He died in 1977, almost certainly poisoned by his own home-made hooch.<br /> <br /> Fowler's legacy is his book. The Cotswolds publisher David Burnett has laboured tirelessly to bring it to the wider audience that it so richly deserves, and he is succeeding big-time. Burnett expected to sell a few hundred copies of the book over a couple of years: instead he sold 1,000 on the first day of publication, and more than 10,000 since.The market analyst Mintel credits Countryman's Cooking with helping to inspire a boom in sales of venison, pheasant and grouse, and there is even talk of a dramatised version of Fowler's life: &ldquo;I think Colin Firth in a moustache would be perfect,&rdquo; says Burnett...<br /> <br /> Toni Richards, who knew him for more than 30 years and who was his wife for 12, is a feisty 85 now and still carries a torch for the love of her life: &ldquo;He was so bloody handsome it wasn't true,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;I loved him to bits, but he was a bastard with women.
