Videos Won't Play Right? No Sound, No Video, Or Neither?!

You should probably download VLC Media Player if you're looking for an all-in-one video/music experience. It plays nearly everything, including the oddball .ogg files, DVDs, VCDs, and just about anything else you can think of, and it doesn't need any extra codecs.

You can also use Media Player Classic, which is simple in design yet powerful, but you'll need to download some codecs for it to play non standard files.

Codec Packs

Codecs are needed when a certain player, like VLC or Media Player Classic, can't play your file. However, you shouldn't just go downloading every codec you can find, because you'll just cause more problems for yourself in the end.

You can run a program called VideoInspector on the file you want to run so you can find out what types of codecs you need for it.

A Few Packs...

K-Lite codec pack has almost everything under the sun, and anything you'll need. Here's the free version.

Codec Pack All-In-One is a general mass of codecs that can be found here.

Matroska Codec pack can be found here, and has most of the oddball codecs that are hard to find elsewhere.

What Exactly is a Codec, anyway?

The word codec is short for Coder-Decoder. Codecs can put the stream or signal into an encoded form, and retrieve or decode what form for viewing (This is the most common one).
