2010 comes to an end, and we can sum up its preliminary results. Without a doubt, this year the total fees of Hollywood films in North America once again overcome a cherished mark of 10 billion dollars. The most successful projects are already known.
This is the "Toy Story 3" and "Alice in Wonderland" earned in worldwide box office for more than a billion dollars each. Closer to this result can still seventh part of "Harry Potter" and "Tron: legacy." But who has remained an outsider?
The loudest failure of the year, of course, was the film "Jonah Hex”. Being based on very cinematic and advanced materials, it nonetheless was able to earn at the box office only a quarter of its modest, by Hollywood standards, budget of 47 million dollars.
Slightly more successful was the drama "Extraordinary Measures" with Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser. The film is about the good doctor who tries to help the protagonist to save his children, did not cause much sympathy from the audience, and as a result of its global box office receipts barely exceeded 50 percent of 30-million budget.
Oddly, but in third place on the list was a fantastic movie "Repo Men," in which Jude Law and Oscar winner Forest Whitaker played the role of non-core anti-heroes, knocked out of the citizens paid for artificial organs. The film, whose potential was estimated as high enough before the premiere, earned at the box office only $18 million, that is covered 56 percent of its budget.
Going further, we have "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World". To predict the failure of this film, which is based on the popular comic book, it was virtually impossible, too great was the army of fans awaiting the film adaptation. But nevertheless, it happened. Painting hardly scraped together worldwide $46 million after failing to return 60 millionth production investments to creators.
And closes the top five - comedy "Furry Vengeance" with the same Brendan Fraser. Nature, rebelled against the greed of an enterprising businessman, worked better than others, allowing creators of the movie to earn $35 million at exactly the same budget.
Naturally, to assess the real effectiveness of certain film it should be taken into account the cost of its promotion, which sometimes make up half the production budget. In this light, the status of above mentioned films looks more pitiable.
A lot of movies released by Hollywood studios in 2010 and claimed the title of a blockbuster, could be recouped only through international release. This is the story of "Robin Hood", on the creation of which Ridley Scott somehow has managed to spend $ 200 million. The film grossed in U.S. theaters only half that amount, another 206 million picture earned through complacency foreign viewers. No better things were with the new creation of Zack Snyder's "Legends of the Guardians". With 80-million budget an animated fairy tale has failed in the U.S. box office, and only at the expense of its international duties slightly exceeded 100 million. And so on.
There is still a long and intense award season, whose results are still difficult to predict, because the number of really quality films in the past year was unusually high.
Well, then we are all waiting for that director Jon Favreau poetically called the "bloodbath." In 2011, we will be able to see a record number of potential hits, most of which have been filmed in 3D format. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2", "Transformers 3: The Other Side of the Moon", "Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides", "Green Lantern", "Thor", "The First Avenger: Captain America", "Rise of the Apes", "X-Men: First Class", "Super 8", "Kung Fu Panda 2" and many others.
Director of prequel movie "The Thing" Matthijs van Hejiningen in an interview with Shock Till You Drop resource has spoke about the impact that had on his work an original movie by John Carpenter (1982).
- How did you become the director of this project? You fought for it, or the studio itself offered you this position?
"I was preparing to shoot a picture "Army of the Dead" which was produced by Zack Snyder. For the three months before shooting the crisis broke out, everything fell apart and I stayed out of work. I sat in the car and thought: "Oh God, I need to re-read a bunch of scripts. That would have to find something like my favorite, "Alien" and "The Thing". Then I phoned my agent and asked him whether there is any news on "The Thing". He said: "Yes, Strike Entertainment has some ideas." I did not know it would be a prequel or sequel, but I’ve met with representatives of the studio, and they gave me to read the script. I liked it, and I said: "If you want to shoot a prequel to the film by John Carpenter, it must conform to him." As a viewer, you know who or what is something, but the main feature of the original film is that you do not have a clue about it, that is, you start paranoia. And yet, I said that in the movie should be filmed the real Norwegians. You know, this is ridiculous, if the Americans suddenly start pretending Norwegians. The studio agreed with me, here's how it started. "
- Do you remember your feelings after seeing "The Thing"?
