It is not quite that straight forward. Henry actually played both sides off against each other. There were actually cases where catholic priests and protestant priests were actually dragged together on hurdles to their executions. Bitterly arguing all the way. The protestants to be burned at the stake for heresy (as even after the reformation Henry still regarded himself as a catholic even though he considered himself the head of the church not the pope) while the catholic priests were to be drawn and quartered as traitors as they did not recognise Henry as being the head of the church in England. Henry was a self serving monster plain and simple. The Saddam Hussein of the 16th century.

To further Ant's point: It is a widely held misconception that when Henry VIII set up the Church of England it was a protestant church from day one. Wrong! During Henry's life it was very much the catholic church but with Henry as head instead of the Pope. It was only during the reign of his son Edward VI that the Church of England became a protestant church. Henry's only reason for setting up his own church was not because he disputed the catholic faith (he had actually championed it in a pamphlet and was rewarded by the Pope with the title Defender of the Faith). His only reason for starting up the Church of England was so that he could divorce his wife and marry his mistress, Anne Boleyn.

Labouring the point even further: Henry VIII was one of the most historically important characters to have lived in the last millennium. His break with the established Catholic church (not the faith) was ultimately to pave the way for both religious and intellectual reform. Although no proponent of freedom himself, the consequences of his actions were to loosen the stranglehold Rome had on social, intellectual and academic development in Europe generally, and in Britain particularly. Despite Mary's best efforts, Catholicism and it's corrupt institutions of social control never really recovered in Britain, much to the benefit of our social and economic development.
