Hawk Koch interview
The new president of the American Academy Hawk Koch answered questions of resource THR.
Here are some excerpts from the interview.
- What are you going to do first of all?
First of all it is necessary to determine the producer and host of the ceremony of "Oscar". The second point - to make sure that we will earn $ 100 million in October for the museum, which will allow us to continue to fill up its collection. Our third task - to make sure that everyone in America and around the world know Academy in the educational sphere, and that makes for the preservation of film. I mean not just physical safety film or digital media, but also the protection of art of cinema itself. I want to continue to promote to the masses the idea that the Academy is inspiration for the next generation of filmmakers. And the Academy - is not only "Oscar." The year has 364 days, during which time we do a lot for our community and the world at large. I want to be sure that everyone knows about it.
- Has Tom Chirac, former president, already started looking for a producer for the ceremony of "Oscar"? Did he discuss it with you?
I became the President just few months ago. As an official, I know that the negotiations were conducted. I hope the decision will be taken soon. We are thinking about this and the answer will be forthcoming.
- Whatever you personally, would like to see the ceremony of the "Oscar"?
I'd like to see the ceremony was longer (laughs). Seriously, I think, "Oscar" will become something more than just a TV show. It will be digital. I hope that as this year, viewers will watch "Oscar" and use the service Oscars.org. I am eager to do one thing: the position of "It's great to be nominated". I want all of the nominees is closer to the awards ceremony had the opportunity to express their feelings, friends, fans, saying, for example:" You know, what? Great to be nominated. If I win, it will be awesome, and if not, listen, I had a great time. And I felt love and gratitude for the work you did.
- The next award ceremony of the American Academy is declared on February 24. But some members of the Academy believe that it should be carried out before, probably in January. In your opinion, "Oscar" should be moved to January?
I do not think we will move "Oscar" for January. I think our board members believe that we are Super Bowl. I applaud all the other shows, they are great, but we -"Oscar" and "Oscar"- Vince Lombardi Trophy.
- Under existing rules, in the category "Best Film" may be presented from 5 to 10 pictures. Would you like to make it a rule preserved or it may change to the next "Oscar"?
No, it will remain unchanged. It works well, and I think will continue to work well. We are confident that, if there are 6 or 7 or 8 films worthy of a nomination, then so be. You can not filter out movies just because that we can choose only five.
- Media obsessed with "Oscar". How Academy is going to promote its other activities?
I think the electronic media play an important role in this. There are people who do not want to be George Clooney and Chris Nolan. They want to be filmmakers, or artists, animators, sound engineers. I want to be sure that they know that The Academy is engaged in these things.
- Since you are a member of the board for 8 years, the president can be elected for one term only. You feel the pressure due to the fact that at your disposal there is only a year?
You know, I recently visited Academy and on so many committees and meetings that convinced that he was ready to get started. So I just need to start doing it. Film, about which I dreamed all my life, received the "green light". What do you want to do if you're a producer? Move! That's what I'm going to do.
Movie about Alf
The sharp-tongued stranger, a big fan of cats (if they are properly prepared, of course) Alf moves from the series 80 in a feature film. This time, it will carry more than 90: the right to film version was purchased by Sony Pictures Animation.
Sitcom "Alf" went on U.S. television from 1986 to 1990. In the story of an alien Shamuey Gordon catches amateur radio signal and turns on the earth, having suffered a collapse in the garage of the family of Tanner. Willie and his wife Kate bring up two children - daughter Lynn and son Bryan - and least of all expect that their house will have a new tenant.
ALF (short for Alien Life Form) can not return to his home planet Melmak because he fell victim to nuclear explosions. Living with Tanner is fun spectacle for the viewer, and a headache for the family, forced to hide Alf from prying neighbors and the government.
Alf was born in October 28, 1756, 122 years he has been studied in high school, where he was team captain for buyabaysball. Eight stomachs of Alf constantly require filling, so the hero loved to eat, with a special passion fed to cats. However, the miracle cat Lucky survives near the voracious neighbor.
On the set of the show has dominated the tense atmosphere, associated with hostility of actors to each other and to the puppet Alf. Shooting of the half-hour episode took 20-25 hours. The construction site was special to puppeteers have their place. Series creator and the voice of Alf has been director Paul Fusco personally.
The success of the "Alf" attempted to replicate in the animated series, which went from 1987 to 1988, the same publisher has launched a series of Marvel comic shaggy alien, published four years.
