Do this: In steam go to File->Settings -Select the "In Game" tab -untick "Enable Steam Community In Game" -Click OK, Run Game. How do I do that? Where is that Steam you are talking about???

I had the same problem with "Platform Error: module failed to initialize", and found the solution all by myself. :) Without installed Steam client you cannot really change any options of Steam, but there's another way. Here's what you have to do: - run registry editor (WIN+R, type "regedit") - press CTRL+F and find a branch named "VALVE" - remove it (and all of the sub-branches) - reboot your computer And that's it. It should work now. You're welcome. ;)

Hey guys, I figured out why the batch file keeps getting stuck at 80& for some of you... Unfortunately, it's because of Vista, or more specifically, Vista's security center. If you look closely when you attempt to unpack HL2 with the batch file, some files are stopped for 'reason: access denied' In other words, "Vista says no", and prevents the batch file from placing the files into your program files directory because they may be harmful. If you can find a way to change the directory, then I would suggest that you change it to your desktop, then you can restart your system and move the folder manually into Program files. Otherwise there are still a few options. You can grab a copy of XP (risky business) and install the game running that and following the readme, copy the files to disk and install it on another computer that already has XP, before compacting it again and putting on your Vista system (the way I did, and slower than the first way), or download it from another torrent file (uncertain speeds). I hope i heped anyone out there who is was confused as I was. Oh yeah and just to make it sting a little more, when it gets stuck, it isn't at 80&, the batch file only notifies of each 20& it progresses through its extraction. It's actually the VERY. LAST. THING. it does. Piss-take or what? P.S. great upload diagodine, but I guess you are running this game off an XP PC right? lol, so yeah nobodies fault except microsofts.

Has anyone had a problem with the area right after the dam, I cant seem to get it working, it is weird its as if the graphics are messed up so I restart the game but same thing happens, there are invisible walls and such. nyc_bronx, in order to play CSS, Half-Life 2 MUST be installed in the same directory, as they use shared resources. You can't play on Steam's servers obviously, so you have to find private servers and patch up to their version. As for stability, it depends on location, really. If you go on a server in your country, you'll have better ping than playing on one halfway across the world.

OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH YEAAAH *****ES!! I got this game to work and it's awesome . The directory you have to install all the patches in is the directory in which you got hl2 and css both installed. I installed the games on the desktop like described in comment 161, so there came a map called root. In this map i put the patches and now i can play .

Yay! Got it! To everyone else having the above mentioned problems, do the following: 1. Copy Unpack.exe to X:\Windows\System32 2. Edit the "HL2 Install-Update.bat" (there should be an option "edit" when u right click it on Vista. Try opening it with Notepad if u're using other Windows): - After u have opened the edit window, get to the 2nd box and follow the instructions, typing or pasting the location of the "HL2" directory that comes in the .rar file. MAKE SURE to include the \HL2 in the end of the location. 3. Run "HL2 Install-Update.bat". It should work properly now. 4. Go grab some coffe. It takes a lot of time to extract everything... 5. Do the same to "CSS Install-Update.bat", using the proper directory and be happy. Sorry about the poor english and I hope I have helped.

hey guys, first off thanks for the great download, works fine (both half life and counter)but the main reason i downloaded was that i wanted to play online. i followed intrustions installed patches v1-v17 and whenever i try to play online it says my version is out of date and when ever i try to play offline (the same as post 36 and 37) i appear as gordon freeman and i just fall/cant move. i am really determined to get this working so please can someone try to help thanks

so the solution in control panel, on your account on vista (i am not sure of the name because my computer is in spanish so, just click in your account, where you go to change your password or your profile image. there will be a part where it says somthing like "activate or desactivate usser account management or control" im not sure (is textually translate from spanish: Activar o Desactivar el control de cuentas de Usuario) .. so next you have to click in there and unselect or unmark the part of using this tool. then you will rebot you computer <---- will not work if you do not reboot" and then just installit normally and it ll be working hope ive been helpfuld hope you have understood me :/

i installed but now in half life 2 when i get through doors and the loading sign comes up it says error. and online playing in CSS is not possible becouse version is not the same as on the servers, if i only know how to update it. i installed games in to specified folder and becouse i have steam i have replaced cfg of stem with cfg in this install file. and i have set that CFG files are in steam.

First of all: Vista users may have to use some other directory than program files due to the safety. I installed it to desktop its own directory. half life 2 works great but when i try to run counter strike it get error: "unable to load ma****st file 'scripts/surfaceproperties_ma****st.txt'" what am i suppose to do? i find the previous file from the directory so its there allright but how can i get it to load it?

