However, a restless wife, Lady Susan, and even more restless tenants, hint at troubled times ahead.

Following a fall whilst playing polo, Captain French faces something approaching a crisis of confidence. His nerve deserts him and, when the hunt proves incapable of catching an elusive silver fox, questions are asked about Captain French's (known as Master of Foxhounds) strength of character. As French himself knows, weakness is something his class – the gentry – finds insupportable whether in India or in marginally less remote corners of the Empire, such as West Cork. A price will have to be paid...

Director and producer Eoin O'Callaghan

Two episodes of one hour each.

With:
Captain Hugh French....John Dougall
Lady Susan French....Gillian Kearney
Slaney Morris....Cathy Belton
Wilfrid Glascott....Nicholas Boulton
Major Bunny Bunbury....Antony Glennon
Danny Quin....John Hewitt
Brigid Quin....Marion O'Dwyer
Tom Quin....Pat Kinevane
Tim O'Driscoll....Kevin Flood
Tierney....Stephen O'Rourke
Mrs Slattery....Aine McCartney
Mrs Glascott....Jasmine Callan
Capt Onslow....Richard Howard
Train driver....John Hewitt

Dramatised by Christopher Fitz-Simon and directed by Eoin O'callaghan.

About the Authors:
Edith Somerville (1858-1949) and Violet Martin (1862-1915: published as Martin Ross) were second cousins who formed the successful literary partnership, 'Somerville and Ross'. They met in 1886 and came to share a home in Drishane, County Cork.

Their first book, 'An Irish Cousin', appeared in 1889, and by Martin's death in 1915 they had published 14 titles together, including 'The Real Charlotte' (1894), 'Some Experiences of an Irish R.M.' (1899) and 'In Mr Knox's Country' (1915). Somerville continued to write and publish as Somerville and Ross despite Martin's untimely death, believing that, through spiritualist séances, the two remained in contact.

The lives of the two women were dramatised by Maureen Duffy in her BBC radio play 'Only Goodnight', (1981), in which Edith Somerville was played by Mary Wimbush and Violet Martin was played by Rosalind Adams. In 1986 the BBC radio play 'The Irish Cousins: On the Hunt for Somerville and Ross' also by Maureen Duffy was produced with Kate Binchy as Edith Somerville and Sorcha Cusack as Violet Martin. They left thousands of letters and 116 volumes of diaries detailing their relationship. Although they never explicitly described their relationship as lesbian they did make it clear that they regarded themselves as married.
_______________________

Type : mpeg 1 layer III
Bitrate : 128
Mode : joint stereo
Frequency : 48000 Hz
Encoder : Lame 3.96
_______________________

Ubuntu+MythTV+LAME+DVB-T=MP3 http://cheops.fm
http://radioarchive.cc - the Spoken-Word Radio Torrent Archive
