With some difficulty to seek funding, the director goes to work and picks up the cast. Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, and this week the director has chosen nominee for the Oscar Amy Adams.
Filming begins in June. Adams won the role of the hero's wife Hoffman Lancaster Dodd, returning home after World War II. Having seen the horrors of war, he tries to find a new faith, and forms a new religious movement, gaining popularity in the 50's. Dodd's right hand will play Joaquin Phoenix. His character - a misguided young man, a former alcoholic, Freddie Sutton - first became champion of the new cult, but eventually begins to question the actions of his mentor.
His new film director of the "There will be blood" will shoot at the camera, with which Stanley Kubrick was working on "Space Odyssey". Unlike many of his colleagues, enthusiastic figure, Anderson is an adherent of the film is not going to change it.
The right to release a new film, Paul Thomas Anderson in the USA was acquired by the brothers Weinstein TWC.
Amy Adams in this year continues to be popular. Actress was going to appear in musical "Rock of ages", but she chose the offer from Zack Snyder and play Superman's girlfriend Lois Lane in his "Man of Steel." This year, Amy can be seen in the adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On the road", as well as in the family comedy "Muppets".
The new project from the director of "District 9" is still gaining stars. Neill Blomkamp will continue to work in the genre of fiction - the action of "Elysium" will develop in the future, in one hundred years. Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley and William Fichtner are already approved for the roles and now them has joined a star of "Predator" Alice Braga.
Whom, exactly, will play Brazilian actress, is not yet known. Moreover, the plot of "Elysium" is carefully concealed. It is known that, as in the "District", in the next movie of Blomkamp will open one of the social problems.
Matt Damon got the role of former prisoner, Jodie Foster headed alien race, but the villain will be Wagner Moura, the star from Jose Padilla novels "Tropa de Elite". Brazilian actor makes his debut in the English-language film, while his compatriot Alice Braga is prefigured in Hollywood. The last time Braga can be seen in "Repo Men" and "Predator" and in mystical thriller "The Rite".
In January of this year, Blomkamp persuaded the 77-year old artist Syd Mead's work on the design of his new movie. Mead had a hand in a number of films that have become classics in the genre of fiction, such as "Blade Runner", "Tron" and "Aliens." Get to work Mead is very hard: designer refuses virtually to all. But he fell in love "District 9", so that Blomkamp has managed to reach an agreement.
Release of "Elysium" in the U.S. is expected on March 1, 2013.
Ryan Reynolds in an interview with the resource Collider talked about the project "Green Lantern", what he knew about the original comic book up to this point and how to prepare for the role of Hal Jordan.
- Have you already given many interviews about this project?
No, not really. We presented the project at the exhibition Comic-Con, but it's quite private event.
- You have already starred in comic books, but agree that at this time, your hero is very much attractive and energetic.
I guess you're right. Perhaps this is the first movie which was filmed for my nephews and niece watched from the earliest days. The first thing my nephew asked me when I came to visit him: "Do you give me a ring? and I answered him: "Forget it!" (laughs). Do not want to sound sentimental, but this interest inspires great confidence in what you're doing.
- When you were considering the offer of the studio, how much you talked about your role and what you know about comics?
I had an idea about it, but, in general terms. Like, there has lived an ordinary guy, whom died alien has bequeathed a ring that shoots a laser. That’s all. I was shocked to discover what an enormous universe is involved in "Green Lantern ". On the role, Hal Jordan held a casting, as usual. I am slightly familiar with the world of comics: played in "Blade 3: Trinity" and the entire four minutes was Deadpool, in " X-Men: Wolverine". Overall, I was not sure, whether I would fit the role of a superhero or not. I just wanted to work with Martin Campbell, because I really like "Casino Royale" and some of his other films. We have met three times. At first tried to persuade me in the end I've beg my role. Then I was taken to the costume designers, and I saw all of their models, concept art, costumes, and was stunned. So it all started.
- Can you tell a bit about your character, Hal Jordan? He is an example of the classical hero. He is fearless and very confident. How to ensure that he looks like a hero, fearless, and at the same time does not ...
We had no goal of making him a fearless hero. ... Hal Jordan is the reason the ring has chosen him, that he is able to conquer fear. He was confused and did not understand why the choice fell on him. And he's afraid to admit that he is afraid of.... His struggle to overcome this fear continues throughout the film. He is looking for a fulcrum and tries to find the ability to defeat his fear. Precisely because of this he becomes the greatest of the green lights, because courage - this is madness. Courage - an amazing thing: it is noble, that they want to have all the advantage. In general, this virtue he tries to find within himself. In short, he's one of those guys who try to be fearless, but when we know him better, understand that he chose precisely the wrong way.
- What are your favorite books and movies in the genre of science fiction?
Uh ... number one – "Back to the Future." Next "Star Wars", the first three parts. What else? I like "Total Recall." Well, I do not know ... as a child I loved "Robocop." It seemed my super-duper movie. That is all at once come to my mind.
- Deadpool, Green Lantern, and now they say that you are going to participate in the project RIPD Why are comics more attractive for you than traditional movies?
