Snipers in hundreds of camouflaged battle positions laid waiting. With the heaviest bombings in history the Americans tried, without success to damage and destroy the Japanese army. During the landing on the first day no Japanese soldiers were to be seen. Despite this the Americans were slaughtered. The following days both sides suffered enormous losses. The Americans met a strong enemy who were prepared to fight to the end. To die for the emperor was a great honour. Only 214 Japanese survived this disastrous battle. No one left Iwo Jima unaffected. The battle changed them forever. This documentary is filled with unique photographs that have never been shown before, tactic information and interviews with survivors from this bloody battle.
