Near to the ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ middle I was reminded oddly enough of Team America World Police. ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ TAWP also sets out as a leftist critique of Bush&#039;s right-wing ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ America, but switches halfway to make fun of liberals. Manderlay ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ is more layered, however. ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ Grace (Bryce Howard) her father and his gangsters, after having ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ left Dogville come upon Manderlay, an old plantation where blacks ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ are still held like slaves, complete with whippings. ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ Grace uses her fathers gangsters to free the blacks from the ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ whites and takes it upon herself to guide the blacks to real ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ freedom. However, this proves more complicated than she first ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ thinks. The storyline of white betrayal and trickery of blacks is ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ maybe a tat too predictable, and Von Trier wisely leaves it ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ pretty quickly. There&#039;s hardship as a sandstorm destroys the ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ crops. This happened because what seemed a good idea at the time, ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ chopping down trees to maintain the slave cabins, turn out to be ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ a disaster: the trees were not so much a garden for the old ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ missus as a protection for sandstorms. But this is overcome with ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ hard work and determination and it seems that democracy and self- ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ reliance might take on hold on the old plantation. Even the ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ relationship with the former owners, now workers on the ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ plantation is harmonious. The next step to sent away the ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ gangsters, thereby truly leaving the power to the former slaves. ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ What follows, is not really so much as prove, that democracy and ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ true freedom is hard to instill at gunpoint, but more a statement ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ that states it&#039;s very hard to change a society just like that. ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ In the end, Manderlay is perhaps not so much a critique of ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ American society, nor of the continued racism, of the still ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ enduring disenfranchisement of African-Americans by whites ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ (even though it DOES strongly speaks out against that in it&#039;s end ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ sequence), as it is about paralysis of communities. ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ Or is it? While the film might seem to start out as a critique of ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ white oppression of blacks, stil, and in the middle changes to ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ critiqueing blacks for still enslaving themselves, it turns out not ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ to be neither, nor both. With the revelation at the end that the ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ situation at Manderlay was far more a cooperation than a ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ oppression, (Glover as Wilhem: "How dumb do you really think we ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ are?") &#039;Manderlay&#039; seems wants to tell us that every society gets ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ the political structure it needs, and that societal change is not ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ only hard, but damn slow as well. ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ A real plus about Manderlay is that Von Trier pisses off ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ Americans. They get all upset that a foreigner dares to criticise ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ their country while never having been there, but when they do the ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ same to others, for example Iraq (occupying a country might count ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ as the severest form of criticism), it&#039;s supposed to be okay? ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ They expect everyone to applaud? ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ ÃÃÿ >ÃÃÿ Gimme a fat FUCKing break here.
