Investors are gradually beginning to raise questions about the need to release movies in 3D. Charges of "Pirates of the Caribbean 4" were regarded as low, but now bad launch of "Kung Fu Panda 2" once again confirmed the trend: audiences are less willing to pay per view movie in glasses.

Animated film from DreamWorks, which cost about $ 150 million, went to American screens last week. Given the prolonged weekends (from the Americans was Memorial Day), the second "Panda" has collected about 53.5 million dollars. At the same time, the comedy "Hangover II", despite the rating R (children under 17 years are permitted only when accompanied by adult), as well as the lack of 3D, earned 117.5 million dollars, twice as much.

Viewers do not want to pay extra money for inconvenient eyeglasses and dull image, analysts say. Now, writes of Deadline, reacted to the collections of films and on Wall Street. Shares of the company RealD, which designs fashionable technology, yesterday, fell by 12%. In total, over the past two weeks, the drop was 23%.

Charges of "Panda 2" is not long in coming and promotions DreamWorks Animation, all their cartoons graduating in 3D. Compared with last year they fell by 20%. Charges of screenings of sequel "Kung Fu Panda" in 3D accounted for 45% of the total fees the film in the States. For comparison: last year's "Shrek Forever" in 3D brought to cinemas 60% of the total fees for the weekend. In this case, it is worth considering that the number of rooms are adapted to show the volume of films, was for 343 less.

One of the biggest critics of the format of Wall Street, a company spokesman BTIG Richard Greenfield recommends getting rid of shares of DreamWorks Animation, as the "movie studios didn’t meet expectations."

The cost of watching a movie in 3D for the American family of three is around $45, which can be added to the cost of popcorn, drinks and pay for parking. Taken together, easily translates into $100.

Over the past few weeks, the public television not only lived with upfronts, so some interesting news still slipped. So, we have tried to put the pieces together.

Chris Columbus on television. CBS acquired a channel to its ranks of legendary director (Home Alone 1-2, Harry Potter 1-2). The agreement is intended to develop three new projects for a canal across the CBS TV Studios and 1492 Pictures. It is planned that at least one of them will reach the stage of the pilot, which will produce and shoot himself Columbus.

SyFy developing a spin-off of Warehouse 13. The main hero of the new project will become a character Jamie Murray, who played in the second season of the famous writer HG Wells' science fiction, which is on the show was a woman. Development is still in its very early stages, but the idea is to put Wells in Entourage 1890. Despite attempts to Warehouse 12 to get her, she remains a free agent, which uses her knowledge of modern science to reveal the murder and other mysteries. The third season of original series starts in July 11.
Comedy Central renewed the series Workaholics. Comedy has received an order for a second season, which will be of 10 episodes. Novelty was right after South Park, thanks to which ranked first in timeslot among young men, especially in age from 18 to 24.

A & E ordered miniseries Coma. Producing four-part project will be engaged by Ridley Scott and Tony Scott. Medical thriller tells about a doctor who discovers that his hospital is something bad - a few seemingly healthy patients after the most common procedures are in a coma. The script written by John J. McLaughlin (Black Swan). The premiere is scheduled for May next year.

David Fyuri joined the Fringe. A former executive producer of Lost next season will serve as a writer and consulting producer. Fyuri also worked on Buffy & Angel, and produced the pilot of Terra Nova, and then abandoned the project

Governator came to the end. In light of recent events in the life of Arnold Schwarzenegger (recognition of infidelity, divorce with his wife, born out of wedlock children), producers of animated series about a former governor-superhero reported that production of the project is stopped. Interestingly, in a synopsis of cartoon appear such phrases as "Leads a double life is an exemplary family man and a fighter against crime."

One gets the impression that the star of "Hurt Locker" is gradually implementing a plan to capture Hollywood. Jeremy Renner starred in the franchise "Mission: Impossible", will be the heir to Jason Bourne, has gotten the role of Hawkeye in "Avengers" and now formed his own production company. The first project of Renner will be a biopic about Steve McQueen, the actor who played himself.

A company called The Combine has already attracted producer of crime drama "We Own the Night" James Gray. The film will shoot Marshall Terrill ("Portrait of an American Rebel" and "The Life and Legend of the symbol of Hollywood").

In his directorial debut will be Czech director Ivan Zacharias.

