James Franco interview
James Franco, starring in the drama of Danny Boyle "127 hours" based on real events, gave a brief interview to the resource The Hollywood Reporter, in which he spoke about the peculiarities of shooting and expressed his attitude toward to masturbation.
- How did you prepare to shoot scenes in which there is an amputation of hands?
We shot this scene, just like any other "active" episodes. It was like a model in the early stages of work. In one of the first scenes my hand was wedged between two boulders, and I tried to free it. Before cameras were switched, Danny Boyle said: "I'll switch on the camera now, and you do everything as you do." I replied: "OK". Danny said that the scene lasted 22 minutes. I was exhausted, my arms and shoulders were purple, and only after that Danny was satisfied. In general, this scene has become a model of what he wanted from me in the future.
- And what was before you cut your hand off?
The same. I had an artificial arm, just like this, with muscles, veins and nerve endings, so I could only, following a script, begin to chop off her. We had a new digital Camera SR2K, connected to computers with cables, so operator had only to hold little cameras. Through these little cameras we can capture material which is inaccessible to usual portable camera. They allow you to shoot very long doubles. These long doubles by Danny shredded mercilessly, but his short cutting could not be more accurately demonstrates the authenticity of what is happening.
- Danny said that Aron Ralston, screen prototype of which you are playing, would have never answered the question of whether he masturbated when he realized that he was crushed by a stone for a long time. Does the fact that this episode was included in the film add a reality to what happens?
Well, he's a kind of gentleman, I think about such things he does not speak loudy. (laughs). And, perhaps, he did not want his mother read about it somewhere."
- But you have had to represent this process?
OK (laughs). You asked a question ... A lot of time I spend alone, especially when traveling or when I'm on the set. I live in hotels most of my life. I have nothing against masturbation, because I have many problems to solve in alone. You have to read a lot of school textbooks and so on (pause, laughs). That you ask me! So, when I'm alone, I masturbate a lot. I do not know why. Therefore, if it crushed stone on me for a long time, I would probably still masturbate.