"Oh, yes. I watched it at the cinema and it blew my mind! The end of the movie was so dark, and it was pleasant to me. Now I'm really trying to boost the same feelings in the audience after watching our film."
- How did Americans make their way into your story?
"Well, one of our main characters - the Norwegian who works in New York. When he was asked to help, he comes to the station with his team and his two assistants - the Americans. In general so artful way the Americans made their way to the station. "
- Most of the actors, who starred in your movie, are from Norway, and they had never worked in such big-scale projects. How do they cope with this task, and one more, do you speak Norwegian?
"No (laughs). Norwegian, of course, like the Dutch, and our cultures have much in common. I found the person that you rarely see on the screen, and I think it adds credibility to our pattern. I worked a bit with the guys over their images otherwise they would be either blurred or deliberately. With all the actors it was very nice to work. "
- What kind of other movies, except for “The Thing” in 1982, has inspired you to progress?
"Alien", it is for me the standard in the horror genre. The way it was filmed, actors, the appearance of monsters in the frame ... All these moments I keep in mind. This movie and "The Thing" - are two of my favorite horror films, they are both a source of inspiration for me."
- It so happened that your first work in cinema - the expected event of "The Thing" fans, and given them a legitimate interest in the film, which turned out at you, are you willing to meet with them face to face?
"Oh, no (laughs). You know, I love that movie, and that when I was offered the director position, I agreed without hesitation. And I’ve tried as I could and stayed true to myself and my feelings."
- How do you think, what moments in the film fans care about most of all? What issues are you ready to hear from them?
"Well, I guess, that the monsters look different, not as they could be..."
New tape by Coen brothers' “True grit” will open Berlinale 2011. The film will be shown during the non-competitive program. This movie is a new adaptation of the book by Charles Portis, had already incarnated on screen by Henry Hathaway. In the center of the story the young Mattie Ross, seeking the killers of his father. Her companion is an assistant county sheriff (marshal) named Rooster Cogburn. In the film of Coens will act Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.

"True grit" not so long ago was awarded by the American National Board of Review of the ten best films of 2010.
Berlinale 2011 will take place from 10 to 20 February.
1). The star of "social networking" Jesse Eisenberg began his career in cinema with roles in independent tapes. Despite the success of "Zombieland" and David Fincher's film, actor doesn’t intend to leave this niche. Along with Jess Veyksler he will act in the film “Free Samples”, reports The Wrap.
The heroine of the story Veyksler expelled from law school and forced to work in the trailer supply, which reluctantly handing out free samples of ice cream. 2). Casting a new "Spiderman" by Mark Webb is clearly coming to an end. TV actor Chris Zylka has been approved as a performer of the role of Eugene "Flash" Thompson - star of high school football team, who constantly teased Peter Parker.
It is noteworthy that at the same time, Thompson was a big fan of Spider-Man, by himself, even remotely with no inkling about what is actually the identity of a superhero. As a result, Thompson entered the military service and passed the Vietnam War. In what way this character and Spider-Man repeatedly crossed. In general, the cast restarted "Spiderman" is as follows: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Julianne Nicholson, Sally Field, Irffan Khan and Annie Periss.
Filming began in December in Los Angeles, the film's release date - July 3, 2012.
- Darren, tell us about your first meeting with Natalie 10 years ago, during which you first talked to her this movie.
Darren Aronofsky: I've been a fan of Natalie since I saw her in "Leon". Luc Besson - one of my favorite directors. It turned out that the manager of Natalie is my old friend from college, so meeting with her I got in through connections. In general, we met up, drank a cup of disgusting coffee, and I shared with Natalie ideas relating to the film. She said then that the entire movie is filmed in my mind that it was an absolute lie.
Natalie Portman: No, it was not: what he described to me then, very similar to our "Black Swan."
- Natalie, why did you want to get this role?
