And the timing couldnât be better. The band is | | celebrating ten years in the game. It all started in a medium sized, | | medium rough town in medium Sweden. | | One day some young lads decided to leave hip-hop behind and turn to the | | sixties, The Beatles and leather jackets. Lucky for us that they did! | | In a cellar in the middle of Borlänge the five guys of Sugarplum Fairy | | started dreaming of playing before big audiences and making it big. | | Playing together for six years the guys were ready for anything when | | they released their first EP âStay Youngâ in April 2004. And later that | | year their first hit single âSweet Jackieâ was released in Sweden and | | soon after that the album âYoung and Armedâ saw the light of day. | | Their debut album gave them attention and success in Sweden for their | | young, careless and cocky pop originating straight from bands like The | | Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who. | | After touring this album and starting to understand what it was all | | about it was time to release album number two, âFirst Round, First | | Minuteâ. This album came with a band who had grown, been through the | | real rock ânâ roll times and back and a band with more self-confidence. | | This album took them round the world and Sugarplum Fairy gained new | | listeners and fans everywhere. They toured and toured and showed | | everyone that this is a band to count on, both live and on album. | | | | And now two years later the five guys of Sugarplum Fairy are very very | | proud to present their third album, an album they are more proud of than | | any other. | | The work with âThe Wild Oneâ all started at Bambina Pizzeria, a pizza | | joint in Stockholm. The five guys treated their producer to be, Ronald | | Spremberg to the restaurants best pizza. Apart from being a great | | producer that had already worked with the guys at on time before there | | was something else that âsealed the dealâ according to singer Carl | | Norén: | | - He has a great body with well-tuned muscles. We knew that he wouldnât | | be one of those fat, tired producers that wouldnât have the stamina and | | drive to keep going for weeks in the studio. | | Of course this is not the whole truth. Sugarplum Fairy werenât looking | | for a producer who would make their album sound like any of the bands | | they like, they wanted a producer who would understand what THEY want to | | sound like! | | Sugarplum Fairy describe âThe Wild Oneâ as the most Sugarplum Fairy-like | | album so far. | | -We have found ourselves now and we know what we sound like. Itâs as if | | we have worked ourselves out, says Carl Norén. | | | | - We want to convey a feeling of that we donât care about what people | | think about us. In some sense we have always been outsiders. And this | | feeling is in the lyrics of âThe Wild Oneâ. While we where living in | | Borlänge we didnât fit in anywhere, so we moved to Stockholm thinking we | | would fit in there. But no, and this has made us into what we are today, | | says Carl Norén. | | | | Having this said itâs not a thematic album the Sugarplum Fairy have | | released even though âThe Wild Oneâ is evident in their lyrics, their | | music and even in their image. The music is freer than before; the | | song-writing brothers of Carl and Victor Norén have been braver this | | time around. Fans will still be able to recognize the hooks and melodies | | that Sugarplum Fairy do so well and new listeners will understand what | | it is that has taken Sugarplum Fairy this far. The raw but catchy pop is | | still there and the feeling of being outsiders is very present in the | | lyrics. | | | | These five guys have a reputation of making catchy rock songs and | | delivering amazing live shows. They go their own way and have therefore, | | appropriately, named their third album âThe Wild Oneâ, of course taken | | from the classic Marlon Brando film from 1953. | | This fits Sugarplum Fairy perfectly as they have always moved in a | | different direction than what is expected of them. | | But with that said, some things are meant to stay the same: Still the | | five friends from Borlänge, Sweden, still great melodies with a raw and | | not to polished feel to it and still the song writing brothers Carl and | | Victor Norén. | | So Sugarplum Fairy packed their bags and instruments and went to the | | best recording spot theyâve ever tried out. In a secluded house in | | Malaga with a pool, a ping-pong table, their own cook and plenty of | | inspiration âThe Wild Oneâ found itâs form. | | So three weeks in a house together night and day can make even the best | | friends get tired of each other. But these guys had the perfect medicine | | for the harder times. Watching the arguments of the band The Troggs over | | and over again always put a smile on their faces and kept them going | | even when time could get rough. | | So this paradise on earth was the perfect place to record the perfect | | album. This was where the five guys in Sugarplum Fairy found their way | | back to the friendship that has always been the grounds for the band. | | Leaving the business partnership feeling behind and having the time to | | play again. | | Sugarplum Fairy have shown once again that for every album released they | | take several steps forward and grow and reach a bigger fan-base and | | audience. | | | | âThis album is like a Sugarplum Fairy Greatest Hits. Every song is | | strong enough to stand on itâs own. We never felt that before with any | | album. On the last two albums the best songs carried the album in a way. | | Now everyone is a star, itâs like an All Star Team. | | If the record company would allow us we should release 12 singles. We | | donât think they will, but that would be a great statement about how we | | feel for this album.â | | -Sugarplum Fairy | | | | Never Thought Iâd Say That Itâs Alright - âPeople will probably say that | | this is the most uncommon song on the album, but in a way itâs the most | | âSugarplumishâ song of them all. We never have any limits when we write | | our music, and we like so many different styles. Itâs inspired by Bob | | Marley and every time you hear Bob Marley you forget all troubles and | | problems. I wanted to write a song like that, that just makes you smile. | | Music shouldnât be so complicated, sometimes a smile is enough.â | | | | The Escapologist - âThis is a dance song in a way. It hard not to stand | | still when you hear it. Itâs sounds like the Coral on speed. Plus I love | | songs that start with a bass line. Itâs a story about an escape artist | | who starts to mix up his professional life with his love life. And itâs | | inspired by the illusionist Criss Angel who was dating Cameron Diaz, | | Paris Hilton and all these famous beautiful women. Is that a part of his | | magic to get these girls? I think so.â | | | | In Berlin - âThe song in itself is very cinematic and so is the lyrics. | | The melody is very intense and suggestive while the lyrics paints up a | | picture of what is going on around the main character. A broken down | | love affair in the middle of a town falling into pieces. It's about | | leaving the past to be able to move on even if it means that you will be | | alone.â | | | | Caroline - âCaroline is written as an letter sent with an melody to one | | Caroline. The melody is almost lullaby-like and maybe inspired by all | | the beautiful Swedish traditional songs that I heard as a child. The | | guitars and the piano follow the melody line while the song builds up | | and breaks down several times in its four minutes. The song begins with | | the sound of a train whistle to set the lonely feeling of the song. It's | | a farewell song and suits as the last song on the album.â | | | | Sugarplum Fairy: | | | | Carl Norén â Vocals & Guitar | | Victor Norén â Vocals & Bass | | Kristian Gidlund â Drums | | David Hebert â Bass Organ | | Jonas Karlsson â Lead guitar | | | | | | http://www.sugarplumfairy.nu/ | | | | | +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ </pre>
