Keira Knightley: “Nobody has the right to judge Karenina”

At a press conference marking the release of the drama by Joe Wright "Anna Karenina", which was shot on the basis of the novel by Leo Tolstoy, Keira Knightley talked about working on a role.

"The first time I read the book when I was 19 years old. Actually, any actress would have said, “God, what an amazing character”. Once on the set of "Atonement" with Joe, we discussed the great female characters and talked about them. We have tried to list them, and Anna Karenina, of course, was among them. Joe has called me a couple of years ago, when I worked on a "Dangerous Method," and asked, "Anna Karenina?" and I said, “Yeah". He said that he will make a movie, if only Tom Stoppard will adapt the novel. 2 months later, Joe called me back and said that Tom is already working on the script. But the script, as such, was not. When we discussed the first version of it, it represented the usual story. It turned into a stylized theatrical performance just 10 weeks before the start of filming. Joe invited me to his office and said: "So, so. We will be filming in the theater. "If I did not know Joe well and worked with him before, his words brought me in horror. But I agreed to work with him on "Karenina," because I knew that he makes his projects interesting and original."

- Did you add anything to the image of Karenina from yourself, something that was not there in the book?

"No. I mean, in the book contains a lot of information that can be interpreted in different ways. Tolstoy wrote it on behalf of Karenina, the third-person judging and discussing her behavior. And, based on these discussions and descriptions that can be understand that there is not one point of view. When I read the novel in 19 years, I clearly remember that Karenina is innocent. I do not remember that condemned her for something. When I read the book before filming began at the age of 26, I suddenly felt the difference. I realized that Karenina is much darker. Playing Karenina, I tried to think about what function she performed in the book, and, on this basis, which function should be in the film. I'm sure that this moral ambiguity of my character, for me, as an actress, was an interesting aspect. "

- Do you have something in common with Anna Karenina and what sets you apart?

"I think she's a terrible character, and it is scary because we tried her, and feel, and throwing stones at her, and then asked: "And am I better than her?" And each answer is "No".
Nobody has the right to judge her, but we tried, and it's scary. Before us is a woman who was married at 18. Now she is 28. She has never experienced an orgasm. She's never been in love. Course, surprised herself the first time she feels the urge. Suddenly she feels all the charm of a romantic relationship, and she believes her love. Exclusive love. She does not see that there are many different forms of love, and that the "honeymoon" eventually reborn into something else, and that is its tragedy. When the period of "honeymoon" gradually begins to run out, she thinks that love disappears. She does not realize what is happening. I think that's understandable. We all know what a romantic relationship is, and we also know that they - just a small part of these relations. And it is absolutely clear that at some point in any of us can confuse love with true love. So the question I would say this: I both like and not like Anna Karenina".

- There are many novel by Leo Tolstoy. Which ones did you see? Maybe you took something from them?

"I decided not to watch any of the existing films. Being a teenager I saw the screen version with Greta Garbo and film in 2001, were shown on the BBC with a gorgeous English actress Helen McCrory. This was a long time ago, and I do not remember details."

- Did you like to work with Joe? Are not you afraid of things that he makes you to do?

"Yes, a little. He is obsessed with what he is doing. At 24 hours, seven days a week. He makes you think you're doing the most important thing in the world. Actually, it is not. But work with someone who demands from you 150%, and total immersion in the role - catching piece!”

- Was there anything that you like to put on and wear?