Portman: Up to 12 years, I studied ballet and, like most girls, idealized it, and felt the most beautiful art form. Expression without words. I've always wanted to do a film with a similar theme, and when Darren shared with me his incredible idea that concerns not only the world of ballet, but also implied the establishment of such complex and interesting way - or two images - it was just a rare chance, especially with such director as Darren, for whom I agree on that whatever.
- Darren, did you have any difficulty in presenting this story with a female point of view, as opposed to "Wrestler," which was entirely male?
Aronofsky: I do not think there's a big difference. I'm not making a serious problem of this. It does not matter whether this is an aging wrestler over fifty at sunset of his career, or an ambitious twenty-with-something-year-old ballerina. If they are truthful and show their true face, the audience will perceive and believe them. The cinema has always promised it. Therefore, we can go to a movie about a seven-year girl from Iran or the immortal Superman of America. Until then, while the characters do not lie, who they are - it does not matter.
- Natalie, how did you prepare for the role?
Portman: It was a great test, and, fortunately, close people have given me tremendous support. All teachers and coaches, choreographers and director, first of all, helped me to overcome this way. I started training for a year before filming, and my teacher started with the basics. First six months we trained two hours a day, so I became stronger physically and more confident in my movements. The next six months we were engaged for five hours a day. In parallel, we have added a swimming and I swam for a mile a day. Two months later, we added choreography, and weight training has increased to eight hours.
Physical discipline was very helpful in shaping the image of my character, emotionally, because such a monastic way of life is inherent in the dancers. You do not drink alcohol, do not hang down with your friends, do not actually eat, your body is constantly exposed to the incredible pain. All this helps to understand all the anguish, on which dancers doom themselves.
- What did you eat primarily at the end of filming?
Portman: Pasta. For breakfast, lunch and dinner. I ate all the time.
Aronofsky: This movie was very difficult to film. It was not enough money, and we'll stop shooting repeatedly. I'm not really worried about this, because it meant that I have received an additional two to three weeks for something to make ends meet. Only recently I learned that Natalie screamed at her manager because of what she had to live on carrots and almonds three extra weeks. She is the one, who suffered from constant malnutrition.
- Darren, how do you think what will be the reaction of the representatives of this art for your movie?
Aronofsky: I think many dancers felt great relief at the thought that finally it was shot the film in which the ballet is shown as a serious art rather than as a backdrop for a love affairs. If you try to look at such famous ballets like "Sleeping Beauty" and "Romeo and Juliet," "Swan Lake" it will be understood that those works are rather dark and gothic. This movie could be called "Swan Lake". We were founded upon a fairy-tale story and ballet, and moved all the characters in our film, which takes place today.
It turned out that we just moved the "Swan Lake" with a modern twist. From our film, we get a complete picture of how is it difficult the life of ballerina, but I think we just show the beauty and grandeur of this art. Of course, there will be people who don’t like something in the picture, however, most of the dancers with whom I have met and discussed our film, said: "Finally we have a real movie about ballet."
Studio Universal Pictures has confirmed: a historical epic about samurai, which will be the feature debut of Carl Rinsch, will be released in 3D. Major role in the movie "47 Ronin", as stated earlier, will perform Keanu Reeves.
The actor has confirmed his participation in the tape in December of 2008, after which the project was about a year in search of the director, which at the result became Ridley Scott's son in law. It is assumed that Reeves embodies one of the samurai, which together with his comrades will revenge for the death of their killed boss. The main plot of the movie is a true story that happened in the early 18th century and tells about a group of Ronin - the so-called warriors in Japan, which didn’t safe from the death their patron. A similar story is very popular in the land of the rising sun and repeatedly incarnated national cinema - the last time in 1994.
American version of the film script was written by Chris Morgan, who worked on the texts to action games "Wanted" and fourth "Fast and the Furious." The new "47 Ronin" will likely become stylized, rather than meticulous transmission of real events, and will include elements of fantasy a la "Lord of the Rings" and the alternate bloody battle scenes in the spirit of "Gladiator" and "300."