In 1996 came the full-length TV movie "Project: ALF" has not received and the proportion of the popularity of the original series.
May 21, 2012 Paul Fusco said that offers a feature film to the studio. Agreement on the film version was recently signed with the company Sony Pictures Animation. Cine "Alf" will be a feature film.
To date, the project was not attributed to any one director. To produce a picture will Jordan Kerner, who worked on "George of the Jungle," "Inspector Gadget", "Charlotte's Web" and the recent "Smurfiks."
Interview with Ole Bornedal
Director of horror film "The Possession" Ole Bornedal in an interview resource ShockTillYouDrop spoke about his project.
- Please tell us in a few words about the story, "The possession".
This is a story about divorced couple, the parents are Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick. Over a broken family is always hovers the spirit of sadness. They have two daughters - Natasha Calis and Madison Davenport - who, as all children, feel the blame for the divorce of their parents. One of them buys box on the local market and it turns out that this is - box Dibbuk. According to Jewish tradition, the box is imprisoned exiled evil demon or spirit. Part of the film is based on real events: in 2002 one of these boxes was sold on eBay and virtually destroyed the family. So, in the hands of a little girl enters a dangerous thing, from which it is necessary to stay away, and the child becomes possessed by a demon.
- Usually you shoot movies, which you write the script. "The Possession" scenario has already been written. What's in someone else's script made you to make a movie?
Humanist story and the character of the story resonated in my soul. I needed to bring to the studio and producers, that the main focus of "Possession” is based on the relationship between a divorced couple and children affected by parental break. I saw the story more as an allegory, the symbol of divorce, rather than as a typical horror film. I wanted to tell the true story of a mentally sadness, sadness that the family was going through, but on the background of all this starting to happen, crazy things. So I bribed the script very beautiful and sad story of the family.
- Have you made any changes to the script?
No, but we made many modifications. I think we paid more attention to the relationship between parents and the psychology of the characters. I do not like horror movies as a genre, not very much. I find many of them ugly or too gory or tasteless, or deprived of real heroes. For me, regardless of genre, the main hero is on the first place. If you can not give this film the characters, the film does not succeed. I was very lucky to work with such wonderful actors who were engaged in our project. They managed to catch and convey the feelings and emotions of their characters.
- Is there a lot of violence in the film?
I do not think that the film is so full of violence and horror. That's what I'm trying to work, more concerned silence and noise. Silly old-fashioned cliché to assume that sounds are terrible. In fact, the opposite is true. I think that silence is terrible. If you're sitting in a big dark house, you're not afraid of the noise. You scared the absence of noise. More viewers will be forced to reflect on the lack of sound, the better. Then I start to cry to their fantasies, inner demons, and neurotic disorders. In my opinion, this is the psychology of a true horror movie.
- What should expect horror fans from your film?
I think they will have a chance to experience a deeper horror, because some aspects are beyond the movie special effects or crazy, bleeding, maniac. You will see the real people who are hurting something invisible, something shocking, what makes an innocent little girl into a monster. Fans of the genre can look forward to new, more profound experience.
- Had you made some sacrifices to keep the rating PG-13?
Yes, there were several casualties. As a director, you do not want to humiliate yourself by cutting scenes that you think is extremely good. I do not understand the American Motion Picture Association, and who knows? On the other hand, watching a movie, I knew its secret. I know served as some of the scenes.
- Perhaps we will see the director's or any additional material later on?
I do not know. Maybe.
“Emmy” nominations: impressions
I must say that this post in any case does not pretend to be objective, therefore, express your opinions and dissent in comments.
- This year was even more clearly visible marasmus of nominations for the miniseries and TV series. Of the six nominees for the Grand Prize three are actually for many serials (Luther, Sherlock and the American Horror Story). American Horror Story became a mini-soap, as the series is an anthology in which each season will tell a single complete story. Therefore, AHS will nominated as a miniseries in the next year, even if it is extended to the third, fourth and so on seasons. From Downton Abbey in this and last year there was a different story. Last year, Downton Abbey went on U.S. television with double episodes, so did not get the required number of episodes - at least six - to go by the rules in the category of "drama". Producers had to file it as miniseries. This year the situation has changed, and Downton Abbey has become a drama that does not negatively affect the number of nominations compared to last year (the number of nominations has increased from 11 to 16), but is likely greatly reduce the number of received statuettes. Sherlock is forced to file a separate series as minifilm because the Academy did not recognize its mini-soap and to drama series Sherlock is not enough. At the same time the Academy recognized the mini-soap for some reason Luther, who successfully nominated in this category for the third consecutive year. It remains unclear why, for example, in categories such as directing and script, which even for the full series will still be accepted for consideration, miniseries and TV movies are a separate nomination.
