
