Currently director’s group is looking for location to start filming.
Release of the film is scheduled for November 21, 2012.
Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron and a star of "Social network" Ermey Hammer are talking with Warner about their participation in the next movie project of Hollywood veteran Clint Eastwood. The main character in the biographical drama "J.Edgar" odious leader of the FBI will play Leonardo DiCaprio.
For Charlize Theron there is a role of Helen Gandhi, who at age 21 was the personal secretary of the head Justice Department Bureau. Gandhi worked for the J. Edgar Hoover for 54 years, and being devoted to many personal secrets of his boss, she was able to keep her mouth shut.
Ermey Hammer also asked to play Clyde Tolson - Deputy Director of the FBI, which reportedly attributed the close relationship with the boss.
Hoover was the first head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, being in office for nearly half a century, until his death in 1972. Ambiguous and contradictory personality, which many accused of abuse of office, he is responsible for the introduction of innovative technologies in police work (the laboratory of Forensic Medicine, centralized database of fingerprints) that are used to this day.
Scenario of biopic about Hoover has been written by Dustin Lance Black, whose adaptation of Harvey Milk story has taken an "Oscar" in 2009.
The filming of this tape will start at the beginning of next year. The project will be the first experience of cooperation between Clint Eastwood and Leonardo DiCaprio.
In the Metro City there is an eternal struggle in classic scenario: a cute genius Evil against blunt fistic Good. Evil - blue-skinned beard dude Megamind with a huge head - always comes up with intricate mechanisms, which are at a crucial moment fail. But once he is able to destroy superhero Macho-Man, and then ... the villain will be boring! And it would have ended very badly, if mega-villain didn’t fall in love. Studio Dreamworks Animation has created a new animated blockbuster "Megamind" - about feelings that we are moved by.
Charming Megamind is more like a hooligan Tony Stark in "Iron Man" than the real evil - he is a genius, has a weakness for beautiful young ladies and not a fool to have fun. And he demolishes the building is not out of malice, but purely out of boredom.
There two more reasons to compare Megamind with the Iron Man. First - as in the case of Tony Stark, Megamind surprisingly easy won audience hearts, he doesn’t walk the long beaten path, but represents something new and different in terms of cartoon stories.
Secondly, under the rocker fad of cartoon there was picked an excellent soundtrack. Exiting the cinema hall, you want immediately download onto your player those timeless hits, accompanying Megamind.
As with all extraordinarily talented cartoons (Dreamworks and Pixar), in "Megamind" there is also an elegant and subtly taught philosophy and ethics. This time the theme began calling and factors that affect it. From the words of the hero Kurt Russell, David Ames in another great film about feelings and emotional trauma, "Vanilla Sky":"We are driven by the five senses, David. So what brings you here, which of the five? Guilt? Revenge? Shame? Hate? ... Love?".
Megamind, of course, will transform the love. But, what is the charm of modern Hollywood cartoons and their differences from the same Hollywood movies - watch this transfiguration is not boring, but exciting and fun. In the cartoon, heroes can afford to be flippant: forget for a while about his love and passion - and with a head go away in the sparkling battle with the wicked!
Moreover, action and destruction in “Megamind” have been shown greatly. Excellent 3D provides necessary scale and texture tricks.
In sum, we must say that Dreamworks Animation pleased this year as never before. Joining the distinguished confrontation with the studio Pixar, Dreamworks began to create adult cartoons - in which ideas are more profound and long-lasting than any happy childhood. First came "How to Train Your Dragon" – a real "Avatar" for small children, then a fourth "Shrek" - cartoon "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" about golden section of relationship.
And now we have been presented "Megamind" - a stylish blue rooster, which history explains everything important about his childhood and destiny, choice and vocation, love, physical appearance and inner essence. He showed us the best in recent years cartoon apocalypse, and yet - even with the mega-brain, the main thing - all the same that holds the friendship, love and laughter!
1). Spaniard Rodrigo Cortez, who shot tight thriller "Buried alive", is already working on his new project. The film will be called “Red Lights” with starring Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver.
