2 big premiers of the past weekend: Resident Evil

The biggest project in the American box office over the weekend without a doubt became the fourth series of "Resident Evil", directed by Paul Anderson and supporting the three-dimensional format. Also, albeit in a limited release, American viewers can see clearly an exciting project "I'm still here" by Casey Affleck, telling us about amazing transformation of a famous Hollywood actor in the hip-hop star.

The picture, taken by Paul Anderson, left quite a curious chamber horror a la "Aliens", gathered a good harvest at the box and giving a life to a sequel, more oriented to action.
Anderson himself was not averse to a director to do the second series, as he has no free time, while the studio demanded a continuation of the banquet as soon as possible. Commercial "Resident Evil" was more successful than its predecessor.

Fresh released movie "Resident Evil: After death" continues to outline predecessors (which is not really surprising: writer and curator of the project as all the same Anderson). The authors do not shy talking about 3D as one of the merits of the film - and it must be noted, not without reason. Tape was originally filmed in three-dimensional format, and because the film is full of episodes and scenes, specially sharpened under 3D. With the screen in the auditorium flies a huge ax, and even with the stroke of the opening credits in the air, bucking a drop of blood.

American critics have smashed to smithereens the new movie. Competently done 3D - this is fine, but authors forgotten about further development of the plot.

"A good action - and really nothing else" - Jackie K. Cooper, jackiekcooper.com.

"The reason for viewing - perfect 3D. The reason for that not to see this movie - everything else"- Jeff Bayer, The Scorecard Review.

" After Death" is even more disappointing than the previous films, if only because the creators of each picture does not add anything new, except for non-original episodes, filmed in slow rhythm, bad play-acting and rambling storyline" - Wilson Morales , AOL Black Voices.

"In the end, though the film is not original and not clever, it is not so bad" - Jeffrey M. Anderson, Common Sense Media.

"A fool on the brink, but incredibly entertaining film" - Alex Zane, Sun Online.

"Dull, incoherent, chaotic film" - Dustin Putman, DustinPutman.com.

"Only for fans"- film critic Emanuel Levy.

New dimension of Resident evil

Every self-respecting cinemaddict at least once watched the first film from the series "Resident Evil", because it is already a classic of cinema.
And then came that glorious day when every self-respecting man will defend his time to new "Resident Evil-4" designed to break the stereotypes created by the first trilogy and produce something already familiar to all.

Creating a quarter of the stories about Alice and the boys, Anderson decided not to spend time getting to know the characters and bringing out their personalities as it was done in the earlier parts. Now his task was to complement them and to introduce new characters who will act in the next part of the new trilogy. For some this may seem a bad aspect, but for someone on the contrary good, because the fewer the characters talk about life and about themselves, the more time for exciting battles.

Recreated with the help of modern technology around world, or rather what has left after it, is so atmospheric and disturbingly grim, that really scared the opportunity of possible world changes.
Zombies and various methods of their extermination - the main that attracts the viewer and.

Fans of Zombie genre games will build a monument to Paul Anderson, who appeared at the same time as producer/director and screenwriter of the picture.

Concerning 3D, so it has betrayed the striking realism of everything going on and had to dodge from the bullet and from the largest ax, and even wipe the blood from the glasses.

Conclusion: "Resident Evil 4: Life after death" is not just a continuation of the universe transformation in entirely new form. Do not ask too many questions, to think who, where, how, why, and so on, there's no need. Resident Evil 4 is a movie created to entertain viewers. To understand the essence of what is going absolutely no need to play the original games, not necessarily even see the first of three films. It's entirely separate and independent work, which could otherwise not be perceived.
If you're a rabid fan of canon "Resident Evil", then just forget for a while about the original movie and the relationship with this movie, just enjoy the beautiful and spectacular sight, which is so rarely seen in our cinema in recent times.

Guillermo Del Toro Interview

Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro gave an Interview about his new project: "Do not be afraid of the Dark" and connection with the "Hobbit."

- Please tell us about your project "Do not be afraid of the dark". Do you like to scare small children?
"Yes, I like to scare small children and adults, too. Love this from my childhood".

- Small children are always afraid of everything. The main idea of your movie "Do not be afraid of the dark" is that something terrible is in your own home, and this is one of the biggest nightmares of every child. The fear many of us have moved from childhood to adulthood.
"What's funny is the idea of a blanket, which slides out of bed ... This is a classic moment of horror I felt as a child many times, but now has decided to abandon it. I suggested to the director Troy Nicci: "Let the little girl can find something in her bed under the sheets". You know, it's terrible. I think a large part of my imagination was formed when I was a kid, and now it enters into my films. I really like the idea that fear can return you to childhood and make vulnerable, susceptible to things, far from ordinary. "

- What exactly do you enchanted in the eponymous TV movie in 1973: the history itself or the way it was told?
"There is something really first-born in the tiny creatures, which for a small amount of extremely treacherous. This is not a gigantic monsters or werewolves, it's just a tiny soul, which is able to kill opponents of larger size. It hooked me.

