The tales she sings have all the<br /> horror of an original Grimm tale - all &lsquo;glass-eyed dolls&rsquo;,<br /> eels that scream before they are skinned, thumbs tearing on<br /> the sharpest thorns and stuffed dogs - and her bizarre flights<br /> of fancy are the dreams of children, far more unsettling for<br /> an adult.<br /> <br /> If you&rsquo;re thinking this all sounds a little fragmented and out<br /> there, for the most part it is but it&rsquo;s a sound well grounded<br /> in some classic folk singers gone by. There&rsquo;s something of<br /> Nick Drake in the title track on My mother&rsquo;s children and the<br /> Brighton based singer&rsquo;s otherworldly vocals, sit somewhere in<br /> between Joni Mitchell and Sandy Deny.<br /> <br /> It&rsquo;s avant garde, trancy and beguiling fantasy folk with an<br /> unsettling twist evoking Eliot&rsquo;s Wasteland in it&rsquo;s beautiful<br /> bleakness.<br />
