This 14-song Very Best Of shares no fewer than 10 tracks with the '84 Best Of, Track Record. Secondly, there is the curious case of the 1991 remix of what for many remains Joan Armatrading's most moving composition, Love And Affection. Apparently the thinking behind this Hugh Padgham-led expedition was to gently rejig the track so that it sounded exactly as you remember it. Technically speaking, this retrospective tweaking of imaginary nostalgia buds involved enhancing the vocal, enriching the strings and enlivening the drum sounds. Sadly, despite what probably amounted to hours of painstaking &quot;bouncing-down&quot; in the studio, none of this is audible to the untrained human ear but will doubtless be warmly appreciated by romantically-inclined sheepdogs now and for always. On a more positive note, virtually all of Armatrading's finest moments are present and correct: from Down To Zero's pining curlicues of pedal steel to last year's tentative, touching More Than One Kind Of Love, from the worryingly subdued rage of The Shouting Stage to the aching dilemma between security and excitement - the symptoms of which have seldom been better described - in The Weakness In Me. It is when she rocks out that Armatrading is at her most unconvincing, tending to match the guitar distortion and overblown rhythms with ham-fisted sentiments and unusually insensitive relationship appraisals. Me, Myself, I all but trips itself up in an attempt to be percussively cute and discordantly clever, Drop The Pilot is too aggressive to be believable and Call Me Names comes across as a light-hearted look at partner-beating. It has long been a source of confusion as to why Armatrading bothered with the clumsy cod-reggae of Rosie (pulled back from the brink of complete crassness by a swaggeringly confident chorus) and the cheddar-headed chirpiness of I'm Lucky (replete with plodding Numanoid synth intro) when her downtempo songs - invariably, for reasons she confesses to be beyond her, found at the end of side one on normal albums - were always so strong. Similarly, the wisdom of including the indecently over-exposed and comparatively weedy Willow is questionable when one of the superb ballads from the shamefully under-bought Shouting Stage LP or indeed any track from her life-altering self-titled third album.
