AMG Bio.txt AMG Review.txt Notes.txt (which is simply these notes included in the torrent) Bio Excerpt from All Music: Founded in 1957 by John McNally (guitar/vocals), the Searchers were originally one of thousands of skiffle groups formed in the wake of Lonnie Donegan's success with "Rock Island Line." The Searchers' immediate competitors included bands such as the Wreckers and the Confederates, both led by Michael Pender (guitar, vocals), and the Martinis, led by Tony Jackson (guitar/vocals). By 1959, McNally and Pender were working together as a duet; later in the year, Jackson joined as the lead vocalist. After drummer Norman McGarry left the Searchers he was replaced by Chris Crummy, who quickly renamed himself Chris Curtis. Other changes were in the works as Jackson built and learned to play a customized bass guitar. Learning his new job on the four-stringed instrument proved too difficult to permit him to continue singing lead, and McNally and Pender brought in a fifth member, Johnny Sandon (born Billy Beck). Johnny Sandon & the Searchers lasted from 1960 through February of 1962, and were extremely popular on the dance hall and club circuit in Liverpool. Sandon cut out for a career on his own, with another band called the Remo Four in early 1962. Meanwhile, the Searchers, now a quartet with Jackson once again lead singer, became one of the top acts on the Liverpool band scene, playing textured renditions of American R&B, rock & roll, country, soul, and rockabilly. ... Since 20-bit and 24-bit remastering have become the norm, however, the only challenge for Sanctuary Records (or the Sequel and Castle Records imprints) seems to be how inexpensive they can make the group's U.K. CDs, and also how many different reissues and compilations they can get out on the group's Pye Records library of around 100 songs -- after all, this three-CD set is at least the second triple-decker career survey of the group put out by the label since the 1980s. And the Liverpool-based band is threatening to pass the Who in terms of the sheer number of reissues and compilations of their work, which is amazing when you consider that the Searchers last charted a single about 38 years previously -- to be sure, they've been adding many good and some great songs to their catalog in the decades since, but no hits as such. This set is nicely comprehensive at 75 songs, limited as it is to finished masters and official releases -- there are no vault finds here such as the Iron Door Sessions tracks or live radio recordings, just singles, B-sides, EP tracks, and LP tracks covering four years in their history, all sounding excellent and in stereo wherever they were mastered that way.