- Can we talk a bit about what you've been doing lately and what will you do next? How is it difficult for you to give up "Hobbit"?
"It's very, very difficult. But I had no doubt why I did it, and I was convinced of the correctness of the decision taken by me in respect of myself and in respect of the project, by the way. I believe in it. My life, personal and creative, was full of plans, when it burst into "The Hobbit". But I beat to free up time to work on the film. You know that because of funding problems shooting postponed more than once and finally, the time has come when I had to deal not only with "Hobbit," but also other projects with which I was bound by contractual obligations. I could not give "Hobbit" a quarter of my attention, or half or three quarters. This film demanded of me 110% of my time and effort, which I couldn't give. I think then came a time when I made a difficult decision. "

- But you are still involved in the project as a writer?
"Yes, I'm co-authored the script. I cannot think or talk about "The Hobbit" in the past tense. I can talk about it only in the present. I have been involved in the creative process. Yes, I not a director and not entertain any illusions about this, but I'm a partner. I really want Peter Jackson shot the film himself. I fervently wish the film would be great, I work in a team and wish you all good luck.

- You said that your new film will be in 3D?
"Oh, yes. I am aware of the benefits of this technology and eager to try it in my next film. By the way, it will be shot in the genre of "good old horror movie".

Interview with Milla Jovovich concerning release of "Resident Evil: Afterlife"

- Milla, tell us please, the film "Resident Evil" - the last, or do you plan to continue to act in this franchise?
Oh, do not know yet. We work on each film like it would be the last. We invest in each one a lot of forces, soul and heart, and we would certainly like to shot the next part. But, you understand, everything here depends on the fans - if they want another movie, then we will make it. We have a lot of ideas for a next part, so you just need to wait, as the current movie pass. Actually from the very beginning we did not plan to do from the "Resident Evil" a little series, so every part of it - a special experience for us.

- Don't you tired from the ubiquitous and invincible Umbrella Corporation?
Not at all, I like it very much! It has already become a part of my life, I've been working with it for 10 years. (Laughs) In this sense, it has become for me almost a family member.

- Milla, but what special should wait fans from the fourth part of "Resident Evil"?
Well, first of all, they will see Vesker (played by Shawn Roberts), Chris Redfild (Wentworth Miller), there will be new machines, even steeper and more dangerous than before. There will be a lot very successful cross-referencing to the game at this film - truly awesome battle scenes. If you like "Resident Evil", then you can be sure that it is now better than ever.

- That is, as you said, we expect the exceptional and most entertaining action?
Well, this year - yes. In this part we tried to combine all our experience from the previous three installments. And if people like it, then we are ready to do the next part to start from scratch and do everything even steeper.

- And what does in the "Resident Evil" attract you most?
Oh, I have a very warm attitude to the "Resident Evil" 3d, because for me it has become a part of great flirt through which I developed my own family, while we like to do this project. I really hope that audiences will enjoy what we have done, and if you like, we are ready to do more.

- That means you like to be action-heroine
But I've always dreamed about it! I grew up on the "Thundercats", "She-re: Princess of Power", read "Dune", loved science fiction and fantasy, the same "Lord of the Rings", for example. So it goes, that all my life I was going to this, and action-heroine - certainly part of what I have.

- Milla, with what directors it was most pleasant to work with?
Well, it is difficult to say, I have worked with many directors ... Somewhere, of course, with Luc Besson was very pleasant, because the roles that I had played were great, and he is such an amazing director ... Of course, my husband (Paul W. Anderson)- with him also very pleasant. But, of course, I was getting married to two directors, and I think with them just had fun all the work. (Laughs)

“Piranhas 3D” review

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (No Ratings Yet)
Loading ... Loading ...

The earthquake caused a fault on the bottom of the lake, which was perched on the banks of a small American town. And from the fracture flooded thousands of bloodthirsty piranhas - disappeared with the rest of the world's two million years ago. Meanwhile, the lake youth satisfied with the regular annual "celebration of life" that local lovingly called "Tits Festival". But this time the show will be bloody ... On the screen is remarkable horror "Piranhas 3D" - combining modern technologies with horror stories in the spirit of the glorious 70's.