- Downton Abbey made a serious bid to win among the dramas with 16 nominations. From this chance of Homeland to get award for best drama is sharply decreased. Now, Mad Men will compete with Downton Abbey. In favor of Mad Men talk as much as three nominations in the category "Best Script" against one in Downton Abbey and Homeland. If Mad Men gets fifth consecutive statuette for "Best drama" episode beat the record for most wins in this category. Now the record is shared by Hill Street Blues, LA Law, The West Wing itself Mad Men, series, each with 4 wins. However, neither of which certainty can not speak, but academics are always full of surprises.
- A vivid example of what a few nominations for best script does not guarantee anything - Parks and Recreation. In this series as much as two nominations for the script, but nevertheless it was nominated for "best comedy". Moreover, the six nominees for best comedy nomination for the screenplay is only at Girls. An absurd situation for television, in which the script is considered an important creative component.
- Glee almost completely disappeared from the radars of Emmy - only 3 nominations (and all non-main) to 12 nominations a year ago and 19 two years ago.
- Ratings, apparently, are still important for academics. Of course, they do not guarantee the nomination, but academics, at least pay attention to the ratings on the series, even live TV, not only on the cycle of premium cable. Significantly in the rankings who has passed The Good Wife took off from a nomination for best drama. Instead, popular with viewers essential comedy has not gone unnoticed.
- Of course, the fact that academics has finally noticed the Community, should rejoice. But some of the series seems to go unnoticed. Sons of Anarchy and the Fringe, for example, (the list is not exhaustive) simply do not exist for the TV Academy. But things are changing, as we have seen in Friday Night Lights. It is a pity that the Community may be too late.
- The most unexpected sorrows were the lack of nominations for The Good Wife, for KELSY Grammer (especially given its Emmy-story), for John Slattery (who was still beautiful in Mad Men), Nick Offerman and of course, for leaving the TV House MD with Hugh Laurie.
Shia LaBeouf wants to work with Lars von Trier
Rejecting the further shootings in films like "Transformers," Shia LaBeouf continues to prove that he was a serious actor. Recently, LaBeouf began talks with Lars von Trier about participation in the project of maestro "Nymphomaniac."
Shooting of "Nymphomaniac" begins in September, so in recent years are reinforced talks about the casting. Nicole Kidman said that will play a small role of von Trier, but official confirmation of this has not happened. Work on the painting will take place in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the director was filming "Antichrist."
LaBeouf has become a frequent visitor to the European film festivals. He came to Cannes with a film of Oliver Stone's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" is represented in Cannes “Lawless”, and in September of this year will be in Venice with the movie "Dirty Game", which is shown out of competition.
"Nymphomaniac" will be released in two parts and two versions - a soft, rolled to a relatively wide audience and the other - is a hardcore, pornographic. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays a woman for the erotic of formation of which would see the picture.
Who can play Shia LaBeouf, has not been announced. "Nymphomaniac" will be the fourth independent movie after western actor John Hillcoat "Lawless" Robert Redford's drama "Dirty Game" and the thriller "The inevitable death of Charlie Countryman," whose capture ended recently.
By the way, the sex scenes should not be confused LaBeouf after the shooting of the clip Sigur Ros.
Producer of "Nymphomaniac" Peter Olbek Jensen believes that Lars will have time to finish the film in time for the 66th Cannes Film Festival, which will be held from 15 to 26 May 2013. But mindful of the incident, after which von Trier was named persona non grata of the festival, his participation in the famous European film festival is open to question.
Ben Affleck may shoot “Justice League”
Attempts of Warner bosses to find the director who will bring to the big screen superhero team in the "Justice League" worthy of respect for originality. The post was offered to Ben Affleck, who directed for the studio "The Town" and "Argo", and he managed to be a superhero himself.
