And, indeed, listen to Frank's 1955 set In The Wee Small Hours and his braggadocio falls away to reveal the melancholic core of the man. At the heart of this compilation is Susanna And The Magical Orchestra's sweeping version of Joy Division's most haunting track. It's a song that Ian Curtis reportedly wrote after a night spent listening to a copy of Frank Sinatra's Forty Greatest Songs. And, as if to suggest lessons well learnt, it possesses the requisite sense of vocal melodrama coupled with the unflinching honesty so prized by Sinatra. The same is true of the cathartic qualities that you'll find on this bittersweet collection of songs by artists as diverse as Nina Simone, Jarvis Cocker and the much missed Elliot Smith.