The striking thing: the nostalgic style of narration in the wrapper of stereo image takes the soul of perhaps more than meeting with "Expendables". Who would have thought, that with some emotion they would look today, movies, filmed on the patterns of "Jaws" and others!

The story is about the senior high school student who left his younger brother and sister and his mother-sheriff, for a yacht with girls in bikinis, seems like this plot has been standing for thirty years on the shelf.

The secret here, perhaps, lies in the details: intrigue in "Piranha" is not built in the modern style - a brief but exhaustive list of all the heroes, who then deftly assembled in one place - on the ill-fated lake. Director Alexander Azha doesn't rush events - they had escalates gradually and significantly, almost documentary, that at the end all the audience nervously squirmed in their chairs and tormented armrests, experiencing for their favorite heroes.

Or maybe the point is in the actors playing the old-fashioned fun: along with youngsters (Steven R. McQueen, Dina Meyer) in the "Piranha" played a great Elisabeth Shue (mother - the sheriff) and Christopher Lloyd (eccentric scientist - as from the trilogy "Back to the Future").

Whatever it was, Alexander Azha knows how to attract and retain our attention and literate script - an important but not the main ingredient in great movie "Piranhas 3D".

What does the audience want from the bloody horror film? More young naked bodies, and then - meat and blood! In this regard, "Piranha"  is a luxurious buffet breakfast. In the film there is a lot of nudity. Some roles were played by real pornographic actress. At this nudity in "Piranha" looks not matter: there is even a very beautiful and elegant swimming scene with two lovely naked nymphs.

"Meat" part didn'let us down too - the ancient piranhas gotten out of the fault at the bottom of the lake, looked and acted rather brutally. Attacks by packs of piranha are filmed rapidly and harshly - after all you will not want to go into any natural water. The bloody carnage that piranhas suit in the finals might be compared, perhaps, only with relish bloody porridge "Final Destination 2".

Of course, "Piranha" is not made in the technology of "Avatar" - 3D-effect here is a protrusion of some objects from the plane, in general. But when a flock of toothy fishes crashes into a crowd of bathers youths, voltage boosts and in this 3D-effect.

"Piranha" - is a simple method built movie. But in some places the film by Alexander Azha manages to look more intelligent and charming in genre where he operates.

Strong hint on continuation at the end of the film force us immediately start to wait for the next series. With projects like "Piranha" this doesn't happen too often - and this worth a lot.

Overview of U.S. box office (30.07-01.08)

Once again the third victory in the American box office went to the movie by Christopher Nolan. Only on Friday, 30 July, "Inception" gave way to lead a novice, which, however, did not prevent to achieve the final victory over the weekend. In the third weekend the release of fi thriller has lost 35,7% of its results a week ago and earned 27.5 million dollars, bringing the total cash to the impressive amount of 193.3 million dollars. Conquest of the 200 millionth milestone is going to be on Tuesday, a 19-day release. Thus, the "Inception" adhered to "Avatar", "Alice in Wonderland" and "Shrek forever", which also won three times in the course of the year. Remarkably, all these movies came out in 3D, and latest projects with such achievement in the 2D-format were "Dark Knight" and "Tropic Thunder" in July-August 2008.

With its new success "Inception" has risen to the seventh line on the charts this year, beating a Sunday cartoon "Despicable Me". Nearly two hundred IMAX cinemas have provided 3.4 million dollars of fresh revenue and 22 million dollars for the entire release period.

At the international box office for the first time the picture came out the winner, earning $ 55 million in 47 territories over the weekend with the general insurer in 171.5 million dollars (364.8 million worldwide).

Better than others among the trio of debutants made comedy "Dinner for Schmucks", which on Friday for one day, even managed to lead movie release chart. However, on second place in the weekend's ambitions paintings Jay Roach is not stretched, but here all the main competitors are left far behind.

The absence of major comedy projects for adult visitors over the past few weeks clearly played into the hands seem relatively good result to "Schmucks", although relatively high estimated 68 million budget film makes payback is not an easy task. The resulting revenue amounted to 23.5 million dollars for a session in 3 400 cinemas looks like the same result of "Funny People" a year ago. Previous movie Steve Carell "Date night" earned on the starting three-day 25.2 million dollars in April, remaining at the box to date with the current insurer in 98.5 million dollars.

Audience of "Dinner for Schmucks" by 55% consisted of male viewers, 54% of visitors sessions were over 25 years.

Spy thriller "Salt" held second weekend in full accordance with the traditions of the genre, having lost 46% of eligible earnings debut. 110 millionth picture with Angelina Jolie in the title role earned 19.5 million dollars for a three-day and with 71 million after ten days of release will get approximately 110-120 million of final charges. At the international box office spy video will also become the third with 24.5 million dollars for the weekend (total 32.8 million).

