In his interview Chris Meladandri, said that the ability to make a cartoon about the villain, which would be his main hero, was the main driving idea of the project.
- Chris, "Despicable Me" - is an adult movie or a child?
I hope that we have created a cartoon for all. It is, of course, there are only children's themes, such as love changes people, there are many children's humor, a lot of gigs - responsible for them funny little minions. But at the same time, the theme of family, foster children, what it is all to be a parent, is very close to ourselves, the people who made the film and who have their families. So it is for children and adults. Anyway, I hope viewers of all ages will like this cartoon.
- You said that Gru was originally conceived as a villain-hero. But if you dig deep enough, it turns out that he is like a big child who hasn't played enough, and who generally grew up not very happy...
Yes, Gru - a character who grew up not knowing what love is. He has a strict mother, who, though, and wanted better for him, but never expressed any feelings or approval. So as he grows older, the scope of his accomplishments, but deep inside he wants his mother praised him.
- His opponent Vector is very similar to him.
Well, he was dissolute and corrupt bully who is actually also looking for support and encouragement of his father. He's the same reason, trying to become the greatest villain. Vector - a child who grew up in no needs, so he has the coolest gadgets, the steepest weapons, the coolest spaceships, he is young, but what is more terrible he is also and nerd.
- And why does he look like Bill Gates?
Ha-ha! We did not think it so special. I think it just a coincidence.
- That is, it turns out that he looks like the average nerd?
Do not want to say this, but I cannot disagree with you here.
- The movie has very unusual stylistic decision - just such a mixture of futuristic and retro. How did you come to this?
For this we should thank to our directors Pierre Couffo and Chris Renaud, who worked with amazingly talented designer, Eric Jonah. And the way the film looks almost completely is his individual style, which just felt the impact and Futurism, and at the same time, tender love for retro details. Before, I have never worked with a picture in which the design would be an independent work of art. We all looked at the work of Eric and said: "You just do this picture does not change anything." And here was just then problem in not to finalize anything, but keep the original Jonah ideas at numerous stages of production, which make the film visually unique. When your readers will watch a movie, let them know that all the design pieces - this is, in essence, the artistic voice of Eric Jonah.
On days, in the world box office started an animated cartoon "Despicable Me" - the history of the unlucky villain Gru, intending to consolidate the status of the main supervillain on planet, despite the younger competitors in the face of Vector. Being a child I dreamed of becoming an astronaut in the future, I think that many people dreamed about it, and when I saw the "Titan: A. E." I was in seventh heaven, by the fact that before this I did not see cartoons about space and space ships.
"Titan: A.E." - hand-drawn animation and computer graphics in some places, with the ideal complement each other. I liked colors, can be seen that the artists were trying not to repeat. The plot also not let us down, not annoying and you look at one breath.
In the distant future of humanity, deprived of the Earth, forced to settle on the outskirts of the universe and to endure the harassment from other intelligent races. The only thing that can save our descendants from the gradual extinction - "Titan", the space Noah's Ark, able to create re-create the Earth and all its inhabitants. The catch is that nobody knows the exact location of "Titan". No one, except Kayl, who has a map, and a whole pack of enemies trying to get to the Titan before earthlings.
"Titan" - a dynamic, well-cut story, charming characters and excellent musical accompaniment. And, of course, beautiful animation - and now, and many years later, the picture will become just as lively and colorful, for the classic is not affected by time. Of course, there is a positive protagonist, a little naive, but the bold and adventurous, there are villains, and no one (in fact on the Ark of the pair), but this cartoon, unlike many of its brethren, is not straightforward, and the spiral of intrigue, twisted in several exciting turns.
In this story a little of everything: love, universal values, the craving for adventure and noble deeds, loyalty and sacrifice. And in a sense, "Titan" - the eternal theme of the confrontation of children and fathers, where the role of the latter was not malicious Dredge, and Corso and above all they represent a real threat to Kayl and his team.
There is no popular now parodied moments, no stupid fun and farcical ease, concomitant modern Hollywood media animation. But there is an interesting story about the death of mankind and the search of the lost spaceship, which can save people there are living heroes, there are lyrical episodes, and finally there is a beautiful painted picture. A chase scene of ships among the ice meteorites is in general beyond praise, I even admired. In general, a worthy representative of drawn animation!
"Titan" does not pose any intimate knowledge and opens new horizons, but it's a snug, attractive cartoon, and watch it is for the sake of the beautiful hand-drawn pictures, especially the part that unfolds in the Andal ice ring, dark and surprisingly lovely at one time.
The first pancake, released by a new animation studio Illumination Entertainment under the direction of Chris Meledandri, is far not lumpy. "Despicable Me" earned in the first rolling weekend 56 million dollars only at home, so do not be surprised: continuing adventures of villain Gru are already in development. Three years ago, Universal Studios bosses persuaded Chris Meledandri leave the post of President of 20th Century Fox Animation and set up his own studio to produce cartoons. Thus, under the wing of Universal has been Illumination Entertainment, through which the studio was able to snatch a piece of cake in a large market family films.
