It's both the same as it is different. Many parts of the original story come back but are seen from a different perspective. If you haven't seen the original series you should watch those first.

It's the same to a point. The original anime did not follow the manga all the way through and branched off into it's own storyline after a certain point. This one sticks to the manga exclusively(or rather, they say it will), with exception to the first episode.
