Paramount is preparing the third “G.I. Joe”
After the first rolling weekend “G. I. Joe: Retaliation” has gathered $ 132 million worldwide, the studio Paramount, gleefully rubbing their hands and announced the launch of the third film franchise.
It is worth recalling that the movie was released in 2009 and earned 302 million worldwide box office with a budget of 175. The decision to continue the picture was taken as much summer of 2010, and the director's chair was going to take Stephen Sommers, who shot the first film.
General, the history of producing of both "G.I. Joe" stands separate story. Just before the release of the first tape was talk about disagreements of Sommers and producers, and the test-shows of the action gathered the lowest scores in the history of Paramount. This allegedly led to the dismissal of Stephen Sommers and his removal from further work on the film. Subsequently, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura denied the rumors.
Still, the second film was given the green light. But Sommers refused to take a picture. The director has become Jon M. Chu ("Step Up 2: The Streets" and "Step Up 3D”). The main project star has become Dwayne Johnson, who agreed to star in the sequel to the summer of 2011. The other members of the team came soon: Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Bruce Willis as the first soldier Joe and one D. J. Cothron, who was to replace Channing Tatum in the form of a young and handsome hero.
At the heart of the franchise is a series of games, produced by Hasbro.
According to the plot of the sequel Tatum died in the beginning. When the film was finished, the ill-fated test views showed that viewers are not enough Channing participation: for as long as the film was shot, the actor managed to gain additional popularity. And on May 24 the 2012, just a month before the start of ""G.I. Joe"" at world release, Paramount decided to postpone the release for 9 months and to shoot several scenes with Tatum, converting tape into 3D.
"G.I. Joe 2" cost the studio $ 130 million, that is cheaper than the original film. Analysts predict a project about 410 million in worldwide box office, that is a hundred more than the film's predecessor.
Not yet assigned the writers, not yet reported, who will be in the director's chair, and who will return from the original line-up, but you can say one thing: "G.I. Joe" will be shot in 3D.
Warner will present the real “Argo”
Fantastic band, appearing in the Oscar-winning project of Ben Affleck "Argo" will see the light. It will be called the "Lord of Light”, like the novel by Roger Zelazny, a famous script writer, who saved the lives of several Americans in the late 1970s.
Recall that, according to recently declassified CIA documents, in 1979, science fiction script called "Argo" was allegedly put into production. About this project wrote only Hollywood publication Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. However, the picture has not seen the light, as it has become a cover for the CIA special operations agent Tony Mendez to extract six U.S. diplomats who have appeared in the Canadian ambassador's house during the seizure of the Embassy by Iranian students in Tehran.
The situation in reality was somewhat different from those shown in the film of Affleck. If you take only the Hollywood component, then it was out the producer, which in the "Argo" brilliantly played by Alan Arkin. In fact, a fake movie run with two make-up artists, one of whom was John Chambers (in the film portrayed by John Goodman).
"Lord of Light" by Roger Zelazny, which became the basis of Barry Ira Heller scenario, was written in 1967. In the story after the death of the Earth the crew of the ship "Star of India" founded a colony on a planet in another star system. Having won almost all the original inhabitants of the planet, the crew is building a city on one of the poles of the planet. During the colonization of the planet people achieve technological power and immortality, and declare themselves gods. The colonists are divided into two parts: the gods who live in the heavenly city, and on the technical benefits, and ordinary people, strongly pushed around deities and living in the medieval cities on the planet. Develops celestial hierarchy in the image of the Hindu pantheon of deities.
Geller’s scenario was a part of an ambitious project "Science Fiction Land”, which was conceived as the first amusement park with elements of sci-fi. Geller enlisted the support of a number of science fiction, including Ray Bradbury, and the legendary artist Jack Kirby, who thought the visual solution. That was the art-concept of "Science fiction land."