Red Lights - the history of parapsychology (Weaver), whose study of the paranormal led her to a famous psychic (De Niro) and a number of exciting discoveries. The hero of Robert De Niro, is an honorable man, he returned to his occupation after 30 years, and the heroine Weaver tries to shake his reputation. Shooting will begin in February next year and will be held in Spain.
The director says his film will be about "how the brain does not show the true picture of reality." Cortes himself wrote the screenplay and is listed in the producer of this independent project.
2). Director of "Basic Instinct" returns to his sweet heart erotica. Paul Verhoeven put the mystery novel “Eternal”, which will be similar to the "Fatal Attraction", are just a seductress becomes representative of the underworld.
The script written by David Locker, composed, among other things thriller "Obsessed." He came to the project of Verhoeven instructed to rewrite an existing script D'Ovidio Richard and worked on "Exit Wounds" and "Thirteen Ghosts".
According to the story the protagonist, who is married alcoholic, rescues a woman who wants to jump off the bridge. They are in bed, where roughly spend their time, after which he returns home where his wife is waiting for him, the private detective and a bunch of pictures on the table. Man thinks that fell, but the pictures he did not in the arms of a fatal beauty, and the company's bottles.
The hero begins to doubt the presence of sound mind, has not yet come to the conclusion that his temptress - a ghost, that hunger to get his soul. Budget of the film oscillates between 10 and 25 million dollars.
Filming "Eternal" will begin next summer.
Known primarily for her role in the popular series "House MD" Olivia Wilde is ready to conquer the big screen with her participation in the film "Butter", "Cowboys and Aliens" and "Change-up." In an interview with ComingSoon actress talked about her work in fiction blockbuster "Throne: The Legacy," in which she plays the Quarry, fellow friend of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges).
- Please tell us about Quarry and Kevin Flynn relationship.
"Kevin Flynn has taken Quarry under his wing. Almost being Flynn daughter, Quarry is also his eyes and ears on the playing stage, since he can no longer leave their safe haven. On the one hand, she is his protector, on the other - a student. They had spent with each other in "throne" hundreds of years. All it requires knowledge about the culture of Members she had received from Flynn. He created a huge library for teaching. She totally lost her head from the world of users. Human history. Human literature. All about the world. Sun, which she is interested. She asks Flynn: "Tell me about the sun." Their teacher-student relations are permeated by mutual love, so when Flynn's son Sam arrived on the field, she immediately feels responsible for him and sympathize with him. "
- Tell us, how have you plunged into a universe of video games?
"It was unbelievable. When I saw the preview trailer, teaser, which is demonstrated at the show Comic-Con in San Diego three years ago, I got some idea of the world which wanted to create Joe Kosinski. Austere landscape, shiny black surface and lights. I thought it was a really fun way to update the original "Tron". Imagine it again without causing damage to the contents and ideas. So, during our first meeting with Joe and Sean Bailey, they showed me this teaser, and I thought it was probably the coolest thing I've ever seen. This happened six or seven months before we started to work. We had well-designed movie sets. "
- You became a fan of the game after such a deep dive into its world?
"Definitely, I became a fan of the players and their talents. Before, I somehow never thought about how many there are various gaming communities, now I know. As a child, I of course, playing video games, but honestly, the last game I remember was "Duck Hunt". Technology changes so fast, I just fell out of the process. I'm busy right now filming the movie "The Cowboys and Aliens." All involved in the movie, just crazy about the game "Red Dead Redemption", and Daniel Craig among them. I also tried, but for me it is unreal. Video games have come to such level, that I can’t master them now. In general, I feel an enormous respect for people who understand them. "
- So, what do you think about the video game "Tron: Evolution"?
"I really liked what happened. We will meet with the Quarry at an early age. I did not recreate her screen image: during the game we find out who she was, when the game has just begun. In general, it is an attempt to come up with her again, and I'm glad I had done a great job, related to her past. And as it turned out, it was very helpful. "