I think they are attractive from the standpoint that now, with the development of new technologies and take them down has become much easier and they look spectacular as ever. "Green Lantern", for example, can’t be removed two years ago. As for the draft RIPD, I first read the script, and only then learned that it is comic. Not even a comic, graphic novel. In general, the script I really liked. I do not think that I deliberately chose a genre in which I decide to act.
From this week, the director place of the film adaptation of video game "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" is vacant. David O. Russell dropped out of the project due to creative differences. Sony will have to look for a new candidate for the post of director, as well as new writers.
Russell's decision came as a surprise, given how the director was interested in the project. It was expected that starring Mark Wahlberg and his company will make Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. Last December, David O. Russell said that the script to the movie is almost ready. In February, he excitedly told that he wanted to attract on the female lead role Scarlett Johansson, but he looked to the side for other films.
Among interested David projects was tape "The Silver Linings Playbook" where the lead role was going to play Mark Wahlberg. The film was in development since 2008. The protagonist, a former high school teacher who comes from a psychiatric hospital, where he spent the last four years, and moved to his mother. He will have to remake himself completely in order to be reunited with his wife. Wahlberg, long flirted with the project, signed in mid-May.
According to one version, Russell chose to shoot "The Silver Linings Playbook", where once again would remove the star of "Fighter". However, insiders say otherwise. The reason that Sony sold by the director, was his version of the script. Russell handed over 200 pages, teeming with characters that are absent in the original game.
The original script is written by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. Studio liked it, so most likely, their work will form the basis for a new script, the author of which is now being actively sought.
The game "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" was released in 2007. According to the plot in the coffin of the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake was found a mysterious key clue that leads to the treasures of El Dorado. Since then have passed over 400 years. But the adventurer and a descendant Sir Francis Nathan Drake decides to try his luck and goes on a journey. Point of destination - the coordinates in the Pacific Ocean, where they find all the forgotten island.
"Drake's Fortune" is not the first draft, which left David O. Russell. Last autumn, he declined the film adaptation of the novel "Pride and Prejudice and zombies," motivated his decision to a low budget film.
Two months ago, Darren Aronofsky refused to shoot sequel to "Wolverine" with Hugh Jackman. Since then the studio Fox continues to search a candidate for the director's chair of the project. Number of applicants down to eight people. Among them Doug Liman and Justin Lin.
The loudest name is Doug Liman. He shot the first part of the trilogy of Jason Bourne, in his account thriller "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," a fantasy "Jumper" and the political thriller "Fair Game" Lyman flirts simultaneously with several projects - from the film adaptation of "The Three Musketeers" to the filming manga "All You Need Is Kill".
James Mangold, proved his worth as a versatile director, took the romantic comedy "Kate & Leo" the drama "Girl, Interrupted", a mystical horror "Identification", biopic "Walk the Line" and western "Train to Hume." His action comedy "Knight and Day" deserved a better reception - the film has collected only 260 million in worldwide box office.
Justin Lin is famous by the franchise, "Fast and the Furious." Fifth film series has already collected in world box office more than 500 million dollars. It was assumed that Lin will stage the next "Terminator", but due to the freezing career of Arnold Schwarzenegger future continuation is uncertain.
Antoine Fuqua is known as the director of "Training day", which brought Oscar to Denzel Washington. Director made an upgraded version of the adventures of King Arthur's thriller "Shooter", but "Brooklyn police" did not become a hit. For a long time, Fuqua was trying to film the story of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.
Mark Romanek is not the best candidate for a major studio project. The director refused to remove "Wolverine", despite the fact that the project was already in full swing. Former clip maker Romanek is known for his drama "One Hour Photo", as well as atmospheric adaptation of the novel "Do not let me go". "Wolverine" can become a producer breakdown in a genre of thriller.
Jose Padilla made a name for the action movie "Elite Squad", which won the Golden Bear at Berlin Film Festival. If director will be approved to "Wolverine", then this will be the second project that Padilla will take from Darren Aronofsky - previously offered to withdraw Jose remake "Robocop", which has long been attached to Aronofsky.
Gavin O'Connor shot a police thriller "Pride and Glory", and this year he filmed the picture "Warrior", where on the ring will face two increasingly popular actors - Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton.
Gary Shore - the unknown name in the list. For him can speak a trailer for the film, the work of a young filmmaker. Its action is developing in Japan, as the action of "Wolverine." As far as we know, the project remained on trailer stage.
Rumors, wandered on the project "Oblivion", have been confirmed. Actor Tom Cruise will play a major role in the film, but instead refused from the film studio Disney the movie picked up the company Universal. The author of "Oblivion" is a music video director of the blockbuster "Throne: The Legacy" by Joseph Kosinski.
The original version of the script belongs to the author of "The Departed", William Monahan, but it overwrites the text of Karl Gaydusek. The basis for the film was a graphic novel, created by Kosinski, Arvid Nelson and Andrew Wallin.
Future. In the center of the story an ex-soldier named Jack. His path - fix aircraft, on them earthlings patrol the planet that has become uninhabitable.