After Chambers showed Mendez scenario of Geller, CIA decided that the name "Lord of Light" is not appropriate, and changed it to "Argo". Make-up artist joined to the project his colleague Robert Sidell, who worked on "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial".
After painting of Affleck received the "Oscar" for Best Picture in 2012, the studio Warner has decided to buy Heller’s script and run it in production. Presumably work on the existing scenario is still the same Chris Terry, who wrote the "Argo".
Note that, in contrast to the false "Argo", the new film will be called "Lord of Light" and will become more similar to Zelazny novel rather than a parody of the "Star Wars", as it was presented in the film of Affleck. Negotiations are underway with the Kirby family about the possibility of the use of his drawings in the new incarnation of the "Lord of Light."
“Avatar” will be shot under the water
Producer Jon Landau said that filming sequel to "Avatar" by James Cameron will be held not only on land, but under water. Motion capture technology has not yet been used in the water, so Cameron will be a pioneer in this field again.
"We have kept a team of experts on digital technology of "Avatar" to see how to shoot underwater with motion capture, - says Landau. - We have turned the simulation of water, but it is impossible to simulate the behavior of the actors. So we will do motion capture in the pool. "
In essence, the process is still the same: the camera will record the signals from reflective markers on the actors' costumes. That's just before that no one did.
At the same time Jon Landau denied rumors that Cameron went down into the Mariana Trench for material for the sequel of "Avatar." "He is a researcher! Of course, he was shooting a lot, but it is not connected with "Avatar".
The producer says the use of the latest technologies in the work on "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3", but what about the high frame rate (HFR)? Cameron has repeatedly referred to the opportunity to work with this standard, first tested on Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: Unexpected Journey". "HFR better for the viewer - says Landau. - But no one should dictate directors, at what frame rate to make a film - 24, 48 or 60 frames per second. "
Landau was weighed a lot of compliments to the work of Jackson, but notes the difference between movies. ""The Hobbit"- another movie with a different history and a different tone, and Peter has chosen the right creative solution for that he must be respected."
While we are talking only about the format 3D. And then the producer is sure to continue to shoot "Avatar" in stereo.
Among other innovations, the continuation of "Avatar" will get a new sound system, developed by Cameron and Landau's Lightstorm Entertainment studio in Manhattan Beach. However, the producer recalls that attention is not to focus on the special effects, and the story, "The audience comes to the cinema not for a new technology, and for the emotional component of history."
Steven Soderbergh delayed his retirement from the movie
Reporting on his retirement from the cinema, Steven Soderbergh did not specify that he will stay on TV. Completed the picture "Behind the candelabra" for HBO channel, director will take up the classic novel by John Barth "The Sot-Weed Factor" and make a TV series.
Bart's book, written in 1960, is the debut work of a writer in the genre of post-modernism.
"The Sot-Weed Factor" - a satirical epic of the colonization of Maryland, the effect of which is developed in the late XVII century. The novel is based on the life of poet Ebenezer Cooke, who wrote the poem "The Sot-Weed Factor." Bart Cooke - a poet and a virgin, an innocent young man who moved from London to Maryland, where inherits his father's farm of tobacco. He is trying to write an epic poem, but gradually sinking into a satire.
Soderbergh promised to leave the cinema and start painting and writing books. But soon the director has staged two musicals in the theater (one based on the movie "Super Mike", the other - the rock musical "Cleopatra"). To these have been added and more long-standing project of director, the film adaptation of "The Sot-Weed Factor."
About the desire to make a film, based on the novel of Bart, Soderbergh told long ago. In 2010, the director said that the movie does not work, most likely, "The Sot-Weed Factor" will be a mini TV series. And so it happened. The project is spread over 12 episodes, but what channel will be taken to assist the director, is not known.
"I think I figured out a way to shoot it cheap - said Stephen in an interview. - I don’t want to shoot a 12-hour comedy for $ 85 million, the effect of which develops in the XVII century. And I started to think about how to change it. "
Rather, Soderbergh has found a way to take action in our time - the only way, which greatly reduce the cost of production.
