The first custom documentary movie – soon…
Filmmakers Ridley Scott and Kevin McDonald are joining forces with the video portals YouTube to create what they call "the first user-length documentary movie".
A documentary film entitled "Life in a Day" will include a video recording made in a single day, July 24, 2010. These records can be provided by YouTube users around the world. The world premiere will take place at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2011.
McDonald, who shot not much acclaimed "Play of State" and "The Last King of Scotland", has directed the movie, selecting the best pieces, which will be included in the final version of the film, while Ridley Scott is the executive producer. People whose staff will be included in the finished film will be listed in the credits as co-directors, and 20 of them will have the opportunity to attend the film festival "Sundance".
"Life in a Day" is a kind of "time capsule", which will show future generations what was the life on Earth on July 24, 2010. This is unique experiment in the field of social cinema, and the best way to collect unlimited array of video, which can take part of the global Internet community", - commented McDonald himself.
"Vital part of our mission is to provide help in individual story in the world, as well as providing a platform for expression and experimentation - agrees John Cooper, head of the festival "Sundance". - It's a great way to bring YouTube community and show the audience the festival is something new and unexpected".
Of course, there is no doubt that there is no censorship in the film will not. While, for example, video from occupied Iraq, showing the charms of life in occupied and devastated country, is unlikely to pass qualifying round. North Korean and Cuban users also, obviously, cannot worry. And working up for 20 hours a day Philippines and Chinese will have no time to shoot some video there and send it to Ridley Scott. But all sorts of feats of American citizens around the world certainly will get a full description.
