The generous lady in question was obviously purging her late husband's classical record collection of all music written after c.1900 - and the Hindemith discs were sandwiched among the Shostakovich and Schnittke LPs. These discs, I assume, had been acquired by the lady's late husband - who had been a doctor in Berlin - most likely when they were new. Since Hindemith's music was banned by the National Socialists shortly after these historic recordings were made (1934), I've often wondered what it might have felt like at that time to have owned them (on the other hand, my benefactor exhibited no desire to even acknowledge their existence). Nevertheless, I was astounded to discover that these discs were simply being given to me - but very thankful to be receiving them. In terms of musical substance alone - which includes some remarkable conducting and playing - these recordings belong in the libraries of all those who value the music of the past century. All of this is quite aside from the fact that the dilemma confronting the painter Matthias Gruenewald (c.1470-1528) - the subject of Hindemith's banned opera - remains as artistically / politically acute today as it was during the 1930s. <br /> <br /> The only significant mention in the internet of the Keller-Quartett Muenchen - apparently active from the 1950s through the 1970s - relates to the quartet's contributions to what now comprises a 23-CD set of Reger's complete chamber music (originally recorded by Da Camera Magna during the 1970s). The very fine performance presented here of Hindemith's Quartet in E flat is taken from an extensive series of LPs issued during the 1950s - '60s by the German record club Europaeischer Phonoklub, Stuttgart (...and as a record collector in Germany, one can't avoid finding these LPs, because they seem to be just about everywhere...). The sound is good - as it is on the 78rpm discs described above. <br /> <br /> While it's difficult to date Fredell Lack's performance (late 1940s? early 1950s?) - with pianist Leonid Hambro - of Hindemith's early Violin Sonata in D ... it's certainly still a great one!<br /> <br /> Restorations of 78rpm material recorded 1934 (Telefunken); LP restorations of material recorded c.1950 (?) - c.1960 (Allegro; Opera labels).<br /> <br /> Notes (English, German, French), covers, documentary material, etc. included.<br /> <br />