“Iron Man 3″ made in China
Global film market is becoming increasingly important to Hollywood studios, so you can not be surprised at the appearance of special versions of movies, rewired for display in a particular country. For example, China will show a very different "Iron Man 3", rather than in the United States or Europe.
The third part of the franchise follows the adventures of billionaire superhero Tony Stark rolled in China by DMG Entertainment, not Disney, as all over the world. Chinese rental laws for foreign films have been recently eased, but Hollywood is trying to stake out a place for a blockbuster in China cinemas by all means.
Marvel and DMG could not declare the "Iron Man 3" co-production, but instead added some plot elements for Chinese products. In both versions of Shane Black movie, it will be made in China in December last year with the lead actor Wang Xueqi. However, in contrast to the U.S. and international versions, the Chinese audience will see the extra frames and popular actress Fan Binbin, recently approved by the picture of Bryan Singer "X-Men: Days of future past."
Earlier in China prevailed strict quotas on the percentage of foreign films at the box office (up to 20 films a year.) The film passes a strict censorship, and Hollywood studios receive 13% of the fees - it is two times less than the average.
Thus, the Chinese version of "Iron Man 3" will serve as a collection rarity, which will hunt for film fans around the world. However, this is not the first time that Hollywood movie is changed for release in China. Suffice it to recall a version of "Looper", which were added some captured frames in Shanghai, as well as the upcoming "Transformers 4", which will be partly shot in China.
For the sake of friendly relations with the country whose market rent is one of the leading world producers of "Elusive" has completely changed the partially exposed film. In a remake of the film "Red Sunset" first aggressor was listed as China, but it was replaced by the North Korea.
Crowdfunding: a revolution in the movie?
Recently, we often witness the disastrous failures of movies. And it's not just about the film projects worth hundreds of millions, but even movies with modest budgets. May be it is time to stop cutting budgets of entire genres and attempts to save money, but to adopt some new business model that directly appeals to the viewer? For example, crowdfunding.
For those who are not familiar with the concept of "people's funding," briefly explain its essence. Imagine the kind of web site by logging on which absolutely anyone can leave a detailed description of the project and the exact amount required by a certain date. If the idea is supported by the others, they are using one of the popular payment systems to transfer money. Everyone decides by himself how much he is going to give. If by that date the final amount will be collected, the author of the project can get it and spend, followed up by the report. If the amount is not collected, the project is not well served support, and funds are returned to investors.
To say that cinematography is not familiar with this notion will be not true. For example, in 2012, in this way, David Fincher has collected the necessary funds to continue the work on the animated film "Bandit" who has not interested the major Hollywood film studios. Likewise, in March 2013 were collected money to finance the filming of the full-length version of the popular series "Veronica Mars." And if in case the project of Fincher it was about 400 thousand dollars, so here donations were in millions.
So. What if even the most ambitious movies will begin with crowdfunding? Say, well before the start of filming of the next big-budget film, the studio offers potential viewers to vote for it with their money. Of course, we are not talking about the formation of the entire production budget, which now can be up to two hundred million dollars, but only part of it. Say, one-tenth.
Thus, the basis for any decisions on large-scale investments will be based not on abstract ambitions of unnamed film company managers, who are concerned primarily about holes in the financial statements, and a very real audience's request, expressed in completely tangible form.
This scouting all the more important in a situation where the share of international box office is steadily increasing. According to the size of donations can be with the help of simple mathematical calculation to present the film and the estimated return to a particular region of the world.
Naturally, the donation should not be gratuitous. If now, in the era of "wild crowdfunding" investors receive only souvenirs with symbols of the project and other bonuses depending on the amount, in the future should be provided a clear bonus system.