One day the hero finds crashed spaceship, inside which there is a woman. As it turned out, she is an earthling, which has finally returned from a multi-year expedition to Mars. Her arrival raises serious questions, on which Jack is going to find answers.
Among the future projects of Tom Cruise's musical "Rock of ages" and the fourth series of the saga "Mission: Impossible." In 2010, on the large screens we saw a comedy "Night and Day" with the actor, which brought the world more than 260 million dollars with a budget of 117 million.
The provisional release date of "Oblivion" - 2012. Estimated budget of the film is 100 million dollars.
Director of one of the most anticipated projects of the summer 2011 "Super 8" JJ Abrams and actor Kyle Chandler gave an interview to the magazine PARADE.
- Why there is so much mystery around the "Super 8"?
Abrams: In the end, it's only for the benefit of viewers. I will try to hide everything that is possible to the end, so that viewers could enjoy the film in a cinema.
Chandler: The secrecy was all-important factor from the outset. I was not even allowed to read the script entirely, until I got to the set. I was carried to my trailer, and only then I finally enjoy it from beginning to the end. Before this point, I was aware only that relates directly to my character, and several scenes with his participation. I have explained in general terms, what movie would be and what my role is. On set there was talk that if you lose at least one page of your copy of the script, or you will discuss anything with anyone without permission, then you're the first in the queue, who fly here on a black helicopter without have markings that will not slow down immediately appear on the horizon.
- According to scenario, the film takes place in Ohio. You filmed in West Virginia. Why?
Abrams: Earlier, on the steel plant had worked twelve thousand men and now - one thousand one hundred. The city needs investments.
- The story of painting is in 1979.
Abrams: When shooting a film about a time warp, we just change the rhythm, we slowed, and the events cease to be as fast as in our time. We are forcing the viewer how to take things slow with us. You will feel that everything happens a little slower than you are now accustomed to. Well, I think you'll notice. And I did not want to get the film in which we are talking about the year 1979, and have the feelings - of 2011.
Chandler: In 1979 I was 14 years old, as much as my on-screen son. As soon as I walked into his room (on site), I immediately felt as though I'm back to my childhood. This house, this huge microwave oven, colors, chairs, linoleum - all reminded me of those years.
- JJ, you've worked with child actors playing major roles. Were there some surprises?
Abrams: Before the important scenes have a rest on a couple of days. I'm not kidding. The first few days were incredibly difficult, the children were frightened by the upcoming filming before losing momentum. Some of them haven’t seen the shooting area at all. I decided to start shooting scenes in which they were in the background, to give them time to adapt and integrate into the process. To be honest, the first two days were a nightmare.
- Kyle, how would you briefly describe the film?
Chandler: People ask me: "This is a movie about monsters? This is a film about aliens?" I stop and did not utter a word. I'll tell you this: This is a simple story and, at the same time, very difficult.
One of the most original competition films of the main program filmed by Denmark director. And it's not about "Melancholy" by Lars von Trier, but of "Drive" by Nicolas Winding Refn. Neonuar in the style of "Bullitt" and "Samurai" with Ryan Gosling in the lead role won the most critics. Nicholas and Ryan told how they met and how came the idea off this unusual action, appeared in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
Press conference on the film was full of expletives, does not shun any way the director. In the hall there was always laughter while watching a movie on during certain scenes was heard applause. While standing ovation at the end of the picture was not, during the title "Drive" after the press showing the audience applauded, not sparing the hands.
"Drive" has turned out like it’s and conceived Refn: viscous mixture of European art-house with the help of American actions, as well as with the addition of Asian cruelty. In this case, the main character looks like a Samurai - quiet, noble, and loyal to his master. Ryan Gosling, like Nicholas, did not believe it, that the producers allow them to remove such a film. Initially it was assumed that "Drive" will be a big Hollywood production. The driver offered the role of a nameless Hugh Jackman, the actor has long been attributed to the project. Then the studio-majors abandoned the idea to shoot a movie about a stuntman, Jackman was eliminated and in the material has interested Gosling – he has persuaded producer to call in the director's chair Danish choreographer.
At day, the driver works a stunt, but at night he earns money on taking the gangsters from crime places. He was silent, not saying too much, but masterfully controlled machine. Meet with a single mother Irene (Carey Mulligan) makes a pleasant break in his life. When Irene's husband has left jail, driver departs. However, his employer Shannon (Bryan Cranston) wants to put him on a real race. To do this he needs a good race car. Shannon appeals to wealthy friend Bernie (Albert Brooks) to invest money. Bernie agrees, but calls his friend Nino (Ron Perlman) to enter into share. Once the driver detected bleeding in the garage of Irene husband and Irene learns that a criminal past does not let him. The driver decides to help - and does it for nothing.
Music does play a huge role in the project. Usually, Refn has really unique approach to the selection of material. For example, he flatly refuses to use rock music, and insists on pop songs and melodies in the style of techno a la Kraftwerk. At the same cars were not the most important stuff - Refn admitted that he had no rights at all and he does not understand in cars.
"We simply chose the cars that look cooler!" – said director.