When Christopher Nolan finally disown the universe of Batman, Warner managed to persuade the director to become the curator of "Man of Steel." But Nolan's work on this in the camp of comics will be completed. It is clear the direction, in which is moving the logic of the studio bosses: it is necessary to find a young director, which removes a realistic movie, just such as "Gone Baby Gone" and “The Town”.
To date, Affleck is the only director who has received at the hands of the scenario "Justice League". It was written by Will Bill, who worked on the series "Castle," and the thriller "Hunters in the gangsters”. Bill was hired last summer, but his name surfaced in connection with the "League" this year alone.
"Justice League" is one of Hollywood's long-term projects. To shoot the picture with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Flash the studio was going for a long time. In 2007, the project just was not implemented by the director, "Mad Max" by George Miller. However, due to failure of the script and soon followed the writers' strike, "League" in 2008 kicked the bucket.
Now the project looks very like the answer to "Avengers." Part of the way it is, but the team of superheroes - a common thing for the comic book publishers, so the answer to "Avengers," "Justice League", in fact, is not.
Given that Affleck makes films in which he finds roles for himself, it will be interesting which of the superheroes he chooses for himself. Recall that in 2003 Ben starred in the role of Matt Murdock - blind lawyer who has received super powers - in the movie "Daredevil."
The publication Variety reported the news of the involvement of Ben Affleck for "Justice league", but a few hours later said the site Deadline, claiming that the representatives have denied any involvement of Affleck to the project. Who exactly will undertake the "Justice League", time will tell, which is running out: Warner wants to see the film on screens in the summer of 2015, as once a year, second release of "Avengers."
Biographic movie about Brazilian football star
Imagine Entertainment film company has planned biopic about one of the best football players in the world - Brazilian Pele. The script will write Zimbalist brothers, Jeff and Michael, who made a documentary film "The Two Escobars". They will share the project director's chair.
According to the bosses of Imagine, the film shows the formation of the future star of football and will trace the life history of Pele from his birth to obtain the title of best player of the World Cup in Sweden in 1970.
Pele, whose real name - Edson Arantes Nascimento, was born in October 23, 1940 in the town of Tres Korosoyns in the family of a former football player. His name was in honor of the American inventor Thomas Edison, but the parents at the last minute decided to delete "and" from "Edison". His father was the first teacher of the boy. At 7 years old Edson began performing in local children's team, which has a very entertaining and rewarding game in attack. One of the coaches of the team, the former Brazilian national team player Waldemar de Brito, organized Edson show at the club "Santos." By the way, the nickname Pele Edson was in school because the mangled name of his favorite goalkeeper Bile from the club “Vasco da Gama”.
On the football field in the "Santos" Pele was released 15-year-old teenager. During his first match he scored a goal right away. The young player made his debut in the national team at the World Championships in Sweden (1958). Pele was just 17 years old when he was recognized by the audience, as well as experts and rivals, becoming the youngest champion in the history of the world championships.
Pele is the best player of the twentieth century by FIFA and according to International Olympic Committee is the best sportsman of the twentieth century.
The film rights to the life history of a legendary football player owns a British businessman, the owner of the club New York Cosmos Paul Kemzli. He turned to Imagine a proposal to shoot a feature film.
Filming is scheduled for next year and will be held in Brazil. It is planning to release a picture before the next World Cup in football, which will be held in Brazil in 2014.
Jennifer Lawrence in the role of daughter-mistress
The project of brothers Weinstein studio “The Ends Of The Earth” has interested a star of “Hunger Games” Jennifer Lawrence. Drama, written by Chris Terry (“Argo”) will tell about the flirt of oil tycoon with a stepdaughter.
The film is based on real events. Lydia Miller Roberts, as a teenager, was in the foster home of her uncle, a businessman and oil tycoon Ernst Whitworth Merlend. Ernst and his wife Virginia were childless, but incredibly rich. In 1924 Virginia died and two years later Merlend annulled the status of Lydia as adopted daughter and married her.
In 1928, Ernst has lost much of his wealth, went to Washington with Lydia, and in 1932 ran for U.S. Congress. In 1934 he was elected governor of Oklahoma. Despite the difference in 26 years, Ernst and Lydia lived happily until his death in 1941.
Lydia cared about the welfare of workers, convinced her husband to raise salaries, but also introduce unprecedented at the time health care benefits. Over time, gained the nickname Prairie Princess. After her husband's death Lydia gradually moving away from the "Palace on the prairie," as they called the house of spouses in the small town of Ponca City, and in the early 1950s and disappeared completely from sight, having appeared only in 1975.
