Atlas aims to produce and display high quality charts of the world for users of FlightGear, an open source flight simulator. This is achieved through two main parts: The map creator (simply called Map) and the Atlas viewer. ATLAS is a separate navigation program you can run alongside FlightGear flight simulator, it is best run on a separate PC via a Local Area Network as it can put a lot of strain on your resources on the same PC as where FlightGear is running, even on a separate PC it is wise to not zoom out to far as memory can rapidly be swallowed up! This project is an old one, I have been told and has been abandoned by the original developer however it does still provide a useful resource as an add on package to the FlightGear project which I have seen go from strength to strength.
