If you use vlc it is very easy to use subs, just have same file name as the avi file with the sub extension and you can select which sub you want from the menu option. Instead of SUB extension you put in ENG, GER, FRE etc for different ones. Now to get it working with my standalone is much harder. Sometimes it works and sometimes it wont.

WHAT ENGLISH SUBS ARE HARCODED? Is it just for the parts where they're speakin other languages (assuming there are some)..? Or does the whole movie have subs..? That's a big difference. Native English speakers naturally only want subs for the parts where the dialog is in another language..... Thanx.