After roles in such films as "The Hurt Locker" and "The Town" Jeremy Renner has become one of the busiest actors in Hollywood. Now he is in Berlin, where he acted in the translation of stories by "Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters", in the near future will voice a role in "Ice Age 4", should begin shooting in Tony Gilroy "The Bourne Legacy" and in February 2012 may be on the court of thriller "The Fall of virtue." And this does not include the role in "The Avengers".

In 2009, the rights to the book of Terrill "Portrait of an American Rebel" have gotten producers Michael and Christine Peters. Terrill book focuses on how McQueen loves motorcycles and racing cars, and his addiction to drugs.

At the same time, former press agent Steve McQueen and producer David Foster bought the film rights to the memoirs of the first wife of actor Neal Adams. It planned to focus on the romantic line in the life of Hollywood legend.

When Jeremy Renner will play Steve McQueen, it is not clear. But the actor will soon be a frequent guest on the big screen.

Big fight for rent: American cinemas vs. studios

Starting today American box office begins new life. The company DirecTV, which provides services such as Video on demand (VOD), presents for subscribers of its HD-Channel Home Premiere a comedy, "Just go with it" which came out in the rental only at the beginning of February.

Cost of viewing $29.99, far more than the usual film, commissioned by VOD. The problem is that the theater owners saw a potential threat to innovation DirecTV. It is not the first time the studio encroaches on charges of cinemas. Memorable story of "Alice in Wonderland," which was released on DVD much earlier period.

Now, Sony, Warner Bros., Universal and Fox cut a window on 60 days between the start of release and show of a movie on VOD. Majors believe that most of their films make money in a period of four to five weeks from start rolling.

Cinemas believe that reducing the window to 60 days - just the tip of the iceberg, and the studios really want to shorten this period. The owners asked a logical question: why did the person pay $ 30 to watch a movie that is already in couple of months will be available on a conventional VOD and DVD. Studio, in turn, argues that there is nothing wrong a premium service designed for those who already do not go to cinemas. Also, the studios need to find a replacement to gradually die DVD standard. Among other things, majors believe that theater owners are harmful to rental, inflating ticket prices.

In America, DirecTV has 6 million subscribers. Those who have the ability to watch movies in high quality, can buy the show of a new film in two weeks and watch it for 48 hours, after which it will be unavailable. After Sony's turn comes Warner and Fox - they will give their new film "Hall Pass" and "Cedar Rapids". In two weeks later, Universal will give DirecTV "The Adjustment Bureau".

What would happen if the movie, posted on DirecTV, is still going to theaters? Owners can easily remove it from rolling. Although after 60 days of charges most of the paintings can hardly be called successful comedies, "Just go with it" still been showing in 326 movie theaters. To collect 270,000 dollars, which brought the movie over the last weekend at cinemas, DirecTV needs to get it booked for 9,003 people. How much income will get the studio DirecTV, has not been announced, but, for example, Disney has remained not happy with the testing service, conducted in January this year in Portugal with the cartoon "Tangled". The film was sold for 24,99€ only after six weeks after the movie premieres, but it has been booked by less than 1000 people.

At the beginning, DirecTV intended to enter the market with fanfare on April 14, but after the March on the show in Las Vegas, the company announced the launch of the service and theater owners became very angry. Studios are in a difficult situation. Moreover, filmmakers James Cameron and Todd Phillips took the side of cinema that did not help the positive perception of the service. As a result, the studio decided not to announce a new service of the channel Home Premiere earlier weeks before its launch.

Will this project be successful it is too early to tell. Studios are experimenting with pricing and time windows. "Hollywood Reporter" writes that Paramount studio worried about piracy. Copies of the films, shot with VOD, get into the Internet long before the release of the movie on DVD, and with the advent of high-quality content in a couple of months after the start of rental, pirates can even get better sources.

Voicing cowboy Woody and astronaut Buzz in franchise "Toy Story", Tom Hanks and Tim Allen for the first time will appear together on screen. Studio Disney recruited a duet for a family picture of Jungle Cruise, which will be based on an amusement park "Magic Kingdom".

Talking about the production of another film based on the attraction of the Disneyland resumed after November last year. Then the project was attributed to Jon Favreau and the painting itself was presented as an answer of Disney studio to Fox and it’s "Night at the Museum."

