Sad to say, it's a book by Eric Temple Bell, 1946. Seems like Pythagorean number mysticism, 'experiments are unnecessary', you just have to think about things to solve all problems. In short: B.S.

no. it's just an incoherent argument on the epistemology of science involving the history of mathematics/science/philosophy, but based mostly on grandiloquent, but ultimately empty, rhetoric. like HanMedBetongblandare said, the main argument the author tries to make is that all knowledge can be attained through inner thought and reasoning alone, and without any empirical observations. the book also seems terribly outdated. for instance in the introductory chapter the author gives "the internal motion of spiral nebluae" as one example of the "verifiable knewledge[sic] of natural phenomena which are still obscure to science" that "the thoughtful epistemologist may attain" through "purely abstract considerations." how ironic that by the time this book was published, it had already been proven through empirical observations of Cepheid variables that what were once considered another form of nebula inside our own Milky Way, were in fact other spiral galaxies outside of our own. in fact, Edwin Hubble made these observations as early as 1926--a whole 2 decades before this book was published. since then the term "spiral nebula" has fallen into disuse. and now the Hubble Telescope, named after Edwin Hubble, is one of the greatest tools of empirical observation for astronomers and astrophysicists even today.