Costume dramas are nothing new for the filmography of Lawrence. Jennifer recently completed filming the drama by Suzanne Bier "Serena," where she played the wife of the owner of the timber empire. The action of "Serena" is developing in 1929.
Young actress last year became part of two major franchises. She plays a blue-skinned mutant Mystique in the film adaptation of comic book "X-Men: First Class" and Katniss Everdin of a trilogy of Suzanne Collins “Hunger Games”. By the way, for her role in the sequel to "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," Jennifer Lawrence will receive $ 10 million - the contract with the actress changed. For her work in the film of Gary Ross, she received only 500,000 dollars and bonuses from the rental. According to the original contract, Lawrence was removed in all the films on the books of Collins (and there will be four) for a modest fee, but due to the success of the first part, producers decided to change the terms of transaction.
In October, Jennifer can be seen in horror, "The house at the end of the street," and in November will be released drama "Silver linings playbook" with her participation.
“The Avengers” will be a TV series
Studio Disney has officially announced a deal with director Joss Weedon to stage the film "The Avengers 2," which he also wrote the script. Weedon also develop a series for the channel ABC, the action of which will evolve in the Universe of "Avengers."
The film, which brought together several superheroes of Marvel, released in April this year and has earned a worldwide box office of almost half a billion dollars, with interest having beaten the considerable budget (220 million).
Thus, the agreement with Weedon leaves the franchise in good hands. The creator of TV series "Buffy - the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly" was the key to success of "Avengers" and his involvement in the work on the sequel was only a matter of time.
Date of release of "Avengers 2" has not been announced, but, according to insiders, before 2015 the picture is not worth waiting: Marvel has released in theaters continuation of "Iron Man," "Thor," "First Avenger" and run the "Guardians of the Galaxy" and among other things, bring on the big screens of the new superhero - Ant-Man.
Details about the television "Avengers" are not informed yet. Earlier it was reported that Marvel wants to create a show that will be in spirit and mood of the film resemble Weedon, but it does not employ any full-length characters from the strip. However, the Marvel Universe allows us to introduce many new characters.
Joss Weedon will develop a series for the ABC studio and Marvel. On television, the director feels like a fish in water, so for this project, too, do not worry.
It is interesting, that the channel ABC is not abandoned plans for a series about the Hulk, which was attributed to Guillermo del Toro. In May, ABC Entertainment president insisted that the next season (i.e. 2013) TV series will be ready.
Fox and Marvel will change places?
October 10 this year, the Fox will expire at the right setting for the movie Daredevil, and the planned reboot and not budge. However, Fox may still remove the picture of the blind avenger. Studio is in talks with Marvel about the extension of the contract and sees Joe Carnahan as director of the tape. However, for Daredevil might have to give rights to some of the characters from the "Fantastic Four".
Fox is in talks with the director of "Team" A "," Joe Carnahan, who can take the place of the director of a new "Daredevil" instead of refused David Slade. Recall that the story of Matt Murdock, who was in the film played in 2003, Ben Affleck, will be reshot in the spirit of Frank Miller's comic book and make the picture a hardcore thriller in the spirit of the seventies. Carnahan has not yet received a formal proposal, but as say insiders, is only a matter of time.
Time in the studio is remained in short supply. If the shooting of the new "Daredevil" did not begin until October 10 of 2012, then Marvel will get back their right to a blind superhero. Given that the change of director the process of preparing for the film will go again (Carnahan will need a minimum of rework for a scenario), the deadline seems quite unrealistic. However, as they say all the same insiders, there is solution.
According to some sources close to the project, Marvel (and if not accurately, then Disney) is ready to prolong the stay of Daredevils in the studio Fox, if it, in return, will give the right to use a pair of characters from the universe of "Fantastic Four", namely the villain Galactus and the Silver Envoy Surfer. According to rumors, these characters play an important role in future projects of Marvel, so the studio is ready to sacrifice Daredevil.
Given that Fox is in the midst of launching a new version of the film "Fantastic Four", the rumors about replacing Daredevil with Surfer and Galactus are seem very strange. Fox has launched the "Four" with the director of "The Chronicles" led by Joshua Tranco. Giving such an important figure, now or later, will not be very reasonable.
What will be important for Fox - "Daredevil" or "Fantastic Four", we will know very soon.
