Il chitarrista, cantante Pete Townshend (nome d'arte di Peter Dennis Blanford Townshend,1945, Londra, Gran Bretagna) e il bassista John Alec Entwistle (1944, Londra, Gran Bretagna) si conoscono a scuola e nel 1962 formano alcuni complessi giovanili (tra cui una band di dixieland, in cui il primo suona il banjo e il secondo la tromba).<br /> <br /> Con Roger Harry Daltrey (1945, Hammersmith, Londra, Gran Bretagna), di professione lattoniere, alla voce, i Detours cominciano a crearsi un discreto seguito nella Londra dei primi anni '60. Con l'arrivo dell'eccentrico batterista Keith John Moon (1947, Londra, Gran Bretagna - 1978, Londra), personaggio trascinante e spettacolare (subentrato al dimissionario Doug Sandom), si afferma un'immagine forte e ribelle del quartetto che si fa chiamare inizialmente The Who e poi su indicazione del manager Pete Meaden, The High Numbers. Con questo nome pubblicano, nel 1964, il 45 giri &quot;I'm The Face&quot; (firmato, come pure il lato B &quot;Zoot Suit&quot;, dallo stesso Meaden).<br /> <br /> L'anno seguente ? decisivo: i quattro si ribattezzano The Who e vengono scoperti da Kit Lambert e Chris Stamp (in precedenza registi di cortometraggi) che manovrano affinch? il complesso entri nel cuore della colorita scena britannica. Il 7 settembre 1978 muore a causa di un'overdose di sedativi. ? l'inevitabile conclusione di una vita sfrenata e senza limiti.<br /> <br /> Nel 1979 escono il film semi-biografico The Kids Are Alright (che gli Who adornano con una colonna sonora arricchita da diversi inediti) e la colonna sonora di Quadrophenia, una bella pellicola con l'emergente Sting dei Police nella parte del protagonista.<br /> <br /> Dopo lunghe e dolorose discussioni, gli Who decidono di ingaggiare Kenney Jones (1948, Londra, Gran Bretagna), proveniente dagli Small Faces e il tastierista John &quot;Rabbit&quot; Bundrick ex-Free (quest'ultimo &quot;arruolato&quot; solo per i concerti). Il tour mondiale ? un trionfo, ma il 3 dicembre 1979, al Riverfront Coliseum di Cincinnati, un'altra tragedia colpisce gli Who: 11 ragazzi in attesa di entrare al concerto vengono schiacciati dalla folla.<br /> <br /> Il buon successo di Empty Glass (1980), album-solo di un Townshend assalito da gravi problemi di tossicodipendenza, sembra preludere alla fine del marchio. Ma la pubblicazione di Face Dances (1981) smentisce tutti: ? una decisa virata verso sonorit? maggiormente pop, con il singolo &quot;You Better You Bet&quot; a far da apripista per il mercato statunitense (in Gran Bretagna il disco passa inosservato).<br /> <br /> L'anno seguente It's Hard presenta una sintesi migliore tra vecchio e nuovo, grazie ad ottimi esempi quali &quot;Eminence Front&quot; e &quot;Athena&quot;. Si tratta dell'ultimo disco in studio del gruppo, che dopo Who's Last (doppio live del 1984) si riunisce per uno spettacolare e nostalgico tour nel 1989 (con Simon Phillips alla batteria, Bundrick alle tastiere, Jody Linscott alle percussioni e una sezione fiati), capace di far sognare i fan grazie al doppio live dedicato a Keith Moon Join Together (1990), dove gli Who, nonostante tutto, dimostrano di avere ancora un'incontenibile energia.<br /> <br /> Nel 1994 viene pubblicato lo stupendo box-set retrospettivo di 4 cd con diversi inediti Thirty Years Of Maximum R&amp;B (con una spettacolare e omonima videocassetta di tre ore). Nel febbraio dello stesso anno, Townshend, Entwistle e Daltrey si riuniscono per due concerti alla Carnegie Hall in occasione del cinquantesimo compleanno di Daltrey. Accompagnati da un'orchestra di 65 elementi, vengono raggiunti sul palco da Sinead O' Connor, Eddie Vedder dei Pearl Jam e Lou Reed. Nel 1996 la formazione si riunisce ancora per un grande concerto a Hyde Park dove, per la prima volta, rappresenta per intero l'opera Quadrophenia dal vivo, continuando a suonare in tutta Europa sino all'estate del 1997.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Cosa ne pensa Pete Townshend della diffusione della propria musica in internet?<br /> <br /> &quot;...Avevo i diritti d&rsquo;autore e se tu non li rispetti, non li rispetti!
