Unfortunately, of course, post 5 is irrelevant (as, therefore, presumably, is the download), because whether you use 'i.e.' or 'e.g.' has nothing to do with *grammar*. It is merely, as the example makes clear, a case of using on phrase phrase when you mean the other. Whether or not a comma goes after them (strictly speaking in both cases, one does) is also not grammar, but punctuation, and these days tends only to be done in very formal written communication. Equally, the fact that gaspah has strayed from two rules of the orthography of the English language in one go by not starting a sentence with a capital letter and not using the capital for the first person ****oun ('I') has nothing to do with grammar. Grammar has to do with the *structure* of the language - the way its components fit together to form phrases / sentences, not with whether or not you confuse one (Latin) phrase with another or whether or not you write a comma after something.

1. is orthography/spelling, NOT grammar. 2, 3, 6. are orthography, NOT grammar. 5. is to do with the meaning of words / confusing one word for another. Again, NOTHING to do with grammar, except in the sense that 'affect' is never a noun, but that issue is not dealt with. 8&9. both deal with word-confusion (although I shudder to think at 9 ever happening; NOT grammar). 10. is just plain ignorance / lack of decent English teachers (particularly at Primary level). At its simplest level, this error can be explained as the replacing of the shortening of 'have', i.e., '-'ve' with the word 'of' because they often sound the same when spoken. Again, not really grammar. I could write (and, indeed HAVE written) another 1,130 words on the topic. I'll not bore you with them just now. 4. I deal with in the previous post. 7. is grammar!!! Perhaps the download should be re-named...?

I have three dictionaries that say "impact" can be used as a verb. Language isn't controlled by purists, you know.

If only we had some sort of database of words with acceptable uses, definitions, and examples.. OH WAIT. Impact 'can' be used as a verb, especially if many dictionaries say so. Stop overcomplicating things. Also, thanks for the upload of the torrent, I chuckled at a few.

I didn't say 'impact' couldn't be used as a verb, just that, IMO, it's wan ky to do so. Sorry to hear you find the English language so complicated. You just stick with the uncomplicated rubbish in this file and I'm sure you'll be happy chuckling away to yourself in your simple, uncomplicated (tautology?) little world.