Wong Kar-Wai sands love message to martial arts
Elegy "Yi dai zong shi" of Wong Kar-Wai opened the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival. The picture was a real long-term project of director - it took 6 years to design and three years to shoot. But the wait was worth it. Director and the main stars of the picture Zhang Ziyi and Tony Leung Chu Wai presented to journalists their new creation.
The last film of Wong Kar-Wai was released at the big screen in 2007, when "My Blueberry Nights" opened the Cannes Film Festival. On the French Riviera director appeared much more frequently than in the German capital. Among the projects of Kar Wai, were "Happy Together" (the prize for Best Director), "Mood for Love", "2046" and above English-language debut.
"Great Masters" (Yi dai zong shi) are considered the biographical film about Ip Man, the legendary practitioner of martial arts, a representative of the style of wine-chun, a teacher of Bruce Lee. But from the very first frame it's clear that before us is not familiar to all tape from the category of "born-learned-married." Tony Leung Chu Wai, the mascot of Kar-Wai, in a white hat and a long black coat in the pouring rain easily deal with crowds of "experts of Kung Fu."
The action begins in 1936, when Ip Man was already 40 years old. Before this age he did not work and did not need anything ("My parents were so rich and famous, that in the district Foshan was named a street after them"). He married the beautiful aristocrat, lover of music, often went to the "Golden Pavilion", the brothel for the rich ones of this world. But the place with golden walls was also a gathering place for the masters of Kung Fu. Foshan was the center of the southern Chinese martial arts during the Republic of China.
When, in 1936, Japan won the north-eastern provinces of China, the great master Baosen Ghosn, head of the martial arts world in the north, arrived in Foshan. In the "Golden Pavilion" should be held a ceremony in honor of the departure from the post of Gon. Old master fights with young fighters, the best of which is the Ip Man. Daughter of Gon ( Zhang Ziyi) also arrives in Foshan. She's the one who knows the deadly technique of 64 hands. This style will experience Ip Man, but the fight with the girl turns into an elegant and sensual dance. In the end, all the movies of Kar-Wai are about love.
This is only a two-hour tie of the movie, which in the first version of the assembly lasted four hours, but in China it was shown for 2 hours 13 minutes. To cut the ribbon for the international distribution Kar-Wai has decided recently.
The history of Ip Man interested Wong Kar-Wai in 1996. Kar-Wai decided that will tell a story of martial arts of 1911-1949 period, which was a difficult time for China. Director has plunged into research questions and talked with many of the masters of Kung Fu. "You know what surprised me? They are extremely simple and humble people. " This discovery helped the director to build the line and atmosphere of the film. The main thing in "Great masters" - not the biography of Ip Man, although, of course, it is a great place, and a sense of calm and concentration that is required for understanding of martial arts.
It is known that the shooting of the "Great Masters" interrupted for a long time due to financial problems, and because of serious injury of Tony Leung Chu Wai.
Director so enthusiastically talked about the project, that no one was left in doubt: Kar-wai was able to realize his dream. And what was the biggest challenge during the process? "I do not practice kung-fu" - said director.
Katherine Heigl and Patrick Wilson discover “North of Hell”
Black comedy "North of Hell” will be the next project with Katherine Heigl. The last movie with the actress – “One for the Money" - gathered in the world only 36 million with a budget of 40. Movie business does not forgive failure, but sometimes gives a second chance. Along with Heigl in the film is involved Patrick Wilson.
Heigl career actually began in the TV series "Grey's Anatomy," from which she retired, when she decided to really go for the big screen. Katherine had previously roles in feature films, but the fame has brought Judd Apatow comedy "Knocked Up," where she starred with Seth Rogen. Heigl later expressed regret about her involvement in the project of Apatow, which greatly angered the director.
First rolling luck of Katherine Heigl was the romantic comedy "27 Dresses" (budget - 30 million), which brought in $ 160 million worldwide. Ensuing film "The Ugly Truth", has collected and even more, 205 million, bringing the glory to the actress.
