20th Century Fox acquired the rights to remake the classic musical "Guys and dolls." In 1955 the original tape was played by Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. For the new version of the film, studio wants to invite Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum. Actors are quite interested in the project.

Hollywood has long been thinking to re-shoot the picture, directed by Joseph Mankiewicz. Many years ago it sought Harvey Weinstein and the creators of "Chicago" Craig Zedan and Neil Meron. In connection with the statement were heard such names, as Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Vin Diesel, but it never got off the ground because of the reluctance of the widow of composer Frank Losser, author of music and lyrics, to give the nod to the implementation of idea. Years later, Fox still managed to achieve the desired.

Tape "Guys and dolls" was the on-screen transcription of the musical of the same name, which debuted on Broadway in 1950, have become very popular with the public and deserved recognition of "Tony" award. In turn, in the heart of the play lay the stories of Damon Runyon.

The actions of Mankiewicz movie are developed in the 1920s. In the center of the plot are the gambling organizer Nathan Detroit (Sinatra), crucial to make a bet with a ladies' man Skye Masterson (Brando). The subject of their dispute - Salvation Army sister Sarah (Jean Simmons), which is the first hero has a second charm and persuade to go to Cuba. If he loses, he will have to enterprising businessmen thousand dollars, just as Sinatra character needed for business.

The studio has not said whether the events of remake will take place in the last or this century. It is not known who will take over production of the film and its script. Both actors have already proved themselves in the music genre, and can make a strong duo in the history of updated "Guys and dolls." However, the company has just started talks with the stars.

Gordon-Levitt in this year can be seen in his directorial debut, "Don Jon," in which, by the way, is involved in a small role and Channing. In the summer 2013th Tatum will appear in the action film "White House Down".

Venice 2012: Joker’s life

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (1 votes, average: 5.00 out of 5)

Venice Film Festival has been closed with the picture of Jean-Pierre Amery "The Man Who Laughs." Freestyle adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel is stylistically reminiscent of Tim Burton's early films, but without the black humor. The protagonist, Gwynplaine, on whose face is carved eternal smile, easily joins the pantheon of romantic renegades.

Jean-Pierre Amery was 10 years old when he saw a television three-part adaptation of Hugo's novel "The Man Who Laughs," directed by Jean Kershbron. The history of suffering boy with eternal smile will always remain in his memory. After the success of "Romantics Anonymous" director decided to fulfill his dream and take off his own version of the tragic story.

In 1928 came the first film version of the novel - a Hollywood movie with Conrad Feydton as Gwynplaine and happy ending instead of a tragic outcome. It is an image created Feydton influenced the image of the Joker in the Batman stories.

In Hugo's action takes place in England XVII century, but Amery has decided not to become attached to a particular place and time. The film opens with a dramatic night scene: from the landing departs a ship, leaving the boy on the beach, begging not to leave him. Alone, the child seeks asylum, shelter. Along the way he finds a woman, which clung to her chest girl. Gwynplaine realizes that the woman froze to death, and the girl is still alive, and takes with him. He finds refuge with Ursus (Gerard Depardieu), the seller of herbs, living in a poor tent. The girl is blind, Ursus gave her a name Deya.

Gwynplaine had never seen himself in the mirror and doesn’t know what his face looks like. His former guardians severely disfigured boy, having cut his face clown smile. Scar makes it a subject of ridicule village boys, but gradually Ursus and Gwynplaine understand that ugliness amused and attracted the audience that is willing to pay to hear an interesting story about a boy with a devilish grimace. Ursus, Gwynplaine and Deya begin to make performances and make their living.

Deya (Krista Tere) and Gwynplaine (Marc-André Grondin) get older, their relationship transformed. They have not only a sense of kinship. Arriving in the capital, where they are going to give a new performance, change their lives dramatically. Gwynplaine success comes, and with it the attention of influential duchess. When they find that he actually comes from an aristocratic family, the familiar world is crumbling. High society is much more cruel than the world of fair actors and ordinary public.

The novel "The Man Who Laughs" was written by Hugo in 1866-1869, respectively, and at one time has been cool adopted.

Amery did not meticulously reproduce all the story lines of Hugo's novel, focusing on Gwynplaine and his feelings. Marc-Andre Grod, almost always located in the frame, reproduces embarrassed young man, the first discoveries of the glory, cruelty and love. Gwynplaine - an idealist whose ugliness never angered him to the world. He grew a noble man with a beautiful and suffering soul who hides behind an endless smile.

According to Amery, Gwynplaine is much like any teenager, including to himself, "Gwynplaine thinks he's ugly. He can not imagine that can be loved and welcomed. He has both physical and social systems. I have always made films about those who are different physically. This is what I always hurt. So I would like to focus on the story of a teenager. And modern teenagers will see them selves here too".

