tqw's releases are usually excellent but there the scan quality in this book makes it unusable, frankly. All the "fi"'s seem to be replaced with a symbol that looks like an up-side-down ^ and there are spaces missing. From the first page: [quote] To Paraphrase Abraham Lincoln: You can compress all of the types of ^ lessome of the time and some of the types of ^ lesall of the time, but you can't compress all of the types of ^ lesall of the time. [/quote] Also the cover of the book actually says "Data Compression For Real Programmers". Interestingly if you look up that ISBN on Amazon you get the title "Compression Algorithms for Real Programmers" with a picture of this cover.

The ISBN/title thing is just strange and I wouldn't even call it a goof. I could only surmise that this was a very early version of the book which was renamed before being released to the general public, or something. In this PDF the ISBN in the Library of Congress data is "???????". The letter quality for the most part is actually very good, even in the formulae, sidebars and diagrams. But I do see a consistent pattern in that for any word containing (or starting with) "fi", the "fi" is replaced by a strange mark and there is no space before the next word. (The strange mark is presumably wider than "fi" would be). On closer inspection, on the second page the "fl" in "A picture of a flock of 10,000 seagulls" is replaced by a box character. Not knowing much about how PDF's work, do I need a particular font on my system to view it properly? I'm viewing it with Adobe Reader 7.0.9 on Windows 2000. Does anybody else experience this problem?