Now the name of the director of "Iron Man" is no longer associated with the Jungle Cruise, but the studio has hired a screenwriter. Roger Schulman has long been under the supervision of "Disney" and will write a story about resurgent attractions. In the filmography of writer are such sequels as "Bambi 2", "Mulan 2" and "The Jungle Book 2", as well as the first "Shrek."

Disney for a few years is trying to run the project on the film adaptation of the Magic Kingdom, but only got hold of the duo Hanks-Allen studio really move forward to implement the project.

This year Tom Hanks will appear in a comedy "Larry Crown", where he is also a director. Tim Allen in a recent has a bad luck to hits: his "Six Wives of Henry Lefay" came out in many countries at once on home video, but the last time he appeared on the big screen in the comedy "Wild Hogs" four years ago.

Gore Verbinski interview

Gore Verbinski is famous in directing films of various genres, but at this time he has directed his first feature-length animated western "Rango", continuing collaboration with Johnny Depp, which has voiced the main character - a chameleon Rango. Here is an interview with the director.

- One gets the impression that your film was conceived not as a children's cartoon. Did you thing from the very beginning that the main character will be a lizard?
I was planning to shoot the children's cartoon and now I pleased to see, that children and their parents enjoy it in cinemas around the world. Children are constantly overlooked, and yet they always catch the essence. So I do not know the answer to your question.

- On the premiere the whole hall was packed with children, but it seemed that adults were laughing the loudest.
Probably. I do not think that working on the film, you can deliberately choose a future audience for which you shoot it. We must shoot for ourselves and hope that others will enjoy it too.

- Most people from the "Rango" team have worked with you on "Pirates", including your permanent editor Craig Wood. Before them has been set a goal – to shoot an animated film, but for many of them it is a new task.
I think if those people with whom you work, are very talented, you can get from them even more if you weed them out of their usual environment. We have a team of associates, and we together wake up at 3 am in a cold sweat with the thought of how can we realize our plans. And this thought brings us together and makes us stronger. We really wanted to invent a new chip in the field of animation. Too many people create wonderful cartoons, we just did not want to repeat their path, and therefore decided not to refer to the "Rango" as to the cartoon. We’ve imagined that we work with ordinary actors, I have a camera on my shoulder, and I shoot the lizard growth of 5 feet, which speaks with a turtle.

- So summarizing, you were shooting in order to get a live sound track, and did motion capture, is not it?
Yes, but the sound - a very important detail. We filmed with multiple cameras and use this stuff from time to time, for example, told the animators: "Look what Johnny does with his face here and here." There were very useful moments, but basically, we got the pleasure of the work that is considered normal traditional animation, rather than motion capture.

- Your idea worked because, watching "Rango", you forget that this is a cartoon about talking animals.
Thank you. We tried to create characters with character, such as rabbit Dock - city tippler; all the characters are designed in the best traditions of the genre.

- You signed a contract to shoot the film "Lone Ranger" with Depp in the title role, despite the fact that you both had just finished work on westerns. Do you plan to shoot anything else in between these two movies?
Yes, I would like. We're still working on the script for "Ranger" and tried to stick to the schedule. I spent three and a half years staring at a computer monitor, and now I dream to be on that side of it and shoot something, such as "Synoptic".

Favorite Depp hero

Cartoon of Gore Verbinski "Rango" has demonstrated the best start in 2011, earning the first weekend in North American box office $ 38 million. This is almost three times less than that demonstrated exactly a year ago, another project with Johnny Depp - "Alice in Wonderland."

In general, the beginning of March box-office Hollywood movies at home dropped by nearly 30 percent compared with last year.

However, management doesn’t saw causes for concern, since on the front is very rich potential blockbuster summer season, which can correct the situation with the box office.

In spite of his great hero Rengo, Johnny Depp favorite is a superhero Prince Namor, also known under the name of the Submariner. About this the actor said in an interview with LA Times. "At one time I was a full-fledged fan of the comics. I liked Sgt Rock. But most of all I loved Submariner. This is a multifaceted character, and I really liked that it took place under water" - confessed Depp.

He also added that he had little interest in major U.S. superhero Superman, but for some time keen on Spider-Man. Recall that the Submariner was created by Bill Everett in 1939. Prince Namor was the son of the Princess of Atlantis and the simple seaman. Submariner differed cantankerous nature, and not once set foot in a fight with other heroes.

