really? its just x264 you would think this day with all the 720p x264s.... but anyway just download CoreAVC codec from torrents (which should install haali media splitter as well) then play in media player classic (download at free-codecs.com) or this modified version of TCPMP works great to with no setup or work: http://snipr.com/23mcu

Hi MM, I have seen you putting up two versions of an episode, one an .avi file, and one a .mkv HQ edition. What I don't understand is the difference between these two files since both are about the same size (350MB). Could you please elaborate on that? If someone else here knows, explain away to save MM's time -- I'm sure MM's a busy person. Thanks -- appreciate it! -Jesse

Jesse, The mkv (matroska) format allows much better quality at the same file size. MM usually makes one of both, since the avi format is still much more common and well-known, but really, if you have the right codecs to watch it, the mkv beats the avi big time.

basically the avi has XviD video in it while the mkv "hq edition" has x264 (newest and greatest video codec) in it. x264 on high settings like this gives much better quality then xvid. just to give a rough idea, i've done test encodes of x264 at 500k bitrate that looked almost as good as the 350mb xvid at double the bitrate (1000k). so these encodes at 880-980k really do look a bit better then the avi if your watching on anything better then a SDTV. less blocking, sharper details, crisper image...

Surely if you play these .mkv files on a computer monitor it doesn't matter about the PAL / NTSC frame rate difference. Question, if you play these files on a computer and send them to a TV/Monitor via the Component Cables, is there a difference? Will the NTSC TV simply act as a monitor and play either format? Thanks for the encodes [MM] - personally I would dump the .avi format altogether. Watching on my 24" WS LCD Samsung SyncMaster 245B is as good as it gets

If all you want to do is convert, and burn it to a DVD, just use ConvertXtoDVD. It will handle all the conversion necessary, and your finished product will play on your standalone player. Racer

Sighkick theres really nothing to worry about when watching on a 60hz ntsc tv. the output device will most likely just do a good frame rate repeat kinda thing as it does with 24fps stuff. i've watched plenty of stuff at 25fps and really didn't see a benefit of setting the display from 60hz to 75hz.

The deinterlacing on this is simply awful -- watch the credits to really highlight how bad it is. Maybe it's just this, but cap seems quite muddy compared to last seasons'. I did a side by side comparison of the scene release (ANGELiC) vs this one, and it's clear that this one is significantly less clear and in general not as good. Not to hate on the capper, who I've been following since last year, but a good codec can't make up for poor source material. A decent cap is preferable to a bad one at slightly higher resolution.

Sometimes I really wonder what the difference would be if someone (alma99er? :-)) used that BBC feed and created a full resolution h264 WITHOUT trying to get it down to 350MB --- maybe aiming for 500 or 700MB instead. I guess 1100MB would be oversized for a non-HD :-) After all, neiter MM nor alma99er are doing scene releases, so there's no real need for them to stick to those file sizes... And while you're at it, optimize for quality, not encoding speed :-) Maybe I'm the only one there, but I prefer "best quality" over "fast release". Anyway, I watched the S04 MM releases along with the alma99er Confidential, and they didn't look bad. Might actually download the scene release to check the claims above, but no hurry right now...

The differece is about time of conversion: 1/5 in time for speed to 1/10 to 1/30 for super quality.

Thanks Mad Martha for all your great work. I have enjoyed downloading your files for years. I was wondering though about your HQ editions of the the Torchwood and Doctor Who eps. I downloaded a few HQ's because of that damn logo they had in four of the regular edition Torchwood eps. If your second editions are HQ, why will windows only play them in classic media player, or show the media player classic symbol for the file, which is an inferior player? Also your regular editions can be burned and played on any stand alone divx player yet the high quality ones cannot because they are media player classic files which no divx player can recognize.

Media player classic (gabset mod, dl at free-codecs.com) is actually one of the best players around (you must be thinking of the old windows media player) combine that with the coreavc codec - http://www.mininova.org/com/1335147 and you've got the most efficient x264 setup. or VLC will work good right out the box but not as efficient, so no old comps - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ 3 reasons why stand alones don't work with it. 1: stand alone players stink 2: they don't recognize the much superior mkv extension 3: the files are x264 not xvid or divx (which are by comparison to high settings x264)
