A favourite of mine, I have the CD of the 1987 version also by Abbado and Berliner Philharmoniker. Noth versions are top notch by performance and sound quality. In my opinion this new version sounds better in soundstage of main voices and woodwinds for example, the tempo is slightly faster but played more sweetly. However strings and violins have less volume now and are more difficult to distinguish. Percussions, brass and dynamics are more present now but I like better the highlight sound in the 87's version. The two interpretations are great but I couldn't chose one over the other. I'd reccomend listening to both versions.

Sorry, the version I was comparing with is by the Wiener Philharmoniker, not Berliner Philharmoniker, by Abbado too, of 1987.