Rumors about the film adaptation of comic book about Submarinere apply in Hollywood long ago. In 2006, even it was announced that director of the film was Jonathan Mostow. But the project has been never realized.

USA premieres

In the American box office the main portion of attention went to large-scale animation project "Rango" with Johnny Depp from the creator of "Pirates of the Caribbean" Gore Verbinski and Philip K. Dick movie "The adjustment bureau". In the author's pocket were two Asian sensational tapes: South Korean thriller "I saw the devil" ("Akmareul boatda") and Thai drama "Loong Boonmee raleuk chat", which has taken the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

"The adjustment bureau"
Young and cocky Congressman David Norris (Matt Damon) running for the Senate and is a potential winner. But lost the election because of his youthful missteps, he goes into the men's dressing room to rehearse speech before an audience. There's a man meets a dancer Eliza (Emily Blunt).
Between them runs a spark clash with a kiss, and inspired Norris says the best speech of his career, once again captured the lost sympathy of the electorate. Subsequently, randomly confronted with Eliza on the bus, he understands that completely in love with a girl.

But on his path stands staff mysterious Adjustment Bureau, the politician said that the meeting with a dancer was to be held only once, and if he will continue to further relations with the girl, the organization insists on a more serious measures, up to full reset the memory of the hero.

"Rango"
Domestic Chameleon (voice and facial expressions of Johnny Depp) gets into Nevada desert, where he accidentally impersonating himself as heroic cowboy named Rango - threatens of the entire neighborhood.

Originally director Gore Verbinski had planned to make "Rango" a low-budget outlet following a large scale "Pirates of the Caribbean". As a result, the project became a heavyweight, whose cost slightly less than the same "Pirates." As the latest and most popular creation of director, "Rango" is based on proven genre scheme. If the saga of Jack Sparrow has been made in the key of the old-fashioned sea films (a la pirate stories with Errol Flynn), the cartoon is an ironic family western, built with the help of canonical moves and typecasting of the famous cowboy stories.

During the creation of animated pictures Verbinski tried to make the minor characters no less characteristic than the central one, inspired by an episode of "Wild bunch" by Sam Peckinpah, when the hero Strother Martin pulls off the boots from a dead man.

Critics have accepted the film with the great interest, calling it a superb and witty spectacle for all ages.

Brought American audiences three fairly big premieres of the weekend, the President Day was able to formally terminate the prolonged 14 weeks downturn in the American Cinemas, but this result was made possible only by what has happened over the last year of the calendar shift. Compared with similar holiday weekend a year ago, total revenue decreased by 28%, and the result of the winner came out the worst this weekend for the past six years. Jointly three newcomers have earned only 67.2 million dollars, whereas a year ago, also three new releases, led by the Valentine's Day have earned more than twice as large an amount of 137.4 million dollars.

In a highly competitive when once housed five films with a relatively short interval from each other, celebrating the victory somewhat surprising thriller "Unknown" with Liam Neeson in the starring role.
The success of the 30 millionth project was crucial to surviving tough times Dark Castle Studio famous producer Joel Silver.

On the second line-up to the big weekend rose a former third week ago perky cartoon. Animation film "Gnomeo and Juliet" led film distribution chart on Sunday and completely dominated on Monday, collecting 19.2 million dollars in the fall of 24,5% over the three days and 25.4 million dollars for four. Until the final victory of the sum of four days of garden and house gnomes did not have some 38 thousand dollars. It was the smallest gap between the first two places in the Cinemas of the weekend 7-9 August 2000.

Regarded as a relatively clear favorite fiction thriller by Dee Jay Caruso "I Am Number Four" made considerably weaker than expectations, calling into question the apparent plans for a huge film studio for a new popular franchise. Made on 60-million budget for the costs of solid advertising campaign filming eponymous bestseller collected only 19.4 million dollars in 3154 theaters for a three-day weekend and 22.8 million in four days. Before the premiere almost all forecasts fees higher then 30-million mark.
"I am number four" was the first release of DreamWorks through a brand owned by Disney Touchstone Pictures. Providing for distribution of 30 films the studio five-year deal was struck in February 2009.

A romantic comedy with Adam Sandler "Just Go with It" has lost 39% of its revenue debut, collecting 18.5 million dollars for three days and 21.6 million for four.