A romantic drama "Charlie St. Cloud" very vigorously launched on Friday, but, like many other well-focused on the fair sex films, deposited rapidly in the course of the weekend. Over the three-day movie with Zac Efron starring has gathered 12.4 million dollars in 2,718 theaters (4555 dollars per each cinema), with 45% of amount had been received on the first day of release.

Compared with other like-genre movies this one significantly has exceeded revenues debut, "Remember Me" this spring and only slightly smaller than walking past summer films "My Sister's Keeper".

For summer movie with a focus on drama the result itself turned out pretty good and generally corresponded to approximately pre-launch projections. 79% of the audience of "Charlie St. Cloud" were women, 58% were younger than 25 years.

Overview of U.S. box office (30.07-01.08)

Utter failure suffered the most expensive of the new recruits of reporting weekend - created for family audience sequel to "Cats & Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore". Accompanied by a major advertising support from movie studios Warner Bros. and its marketing partners, the 85 millionth video will managed somehow scrape together enough pitiful revenue of 12.3 million dollars in 5,200 cinemas and 3,705 theaters (3314 dollars per each cinema). This incredibly weak result is simply amazing, especially when you consider that 2,170 schools have shown a film on one or more three dimensional screens with all the consequences in the form of increased public attention and higher prices for tickets.

Never before had a major release in 3D is not collected at the start so little, especially with such a huge number of cinemas and screens. Released in rent to the Independence Day holiday, nine years ago, the original film earned 21.7 million USD for the three-day and 35.8 million for the first five days of release.

Final charges 93.4 million dollars in U.S. box office and more than 200 million dollars in the world have been recognized, of course, a positive result, but the time for a potential sequel was irretrievably lost. In nine years, not much memorable than decent fees, reel of film in 2001 was simply forgotten, no need to continue to commit was not felt, and the bulk of its audience has long been out of the age of the target audience.

Besides, a genre of family films with talking animals rarely gives success in cash terms of sequels, example of what became "Stuart Little 2", "Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed" and "Garfield 2". According to the number of sold tickets "Revenge of Kitty Galore" yielded approximately three times the original films, as unconditional surrender, and before which appeared in last year's "Darwin's Mission", the result is a time served as the main reference point for it. Studio reaction on such an obvious failure was entirely predictable.

"It's very frustrating - said at the outcome of the weekend head of distribution Warner Bros. Dan Fellman. - I was hoping that the result will be even close to the 20 millionth mark".

Representatives of other competing studios, among the possible causes extremely low fees is called a three-dimensional format, as many potential viewers could choose to refrain from costly campaign in the movie on proposed rather second-rate product.
At the same time the Warner Bros. totally rejects such assumptions, arguing that in most cinemas had a choice between conventional and three-dimensional format. According to distributors, the share of three-dimensional screens had 55% of the total fund weekend, 54% of the audience belonged to the male sex, while 46% - younger than 18 years.

The family comedy "Ramona and Beezus" shedding 53% of its revenue debut and finished 11th place with 3.71 million dollars for the weekend. Following ten days of release 15 millionth picture on a series of popular children's books in the U.S. has collected 16.4 million dollars and can conclude with near 25-million mark.

Three films started promisingly enough in limited theaters. The clear leader in this company was a comedy "Get low", starring Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray, who has collected 88,2 thousand dollars in two theaters in New York and two in Los Angeles with a best result of the weekend at an average revenue from the site (22,046 dollars).
The French film "Concert" has been released in one cinema in the same cities, earning 20,1 thousand dollars for a three-day (10 050 with the institution). In a very similar situation comedy has launched the "Extra Man" with John C Reilly, Paul Dano, Kevin Klein and Katie Holmes, in an asset which is 18,9 thousand dollars for the first three days of release (9431 dollar theater).
At next week's clash with the "Inception" and the rest of the rent will come two new releases. Here is a favorite of police comedy "The Other Guys" with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, released in 3400 cinemas. In no small audience can expect as a dance drama "Step Up 3D", which try their hand at a three-dimensional format on the screen of 2,200 cinemas.

JJ Abrams: “I knew how to catch Spielberg on the hook”

At a press conference during the Comic-Con, held recently in San Diego, director JJ Abrams talked about the new "secret" project "Super 8" and about what kind of work once he did for Steven Spielberg.

- You grew up shooting your films with Super 8 cameras. Also you've adored works by Steven Spielberg from childhood. Now you are going to shoot the film "Super 8" with Steven Spielberg. Is this a pure coincidence?