Writers of "Despicable Me" Cinco Paul and Ken Dauria are already working on a sequel. But not only will the history of Gru continue. Cute villain henchmen - Yellow giggling minions - will be the heroes of two separate short films.
In addition, the Illumination has a lot of other plans. 1 April 2011 the film "Hope" - where Russell Brand announced the Easter bunny. The cartoon will be a combination of feature films and animation. Then in the spring of 2012 will followed by a second screen adaptation of Dr. Syuss book "The Lorax". Illumination plans to introduce the world strange creatures by Ricky Jeyrveys took off on his cartoon book series Flanimals. The studio also involved in the development of the film "Where's Waldo?" and the animated version of "The Addams Family" by Tim Burton.
Illumination is going to increase the number of projects produced from one to two or three a year over the next few years.
Founder of Illumination Chris Meledandri accidentally got into the business of producing a family film. In his producer filmography can be found a number of feature films intended for adult audiences like "Swingers" with Christian Bale. The former head of Fox, Bill Mikenik nominated Meledandri to head of the animation studio, which resulted in the release of film "Titan: A.E." and "Anastasia." After Fox Animation has released "Ice Age", the name Meledandri finally became established in connection with a family cinema.
Few days ago I've watched new cartoon titled "Despicable Me". My thought is not bad! But let us see what thing journalists from Associated Press.
That is actually very pleasant to look at the picture, which belongs to a French animation studio, as well as the voices of the characters - the main of them are voiced by Steve Carell. It is interesting to follow the clumsy villain named Gro and marvel at the exquisitely cruel sense of humor. This, however, and end strengths of the film, because at the end he becomes like a mint candy - such as sticky and sweet and cloying. But the main shortcoming of 3D cartoon - is the lack of a good, intelligible plot, which becomes especially apparent if you compare it to, for example, "Toy Story 3" in particular and the production studio Pixar in general, where the story is paramount.
The film, however, begins promisingly enough. Directors serve Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, the writers - Ken Doriot and Cinco Paul (from a story by Sergio Pablos). The main villain, dense, slovenly, square traced uncle, with uncertain Eastern European accent and environmentally harmful car, contemplating a terrible - to steal the moon. That he needs to compete successfully with the Vector, another super villain (and how, all the villains in this movie!)
To steal device for reducing the moon to acceptable sizes belonging to Vector, Gro sends a trio of brave girls, to Vector home under the guise of merchant's cookies.
Naturally, the girls eventually melt the icy heart of the evil Gro, the more so that it gradually becomes clear that his villainy is a reaction to the vicious mother, who was heavily tilted against him in childhood.
In general, according cunning men of the AP, the movie is nothing special, just a cute little thing with obvious happy finale. They give it two and a half stars out of four possible, which is roughly equivalent to our foursome with minus five points.
Estimated ticket sales for the third film in the saga "Twilight" ("Eclipse") have today been revised downward for the second time in three days, although the vampire supposedly "love story" continues to attract a large number of lovers of mystical sappy melodramas.
The movie "Twilight. Saga. Eclipse" has earned about $ 82.5 million during the 4-day weekend in the U.S. on Independence Day, with the general taxes account for 175.3 million dollars since its release the film on Wednesday.
According to recent estimates, "Eclipse" lags behind its predecessor, "New Moon", about $ 4 million. Twilight. Saga: New Moon has earned $ 179 million for the first six days in November. The company Summit Entertainment, distributor of the film, hoping for a much larger numbers. On Saturday, it representatives predicted $ 106 million of fees for the first four days of the show and 6-day haul to
$ 199 million. Justifying the studio said that it was hard to predict what will be the indicators of the weekend, as the main audience of the film - young girls - was diverted festivities on July 4.
It is not clear, however, what is there to worry citizens. "Eclipse" in any event pay for itself, and not just because the film cost only $ 68 million guys from Summit Entertainment is also highly satisfied with the fact that more male viewers have come to the cinema to see the continuing adventures of teenage Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and the werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Men already make up about one-third of the audience, compared to twenty percent for "New Moon".
How much has collected the film around the world, excluding America, it's not yet clear. On Sunday Studio said that the film gained not less than $ 100 million in box office in 42 countries.
The champion number two of box offices was the family film "The Last Airbender", which has earned quite a lot despite the fact that it had received completely destroying critics. Screen adaptation of Nickelodeon cartoon series, directed by M. Night Shyamalan price of $ 150 million earned 53.2 million dollars for a 4-day period. Including debut Thursday, it total fee is 70.5 million dollars.
Pixar animated cartoon "Toy Story 3" - considered by many one of the best films of the year - has received over the past weekend, 42.2 million dollars with the total charges were $ 301 million dollars making it the third top cashed film of this year, after "Alice in Wonderland" ($ 334 million) and "Iron Man 2" ($ 308 million). In the world "Toys" has earned an extra 153.2 million.