To makeup Gwynplaine it took three hours each morning. A special mask has been created for several months.

"Mask creates a distance between the actors - said Jean-Pierre Amery of complex makeup. - Marc-Andre initially upset. He put so much emotion into his game, and his face always had that smile. Finally, he realized that he felt exactly what his character. Gwynplaine is suffering inside, but smiling on the outside. "

Amery does not hide that he was inspired by Burton's films and characters. Edward Scissorhands with his naive soul was one of those who influenced Gwynplaine by Amery. "Sleepy Hollow" and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" also played a role in how bleak and intense theatrical director has made the world of "The Man Who Laughs." The space is filled with fog, fire, velvet, mirrors and reflections, as well as the beautiful music of Czech composer Stephen Much.

Symphonic music sounding in the film, was written under the influence of the works of Ligeti, Shostakovich and Mahler.

Tragic end the director compares to the opera. "It is a bit like the last act in the great operas. All the main characters die. In "La Traviata", she dies. In "La Boheme", she dies. Madame Butterfly dies. I really wanted that was like in the opera"- shared his vision Amery.

Tom Cruise: “I learned to sing for five hours a day”

In an interview with Playboy magazine, Tom Cruise talked about his role in "Rock of ages" and how the singer received the approval of the group Def Leppard. Excerpts from the interview read below.

- July 3 you will be 50. At this age, most men suffer from indigestion, bald, and monitor pressure. How do you manage to look almost twice younger then your age years?

"Honestly, no idea (laughs). I work. I'm always with my family. Train a lot, a little sleep. Toil, in a word."

- You do not even have wrinkles, unlike your peers. You do plastic surgery, or maybe just going to?

- "I do not do and do not intend to."

- What does this line mean to you?

"When I played in "Rebound", my first movie I remember lying in a hotel room at night, thinking about how I like my job. I wanted to shoot from 4 years old, and therefore hoped that, if I'm lucky in a "Rebound", maybe I could do it all my life. Approaching 50, I still do it. July 3, I'll be in Iceland on the set. My family, my wife - they understand me. I spent most of many birthdays on the set, they were all excellent. "

- What have you learned since then, as you passed 20?

"I have always adhered to some values. Family to me means a lot. When I'm on the set, all come to me. When Katie is working, I and the children are with her. We are always together. And I'm always with my mom and sisters. I've always wanted to be a father, husband. I have a good labor education - I worked part time, from eight years: clipped lawns, collecting fallen leaves, sign and send greeting cards for Easter and Christmas. "

- Did you go from house to house, offering your services?

"Yes, I did it in Canada and Kentucky. I was brought up by women, the mother had to pay the bills herself. We all contributed. Therefore, the work is so important to me."

- And what did you do with the accumulated money?

"As far as I can remember, I wanted to ride a motorcycle and racing cars. I wanted to play on them all sorts of jumps and other tricks. Every birthday, I would like to receive as a gift only a motorcycle. When I turned 12, I bought it for myself."

- How difficult is it to learn to do somersaults on a motorcycle in 12 years?

"It is very difficult (laughs). I am also one that is not taught. Many times I broke up because I love to drive fast. And all sorts of other tricks done. When we lived in Canada, I was doing gymnastics and usually did a somersault, jumping straight from the roof. I found the highest point on the roof and tried to figure, before landing in a snowdrift. "

- You were still the fruit!

"Yes, (laughs). I usually invited to such representations neighborhood kids and my sisters. Sisters have always said the same words: "Tommy, you break the death, and the mother will kill you!" Of course, I broke the legs and the nose" .

- In addition to broken limbs, what was the outcome of your experiments?

"I learned that even in tough times you have a choice - to allow circumstances to take the upper hand over you, or to defeat them by yourself. My choice - learn to cope with them."

- It has some relation to those tricks that you perform in the movies?

"I always train very hard. In order for the "Last Samurai" wield a sword and do it in rough terrain and it does not dislocate my knee, I trained for a year for six hours, seven days a week. Same thing I do for the "Rock of ages" - five hours a day learning to sing and three hours - to dance. "

- Did you know that you can sing of "Rock of ages"?

"I knew I could hold a note. I sang in clubs when I was 14, and in the choir in high school. But I never took voice lessons. Nobody ever taught me how to use my voice."

- How do you develop a voice for singing in stadiums?

"This man was an opera singer, and he taught me how to control my voice. This is similar to the mastery of an unfamiliar sport, or getting used to the new role. I had to figure out how to pass air through the vocal cords and in what place in the chest and head to direct it. These need to perform exercises daily to strengthen my voice. "

- The first song you sang before a crowd was Pour Some Sugar on Me, and the musicians of the group Def Leppard were on a set and watching you. Feel the pressure?