However, recent projects of Heigl can not boast of large fees. "Killers", shot over 75 million, fell short in worldwide box office, even up to 100 million, and "One for the money", which was put on top of the franchise detective-lover Stephanie Plum, and does collected a total of 36 million.
The new project with Katherine Heigl develops film company Darko Entertainment. Patrick Wilson plays a successful businessman who has not only acquired by hard-earned money, but also possessed woman (Heigl), controlling every step in the life of her husband.
Shooting "North of Hell" will begin in Louisiana in April. Director is Anthony Burns, which has no significant achievements in Hollywood.
Katherine Heigl in the spring of this year can be seen in the comedy "The Big Wedding." Patrick Wilson, noticed in fiction "Prometheus", starred in the horror sequel "Astral", and this summer will appear in the horror film "The Conjuring."
Kate Mara is going to star in “Transcendence” with Johnny Depp
Oscar-winning directorial debut of operator Wally Pfister continues casting in his new movie “Transcendence." A role in the project has gotten Kate Mara. Johnny Depp was the first actor in the approved project, and most recently joined Paul Bettany and Rebecca Hall.
The script for “Transcendence” is from the pen of Jack Paglia and originally was in a "black list" of best non made scenarios.
Although the plot is not officially announced, it is believed that it will tell about a scientist (Depp), whose mind before his death has managed to load into a supercomputer. In the scenario, there are only two female roles, and, as suggested by the blog Playlist, Rebecca Hall will play the wife of Johnny Depp's character, while Kate Mara won the role of terrorist, a member of the small group.
It is likely that the script for a long time has been changed, so that all the talks about who will play whom, should be considered only predictions.
Kate Mara recently starred in David Fincher's producer project - the TV series "House of Cards." The actress was seen in the TV series "American horror story" and in the film "127 Hours," "The Iron Knight" and "Blackbird." Kate soon will overtake for fame her younger sister Rooney, who starred in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."
It is interesting that Kate Mara was one of the contenders for the role of Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's film "The Dark Knight: The Legend Continues."
Shooting " Transcendence " will begin in April and will be held in Los Angeles. Studio Warner planned to premiere on April 25, 2014.
Hollywood is looking for a new Snake Plissken
A week ago it was reported that producer Joel Silver will reboot movie of John Carpenter "Escape from New York", now we have some news of the casting. According to insiders, for the role of Snake Plissken are tried two steep Britons.
The role, first played by Kurt Russell in two films, tried Gerard Butler. However, since then has passed a lot of time. A remake of "Escape" with Butler was conceived in the studio New Line in the summer of 2007. Then, in the director's chair was planning to settle Len Wiseman.
In 2011, New Line, having tried different options, rejected setting a new version of the film, and two years later the option to shoot reboot acquired Joel Silver. The Company of producer Silver Pictures will work on a painting in collaboration with the French conglomerate Studio Canal.
Restart should provide start of a new trilogy, with the first film will tell the story of the origin of Snake Plissken. But who will play the one-eyed hero?
As reported by insiders, the main contenders for the role of Jason Plissken are Jason Statham and Tom Hardy. Studio Canal is determined to sign the actor for the role of the snake before the summer. Then the project can be safely sold at the Cannes Film Market.
Statham has long been stuck in quite the same type of action movies, but soon comes the crime drama "Calibri", where the actor will be working not only with his fists, but also to show his dramatic talents. Jason appears in the action movie "Fast and Furious 6". The plans of the star of "The Transporter" is a remake of the film "Anger" in 1986, where he played the role previously held Burt Reynolds.
As for Tom Hardy, the actor is now occupied by a couple dozen projects. It is important to remember that in the filmography of the actor is already a very symbolic role, Hardy starred in a new version of "Mad Max", which embodies the on-screen character, made famous Mel Gibson. In essence, Tom has already has a franchise on the famous movie in his hands. Does he need another one?