Rounding out the top five of two films that were released over the weekend, and each of which has already managed to fall into two positions: "Grown Ups" by Adam Sandler with $ 26.5 million and "Knight and Day" with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz with a $ 14 million. Their final charges rose to
$85.1 million and 49.3 million respectively.
On the previous week the USA box offices have achieved a great results according to different reviews.
Animation studio Pixar is the eleventh time has hit eleven jackpot on American screens, having achieved its currently the biggest success continuation of "Toy Story."
For the premiere weekend of the third cartoon in the series has earned 110.3 million in 7,200 cinemas 4,025 theaters (27,385 dollars from the site), setting passing several notable records. The first in this list is taken from the sequel "Transformers" (109 million), the best result among all June primes, the next largest record sales the first day of rental for cartoons with 41.1 million against $ 37.6 million in "Shrek 3D". According to box office debut weekend of "The Great Escape" is the tenth largest in history.
60% of the total weekend cash had been received from 3,200 three-dimensional screens in 2,463 theaters, including the leading role played by 180 IMAX cinemas. The third "Toy Story" became the first Pixar project going on in this format, and cartoon characters have fully justified the trust placed in them. Gained for the premiere weekend sum of 8,4 million dollars has become a new record for animated films, leaving far behind the result of last year's "Monsters vs. Aliens" (5.1 million). "Our evening sessions were very good. With cartoons often happens that after six o'clock in the evening the audience simply disappears, but now it did not happen" - admired the head of IMAX Filmed Entertainment Greg Foster.
Higher ticket prices in IMAX 3D and added approximately $ 20 million to the box office weekend, though, on the other hand, we can only guess how many potential viewers were put off sharply risen in recent years the price at the box office cinema. At the same time, the share of revenue from 3D "The Great Escape" slightly below the previous representative of the genre "Shrek forever" (61%) and Disney movie "Alice in Wonderland" (71%). In recognition of the studios, the presence of other movies in theaters in 3D is not possible to reserve a maximum number of screens, and for this reason had to reach missing number of what was available.
Traditionally it was believed that the previous part of the "Toy Story" cartoon was based entirely on the family audience, this trend is largely obscure and now. Proportion of parents with children made up 67% of all visitors, 54% of viewers was younger than 25 years with equal proportions of both sexes.
At the international box office animation starts with the cashier in 44,8 million dollars in 25 territories, and have also established a number of records, twice or even more surpassing those found earlier Pixar releases.
To be continued...
What happens to the toys when the children grow up? The boy Andy is going to college - and his favorite cowboy Woody, Space Ranger Bazzlighter and all other his toys enter to the kindergarten.
But the life in kindergarten is far from sugar one and toys are sent to look for the old house to meet the exciting adventures and dangers.
"Toy Story: The Great Escape 3D" is the first famous trilogy made by Pixar studio and the same colorful, funny, cute and a good cartoon for the little ones.
"Toy Story" for "Pixar" is a landmark cartoon: it was with it in 1995 started the history of the studio. In 2009, the first and second parts of the cartoon gained a three-dimensional format and were re-released in theaters, anticipating the beginning of the third part and along the way introducing the smallest audience with the charming characters who are loved by their parents, when we were kids.
"Toy Story: The Great Escape" as the first two series is rather children's cartoon, but at the same time is very unusual, bright and funny. "The Great Escape" was originally made in 3D, using all the advantages of stereo to the maximum. The three-dimensional image gives the plastic heroes toys, life - and they "come alive" on the screen so truly that young viewers open their mouths.
Besides, the very history of the "Great Escape" is replete with action-moments and exciting events, among the three parts of "Toy Story" the new one is uniquely and the most dynamic and ambitious.
The team (or, better family?) of old character has been complemented by numerous new heroes. Here and charismatic teddy bear Lots and MegaPups, and dark blue octopus, and a cute little girl Bonnie, who will play a very important role in history, and a whole bunch of squealing nose running children in a kindergarten!
For adult there are stashed a lot of references to famous movies like "Matrix: Reloaded", and in dialogues between the lines "sewn" full of funny jokes. Sharpness that children do not understand very well entertains their parents during the whole cartoon watching. What is worth at least a romantic line Barbie and Ken, which is ridiculous flirting on screen or "Spanish regiem" of Bazzlayter that makes him hot Latin machos in the manner of Antonio Banderas heroes!
Like all Pixar cartoons in the new "Toy Story" there are great soundtracks. The sad story of the bear Lots and MegaPups makes them empathizes and makes understandable their bad deeds. As far as the audience favorite heroes - Woody, Bazzlayter and the rest of the box of toys Andy - they re-assert the value of friendship, courage, willingness to come to the aid and mutual support.
In general, "Toy Story: The Great Escape" - an excellent third part of a touching and unusual old cartoon from the "Pixar", which like the children and adults!