"Yes, (laughs)."

- Your character is hard to take seriously. It is ridiculously dissolute, and his only friend - a baboon.

"He's a slave of rock 'n' roll. When he was on stage, he gives it the whole himself. Beyond its emotional relationship he is looking pretty strange ways, and here begins the comedy."

A year ago, Barbra Streisand wanted to play in the film version of the musical "Gypsy," but its author, Arthur Lorents did not want to see actress in his own creation. After the death of Lorents much has changed, and now Universal launches movie with Streisand, who will produce Joel Silver. Already hired a screenwriter for the project.

Among the works of Arthur Lorents are the musical "West Side Story" and the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope". His musical I Can Get It for You Wholesale debuted on Broadway 19-year-old Barbra Streisand, immediately becoming a star.

The premiere of "Gypsy" was held on Broadway in 1959. Many critics still consider it one of the best American musicals. Moreover, the theater critic The New York Times, Frank Rich saw "Gypsy," the American response to British musical "King Lear."

At the heart of the musical are the memoirs of burlesque queen Gypsy Rose Lee, but the plot is given a lot of time relations of the heroine with his mother Rose, whose name has become the archetype of the mother in show business. Have the power and intolerant Rose have two daughters, Louise and June, which the mother pushes the scene. Together they travel through the States of the 1920s, and eventually the shy Louise becomes a star of burlesque, and no longer requires excessive care of the mother.

After the premiere of the musical in Broadway history of the mother and daughter turned into a feature film "Gypsy", which played an assertive mother, Rosalind Russell and Louise - who died tragically in 1981, Natalie Wood. For her performance as Rose in the 1993 television movie based on the musical "Gypsy," Bette Midler was awarded the "Golden Globe".
The modern version of "Gypsy," writes winner of "Oscar" for the script of the drama "Gosford Park" by Julian Fellowes. He is the author of the popular British series "Downton Abbey," as he reworked the play Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" for the same movie Carlo Karleya.

Barbra Streisand has long dreamed of playing Rose on the big screen, so that her dream is gradually coming true. For producer Joel Silver's work on "Gypsy" the musical will be the first of his career. Recall that on producer account are such actions as "Lethal Weapon," "The Matrix" and "Sherlock Holmes."

Streisand returned to films after a long break due to the comedy "Meet Fockers." This year, the actress will be seen as the mother of the hero Seth Rogen in the comedy "My mother curse."

Despite the news on the participation of Christian Bale in the new project of Terrence Malick, the actor stressed that will decide with his next film only after the fall, when finished shooting the thriller "The Dark Knight Rises". Bail will not stay without work – in his plans at least five films, including remake of "Oldboy" Spike Lee.

Work on the final film of the trilogy by Christopher Nolan on Batman will end in November this year. Consequently, to the shooting of the new project the actor will start until January 2012. Let's see what is in the plans of Christian Bale.

Perhaps the most interesting of all is a remake of the Korean crime drama "Oldboy." Director will be Spike Lee, and Christian Bale may be in the role of villain. It was rumored that Lee wants to see in the film Josh Brolin, but to date the vacancy is open to a major role.

Bail can flop in a lighter genre and play in the musical "Star Is Born." And let it is also a remake, it will be filmed by director Clint Eastwood himself. Apparently, Leonardo DiCaprio, look for the title role, is no longer interested in the film, but the female leading role is attached to Beyonce Knowles.

Michael Mann in April, said about the desire to shoot the painting in the style of "Treasure of Sierra Madre." The project entitled "Gold" can join Christian Bale and Mann starred in his "Public Enemies." Note that in addition to "Gold", Mann has a work to do: in his plans are a gangster saga "Big Tuna" and the historical drama "Agincourt" about the British archers who fought on the side of the French in 1415.

Bail can also play in a film "Out of the Furnace" from the director of "Crazy Heart" Scott Cooper. Cooper is now rewriting the script of the famous "Black List". The action will unfold in Indiana in 1986. The main character, coming out of prison, wants to marry his friend, but instead of a peaceful life again drawn into a world of crime, holding investigate the murder of his brother.

And finally, this summer it was reported that Darren Aronofsky wants to see Christian Bale in the role of Noah in his eponymous epic about the creator of the ark. To date, there is no any news about "Noah", but Aronofsky will take up his duties as chairman of the Venice Film Festival jury soon.
To the project of Zack Snyder "Last Photo" actor is no longer relevant.

Next year you will see Bale in "The 13 women of Nanking" and, of course, in the form of Bruce Wayne.