Dreams come true. It's very wonderful story. When I was 16 years old, Matt Reeves and I ... Matt -  director of "Monster", and together we took off series "Felicity." So, we were with Matt at the festival Super 8 in Los Angeles, and LA Times wrote about us an article.
The next day we called Steven Spielberg's assistant, it was Kathleen Kennedy then, and she said: "Steven began shooting when he was the same age as you and his earlier films break down: pieces of the film peels off. Well, guys are you ready for their restoration?" We say: "Well, newspapers write about us, so perhaps we could fix film for a Spielberg." She: "Well, then we will send you a courier."
So, we brought two films: "Escape to Nowhere" and "Firelight" which Spielberg shot in childhood. And it was ... the original film. There were no copies. And at the end of each movie it was written: "Written and directed by Steven Spielberg."

I said: "Matt, we should take a couple of frames. We just must". And he said: "No, no, we can't do that. They know that the films are with us!" In general, we do not steal. Well, okay, one of the unsuccessful thefts of my childhood (laughs).

We have restored these films. They were filmed on a normal 8-mm film, not the Super 8-mm. We had to scrape the damaged pieces and glue them back. But what we enjoyed watching these early film Spielberg, it was crazy, inspiring feats on the feeling.

I did not have the slightest idea why it happened, that the work entrusted to us. This seemed like a joke. Is there somewhere in the studio Universal Pictures solid company dedicated to the restoration of the Steven Spielberg film, shot in his childhood?

"In short, when us paid 300 bucks for the work, I realized why they have chosen us (laughs).

In any case, years later ... it happened a couple of years ago ... I called Steven and said: "I have an idea for a film entitled "Super8". And I was able to intrigue him. He was delighted. I knew how to catch him on the hook, because, while working on those two of his films, I realized what he felt when shooting them in a childhood.

- What can you tell us about this project? Or it is too early to talk about something?

You are right, too early. I would be glad to show you the material, but we have not taken off. With regard to this project, I love to represent that when someone goes to the cinema and see a trailer for our film, he will say: "Oh, my God, look awesome", and not even realize who is in the lead roles. We begin filming in September.

- And what is your collaboration with Spielberg?

It's unbelievable. It is really unreal. Genre of the movie is that it is impossible to work with Steven, without referring constantly to his past work, and try not to look at this silly admirer of his work. But it was incredibly interesting, and Steven was very courteous. The film, I think, will be filmed in the spirit of those pictures that Steven did for film production company Amblin Entertainment in recent years.

In general, the dream becomes a reality. I could not imagine that I would work on something so personal. The film is not an autobiography, but it would appear quite a lot of personal moments.

-  Will the "Super 8" filmed in 3D format?

No (laughs).

“The truth is not what you know. It’s what you believe”

European movies can be a good entertaining and exciting. There is something extraordinary, sensual in European films that Hollywood has, unfortunately, lost in the pursuit of the box office. "Ondine" by Nil Gordan is just such a film, a series of low-budget, but such sincere and emotional, entraining not 3D or high-quality special effects, and the old-fashioned interesting plot and decent acting.

The entire film slides on the brink of a fairy tale and reality, fiction and truth, the fairy tale about a fisherman, fished in the sea a very unusual catch, and the true story of a former alcoholic and a failed father, who is caught up in everyday life and troubles. Which of these two stories is the primary? This question is not answered.

The viewer decides believe it or not, is it true or fiction, fairy tale or a lie. And there's a beautiful girl, sea siren, rescue fisherman from death. Who is she really a mermaid or a runaway? Throughout the movie I made several radical changes in response to this question. And in other matters what's the difference ... If you so want to believe in a fairy tale, believe, as a little girl. All the wonderful and marvelous (c).

The film is very beautiful. Blue-green colors, seascapes, Ireland, the coast - unbelievable. Its such a feeling that you are in the water, all around in the water, you feel the cool drops of water in your face ... well shot movie. The plot is intriguing, too. Very much like a fairy tale beginning. But as the development of more and more realize what's what, and plunged into a reality. Illusion at the beginning - though in the end. The unexpected finale.

Colin Farrell is simply stunning. Yet again, amazed at his talent and charisma. Alicja Bachleda-Tsurush also coped remarkably, although I see her first, but she definitely has talent.

Sound for the film is really magic. Sigur Ros - forever! Unusual film, an unusual story with an unexpected outcome!

P.s. Those who still remain in ignorance, and rack their brains concerning director, I open the map, it is talented person, whose record includes such pictures as "Interview with the Vampire," "Breakfast on Pluto". He also holds an Oscar for his screenplay "The Crying Game", where he was director. In this film, he is also a screenwriter and director, he can show us how city views, and create the right atmosphere going on.
