Where there is the practical consideration of having to hook up the
web server to some back end database (usually SQL). And where the HTML pages
returned by the web server to an external browser are dynamically generated.
This mixture of presentation code, accessing data and applying business logic is
often commingled, making it very error prone. Catalyst's main requirement is
that you are already proficient in Perl. But for many developers, this is
already the case. Presumably by deliberate design, the narrative is somewhat
terse. At least this gives the reader a concise text (no thousand page tome!)
that can be relatively quickly read and applied. The crucial ability to connect
to a SQL database appears straightforward. You should be able to do this
rapidly, in terms of amount of code customisation. I'm guessing that the
Catalyst modules that handle this have a lot of logic embedded, leaving you with
easy tasks. Also nice to see that Catalyst lets you run automated tests of your
resultant system. Various testing methodologies can be applied Catalyst is
neutral between them.

Table Of Contents

Preface 1
Chapter 1: Introduction to Catalyst 5
Chapter 2: Creating a Catalyst Application 13
Chapter 3: Building a Real Application 31
Chapter 4: Expanding the Application 53
Chapter 5: Building a More Advanced Application 83
Chapter 6: Building Your Own Model 119
Chapter 7: Hot Web Topics 133
Chapter 8: Testing 155
Chapter 9: Deployment 175
Index 185

Product Details

* ISBN: 1847190952
* ISBN-13: 9781847190956
* Format: Paperback, 200pp
* Publisher: Packt Publishing, Limited
* Pub.