1. extract the HL2+CSS folder 2. then when its done drag all the files to desktop 3. then run the HL2 install update (this way it will find the folder) 4. then run the CSS install update 5. then there should be 2 new icons on ur desktop those are the games u can start them from there i tried both and they work 6. u will need to download patches because unfortunetly the uploader didn't include them so i went here but its still downloading so gota be patient and i will reply back if they work ( http://www.mininova.org/tor/1187906 )

1. where it says "set DST=" you should add (after the &quot the folder you want to install half life 2 (e.g. if you want to install to c:\games\hl2 this line should read set DST=c:\games\hl2). If you leave this part blank it will install to c:\program files\half life 2, so it isn't really necessary to do anything here 2. But part 2 is necessary (unless you extracted the rar file directly to the root) since it says where your install files are located. If you extracted the hl2+css.rar to e.g. c:\temp you'll have to make the next part look like set SRC=c:\temp\hl2 (or c:\temp\css if you are editing the css install file), otherwise the installer won't find the CGFs. Hope this helps.

If you didn't extract directly to c:\ you need to edit the hl2 Install-update.bat (or CSS Install-update.bat) and tell it where to install the game to and where you are keeping the install files (the .cgf files) If you open the batch file with a text editor you should see some comments on what to do, but in case you find them confusing this is basically what you have to do (apparantly my comment was to long so it's split in 2 parts):

Apparantly the saving problem i had is a known problem for half life 2, but mainly for mac users. The solution is to edit play_hl2.bat (the one the installer creates and puts on your desktop) and add "+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1" to it. After you've done that the only line in play_hl2.bat should read: "C:\Program Files\Half Life 2\root\hl2.exe" -steamlocal -game hl2 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1 After i did this the game works perfectly for me and no problem anymore with the game crashing when i save. Many thanks to the uploader. I'm off to kill some combine soldiers.

copy this code: http://css.setti.info/code/masterserver/MasterServers.vdf paste to notepad and save as "MasterServers.vdf" on desktop. Then, go to "Half Life 2\root\platform\config" and replace the file. And done.. Only servers non steam will be showed when you click to find servers.

ok right away i will say i'm dumb i've read every post more than enough times to know this.... ok when i extracted the files in the rar. file i put them in C\program files\half life 2 note i had to make this file... then i coped the unpack file in system32... i then edited the HL2 install-update changed the top to C:\Program Files\Half Life 2.... and the bottom to C:\Program Files\Half Life 2\HL2+CSS\HL2... the update runs and extracts allot of files but then i get that message at 80% C:\Program Files\Half Life 2\HL2+CSS\HL2\source sounds.gcf closed. Does C:\Program Files\Half Life 2\root specify a file name or directory name on the target (F = file, D = directory)?... about 3 differnt messages pop up that look close to that i can pick either and it will let me finish installing but when i open the desktop file play_HL2 a dos window flashes and i cant play anything... will someone please help this dumb yet very angry soul...

I had to come back and thank the uploader and comment #80 poster sveinnv. my game was crashing and when I edited the .bat file with the code sveinnv provided it started working perfectly... thanks...

Anyone could help can setup.bat files such as this CSS be modded? i tried too put in some new weaponz and stuff but get nothing or i get tis error : "server is enforcing consistency for this file models\weapons\(weapon code.mdl) i seen tutorialz and all i see is dem draggin teh filez to cstrike folder an tipz? mayb onli workz for program file css not setup.bat ?

there is no new multiplayer option. which version has it? guys help if you know anything. alos there is no change game option.

although there is a custom game option that does the same thing. but there is no option of "Find Servers" instead there is an option of "play using steam" P.S. the earlier game i had stared from hl.exe(but woth no half life installed) and also had the option to switch between cs and cs:cz.

For those who don't have the play_Hl2.bat and play_CSS.bat files created on the desktop, I have a solution working for me: -Find the files: "steam.dll, steamclient.dll, and steamemu.ini" in the installation folder \Hl2+CSS\HL2 -Copy/Paste it in the root folder where there is hl2.exe -Run Hl2.exe and enjoys If you want to run CSS, just create a shortcut of HL2.exe and add : "-steamlocal -game cstrike" at the end! You're welcome

this installer actually works even on vista... just run the compatibility mode for early windows versions on the shortcuts of the game and up you go... the only nega on this one is the hl2.exe on taskmanager consumes alot of memory in vista so i suggest to terminate the process once you exit or quit the game... there is a prematurely exit option for this game and once you re-play the game, it will says "the game is already running, game can play on one time instance"... go to taskmanager and terminate hl2.exe on process... then re-run the game... up you go... for cs, you can play bots in this version... customise everything from number of bots to difficulty settings etc on the menu before you initialize the game... for me, its RECOMMENDED to play this games on LAN rather online... just a waste of time connecting and you can even bet your friends on a LAN game on CS... graphics is great, if you have a high end graphics card, the best you can feel this game...
