After starting his professional career as a music transcriptionist for Frank Zappa, Vai would also record and tour in Zappa's backing band starting in 1980. The guitarist began a solo career starting in 1984 and has released 13 solo albums as of 2008. Apart from his work with Frank Zappa, Vai has also recorded and toured with numerous musical artist including Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth and Whitesnake. Vai has been a regular touring member of the G3 Concert Tour which began in 1996. In 1999 Vai started his own record label Favored Nations with the intent to showcase, as Vai describes: &quot;...artists that have attained the highest performance level on their chosen instruments.&quot;.<br /> <br /> The Seventh Song is a 2000 album and guitarist Steve Vai's first compilation album. Unlike a standard &quot;greatest hits&quot; or &quot;best of&quot; album, this one has an unusual twist: all of the songs on it (save for the three new tracks and the hidden track) can be found on one of Vai's previous albums as the 7th track. The 7th track on each of his albums is meant to be the most emotional and well articulated piece on the album. &quot;Christmas Time is Here&quot;, while not previously released on a Vai album, can nonetheless be found as the 7th track on the 1996 Christmas compilation, Merry Axemas.<br /> <br /> The new songs on this album are &quot;Melissa's Garden&quot; (which does occupy the 7th track), &quot;The Wall of Light&quot;, and &quot;Boston Rain Melody&quot;. The track for &quot;Boston Rain Melody&quot; continues on to contain the unlisted song &quot;Warm Regards&quot;, the instrumental finale to Vai's 1996 album, Fire Garden, which there has been suspician of being originally planned to be the seventh track of the second disc, but when Steve Vai heard about the new 80 minute CDs, he made it a one disc album, so he restructured the album a little. There are some suspicians to fans that &quot;Warm Regards&quot; was originally intended to be the seventh track of the second disc of Fire Garden when it was planned to be two discs. However, Steve Vai hasn't said anything about it.
